Re: Star Trek Beyond (Lin, 2016) — The Spoiler Filled Reviews Thread
I really liked the first nuTrek, and don't mind the generic or lighter tones being done these days with the movies. However, this one didn't do a single thing for me.

Just watched this.
I wasn't too impressed.
Karl Urban's line delivery comes across as weird to me. Doesn't seem natural for some reason.
A lot of this film reminded me of Galaxy Quest for some reason. The villains boarding the ship looked like some random video game aliens or the ones in Galaxy Quest.
I didn't like being it over the head with the theme of unity.
Leonard Nimoy really is irreplaceable as Spock. His Spock really felt alien and unique. Zachary Quinto is just not that interesting to watch. He kinda reminded me of Quellek from Galaxy Quest except less endearing.
Chekov's accent felt more forced than the original.
The main villain Krall was pretty boring. Boring visual design, boring motive.
The only cool part he had was in the video footage where he says "you'll probably never see me again but if you do...be ready." They had Idris Elba and wasted a potentially great performance with all that stupid makeup and prosthetics.
A lot of the action felt like I was watching a video game. I wasn't emotionally vested in anything. Someone mentioned that scene where Scottie is holding on the edge of a cliff with one hand. Never felt tense.
Jaylah was great though. Hopefully she'll be in the next Star Trek. Seeing York Town was cool.
This film made me miss the exploration aspect of Star Trek.

Always felt Anton's accent seemed forced to the point of being annoying. RIP
Jaylah I would guess will end up being Chekov's replacement since she was the best things about that movie.

I randomly checked out some professional critic reviews and one of them also mentioned that it felt like Galaxy Quest, citing the giant/tiny creatures that attack Kirk at the beginning. The critic also mentioned the waste of Idris Elba under the generic make up.

Only more so. Walter Koenig's never seemed like a true Russian accent but I guess it didn't seem so out of place with stunt men in obvious monster suits. On the big screen, whether it Koenig or Yelchin it was more obvious and more out of place. Yelchin seemed to beat Koenig in the annoying category, at least for me, by a head, to use a horse racing analogy.

Yelchin did a fine job, and I was happy with him in the role. He will be missed.

Just watched it on Hulu, and this pretty much sums it up. I haven't felt the need to revisit any of the other new films, and that streak will continue with this one. I do think they have done a nice job with "continuing" the characters from the original series, but I would have a much different opinion on the character development across this film series if I didn't already "know" the characters from the earlier series and films.
This (and the use of the music itself) was possibly the stupidest thing about the film, but I did get a chuckle out of the nod to Futurama when they referred to it as "classical."

The same is true for Yelchin. In fact, Yelchin was actually born in Russia.
