Amanda Seyfried, Rachel McAdams and Lizzy Caplan all had much stronger careers than Lohan following Mean Girls.

Well i would not say necessarily became the bigger star, but in Die Hard Alan Rickman stole the show even though i believe it was his first movie. Bruce Willis became a movie star with this, but he was already highly successful after Moonlighting, so it was just a continuation. The only people who knew of Rickman before this were theater darlings.

That's probably the best example of what the OP was intending to talk about, even more than Ghost World since ScarJo really did not really break out until Lost in Translation.

I've always wanted to see more of Lacey Chabert

I always felt bad for the guy who played Seymour here.

Got beat by a 5-minute cameo.

The other Julia Roberts movie that comes to mind is Satisfaction, which was definitely an attempt to market Justine Bateman. I just don't think Julia Roberts "stole the show" in those movies. Those were just movies she acted in, where the first billed actress fizzled.

The other one that comes to mind is Sandra Bullock in Speed. She definitely broke out after that film, and I don't think she was intended to be anything more than the love interest for Keanu.

She was third billed above the title.

She wasn't a star yet but it was not a throw away role, and it is not like Keanu disappeared.

Keanu is certainly still around, but I don't think he's as big a star as Sandra Bullock is, and I also don't think the level of her stardom was expected. So I'd say it definitely qualifies.

I was just taking issue with the idea that she was a nobody just playing the ultimately superfluous girlfriend

A decade later, she has the same problem.

Michelle Johnson had lines in that movie? I swear I don't remember...

It was an ensemble film and I don't remember who got top billing, but Kevin Spacey stole the show in The Usual Suspects and I think that was before Se7en.

I can't lock it down to a single movie but I feel like Humphrey Bogart did this countless times before he finally brokeout with High Sierra and Maltese Falcon.

The Petrified Forest
Bullets or Ballots
The Roaring Twenties
Angels With Dirty Faces
Kid Galahad
They Drive By Night

I was watching the US Shameless series last night and thinking that William H Macy was sold as the star, but the entire cast may be out shining him.

I don't believe breakout film is a requirement of the OP. Just that the unexpected actor eventually eclipsed the expected actor.

So the unknown actress who was engaged to Emilio Estevez and also couldn't act her way out of a paper bag got famous.

As someone else said, can't you just take any star's initial, random roles and extrapolate?

Eventually makes the exercise pointless.

Jason London was the star of Dazed and Confused. Ben Affleck had a small part in the film.

Jeremy London was the star of Mallrats. Ben Affleck had a supporting role.

Years after both of those movies came out, Affleck had an Oscar and was a big movie star.

So what?

Liv Tyler was the female lead of Empire Records. Renee Zellweger had a smaller role as her friend.

EVENTUALLY, Renee became a big movie star.

So what?

No. The role had to be in a movie in which someone else was expected to break out but didn't.

Zoe Saldana over Sam Worthington in Avatar.

I can't figure out what happened to her. Everyone in that movie went on to bigger things, even Lindsay for a while, but she vanished. I can only conclude she wasn't interested in stardom.

How about Samuel L Jackson in Pulp Fiction. Sure, it revitalized Travolta's career, but I'd argue Jackson ended up being the more memorable part.

Speaking of, it always kills me when I watch Jurassic Park and B.D. Wong gets higher billing than Jackson.

"Night Shift" was supposed to be a star vehicle for Henry Winkler (Ayyyyyyy), but his two relatively unknown co-stars, Michael Keaton and Shelly Long both went on to have much bigger movie careers.
