Star Trek 4 (?) -- news, rumors, etc.
Paramount Pictures, Skydance and Bad Robot have made it official that the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise will return to the big screen for another outing. In the next installment of Star Trek, Chris Pine’s Captain Kirk will cross paths with a man he never had a chance to meet but whose legacy has haunted him since the day he was born: his father. The move has been rumored but never confirmed by the studio. Chris Hemsworth, who appeared in 2009’s Star Trek, will return to the space saga as George Kirk to star alongside Pine. The remaining cast also is expected to return with the exception of Anton Yelchin, who passed away last month and had played Chekov in the past three incarnations. No director has been named for the untitled fourth film. J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay will write the screenplay. J.J. Abrams and Lindsey Weber will produce through Bad Robot Productions. David Ellison and Dana Goldberg of Skydance will executive produce. Star Trek, the first film in the rebooted franchise based on the sci-fi series created by Gene Roddenberry, earned more than $380 million worldwide in 2009. The second installment, Star Trek Into Darkness, earned more than $460 million worldwide when it opened in May 2013. The series’ third film, Star Trek Beyond, is directed by Justin Lin and opens in theaters on July 22, 2016. |

What a horrible idea just to shoehorn a big star into the movie.

So I wonder now if there was a clause in his contract from the first movie that tied him into doing another one and they're pulling it now since he's become more famous? |

I'm cool with this.
I'd love to see them comb through old TOS episodes to find a scene where a female ensign was at the helm/nav for like 5 minutes in an episode and then create this whole backstory and arc for her. It would be awesome to watch the manbabies crying fedora-scented tears. |
re: Star Trek 4 (?) -- news, rumors, etc.
don't kill off Chekov.
have him transferred, alive and happy somewhere, and be done with it. maybe something about him being too smart for Starfleet as a joke or something... nice tribute to Anton, and to the beloved character. |
re: Star Trek 4 (?) -- news, rumors, etc.
Why not recast? It worked for a character like Dumbledore.

How dare you.
I like the retirement idea. He's off on a planet full of horny green skinned broads. |

Since there's no source material that they're adapting for the upcoming Star Trek films, they can just work around the character. |
re: Star Trek 4 (?) -- news, rumors, etc.
You could just ultimately leave it up to Walter Koenig. Chekov: dead or transferred? His call is final.

re: Star Trek 4 (?) -- news, rumors, etc.
If the current regime cared at all about what the old actors think, they wouldn't have made Sulu gay. They're definitely not gonna leave it to Koenig to make the call.

Well, Chekov wasn't part of the crew on the original series until later...kinds of make sense that in this reboot universe he'd be with them early, then not be with them later.

I would say he was sent to contact Nero on Romulus to discuss the actions of Nero Prime in the 1st film...and Nero Killed him.

S.J. Clarkson has been tapped to direct “Star Trek 4,” making her the first female to helm a film in the “Star Trek” franchise. Paramount Pictures had no comment. The studio announced at CinemaCon in Las Vegas that it was planning a fourth movie with Chris Hemsworth, who appeared as Chris Pine’s father in 2009’s “Star Trek.” Zachary Quinto is also set to return. Paramount is developing another “Star Trek” film from J.J. Abrams and Quentin Tarantino, but sources say it is still being written and would come after the fourth movie. While details on “Star Trek 4” are vague, sources say a key plot point sees Pine’s character running into his father (Hemsworth) in a time travel ploy. J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay penned the screenplay. Abrams and Lindsey Weber will produce through Bad Robot Productions, while David Ellison and Dana Goldberg of Skydance Media will executive produce. The original 2009 reboot “Star Trek” earned $385 million worldwide, while its sequel “Star Trek: Into Darkness” made $467 million globally in 2013. The third, “Star Trek Beyond,” brought in $343 million worldwide in 2016. Clarkson is best known for her work on the TV scene with shows such as “Dexter,” “Bates Motel,” “Orange is the New Black,” and “Jessica Jones.” She recently directed a handful of episodes for Marvel’s “The Defenders.” Clarkson is repped by WME. Looks like they’ll do the Hemwsorth story first, then possibly the QT script. |

I hope she can pull it off. Most TV directors that make movies wind up making them look like TV episodes with a budget.

I would assume MiB then this. |

I figured Tarantino directing was a long shot but I can’t say I’m not slightly disappointed. It could have been something interesting. At least his script might be used.
