Movies that became cultural phenomena?

You know the ones that other movies are judged by. The templates for what's to come. The ones that transcend decades and become part of our cultural lexicon...

Star Wars
Jaws
The Matrix
Raiders of the Lost Ark

Re: Movies that became cultural phenomenas?

This is a list that could go on and on.

In the last twenty years or so it was probably Reservoir Dogs/Pulp Fiction for the whole idea of sprinkling knowing/ironic pop culture references throughout a film.

These two films also helped change the way in which music was used in movies.

Re: Movies that became cultural phenomenas?

Dracula (1931)
Gojira (1954)
Iron Man (2008)
Drunken Master (1978)

-----------

Now.... IM in of itself didn't impact the industry as much as that it was the spark of it that led studios to try to whip out their dicks in trying to form even bigger franchises from it. And this stupid want for a property universe. So far.... Marvel is the only one to really succeed where it counts. WB has it going as one that we fell into... it is chugging along... so they've that too.

Re: Movies that became cultural phenomenas?

E.T. for one Generation, but this Generation does not like the movie.

E.T. Phone Home...that 4 or 5 not alien key, Williams scores are always brilliant.

Musicals in their day:
Sound of Music
Mary Poppins

Old Classics:
Gone with the Wind (at one time it was the most quoted movie)

Slasher Movies:
Halloween (This is the one that started it all)

CASABLANCA (1943) - probably has more quotes in common use than any other film, well, maybe tied with GONE WITH THE WIND.

The Leone westerns and James Bond films in the 1960s.

Just to clarify for Oldboy: phenomena is already the plural of phenomenon, so there's no need for an S at the end.

This is absolutely correct and I changed the thread title accordingly.

Phaenomenon is a Latin second declension neuter noun, for those keeping score at home.

I would partially challenge this ... In modern time, Casablanca is probably the most misquoted films of all time. Most people quoting it today have not seen it and are quoting another reference that quoted it. It's one of those references that people know, but most people don't know why (e.g., "Oh, now I get that joke on Family Guy!").

That said, it may have been a phenomenon in its day. So is the OP's question about zeitgeist films (influence on the contemporary culture) or films that laid the blueprints for the films that came afterwards?

Deep Throat. It brought porn into the mainstream, actor Harry Reems successfully defended himself against obscenity charges brought by the federal government in a conservative jurisdiction, and it made so much money that non-criminal companies got interested in adult entertainment.

Re: Movies that became cultural phenomena?

You know, no one mentioned it, but

Ghostbusters (1984)

was a huge phenomenon. It was a lot of fun to see references to Ghostbusters everywhere you went. People were quoting the movie, merchandise was everywhere - it was a fun experience that people were sharing.
