Chappie (2015, D: Blomkamp) S: Copley, Patel, Jackman, Die Antwoord
Sony Pictures Entertainment and MRC have agreed to co-produce and co-finance Chappie, the next film from writer-director Neill Blomkamp, it was announced today by Doug Belgrad, president of Columbia Pictures and Hannah Minghella, president of Production for the studio, and MRC. The film will be marketed and distributed worldwide by Sony Pictures.
Blomkamp will direct the film from a screenplay he has written with Terri Tatchell. He will also produce the film with Simon Kinberg. Production is expected to begin this fall.
Chappie tells the story of a robot imbued with artificial intelligence who is stolen by two local gangsters who want to use him for their own nefarious purposes. The film will star Sharlto Copley as the voice of Chappie, with Ninja and Yolandi Visser, voices of the South African Zef counter-culture movement and members of rap-rave duo Die Antwoord, as the two gangsters.
Commenting on the announcement, Belgrad said, “We’re huge fans of Neill Blomkamp – it’s a real thrill to be continuing our relationship with such a visionary and important filmmaker. Neill has proven that he is a true original voice and we expect that Chappie will strike a chord with worldwide audiences in the same way that District 9 and Elysium have. We love the script he and Terri have written and we’re looking forward to working again with our friends at MRC.”
“Neill is an incredibly talented and bold artist and we are proud to continue to support his work. We are looking forward to partnering with the team at Sony on Chappie,” said Modi Wiczyk, co-CEO of MRC.
The announcement comes as Sony Pictures and MRC released Elysium, Blomkamp’s second feature, starring Matt Damon and Jodie Foster, which Blomkamp wrote and directed and also produced with Bill Block and Simon Kinberg. Elysium opened at #1 in the U.S. this weekend, and was also #1 in Russia, Sweden, Taiwan and Ukraine. Sony Pictures also released Blomkamp’s first feature film, District 9, which took in over $200 million worldwide and earned four Oscar® nominations, including Best Picture.

I was there the moment i heard of it. Still hoping for a District 10 one day. It doesn't really need a sequel but it teases of continuing narrative.

Hate the title, but I'm in for anything Blomkamp and Copley team up on. I'm very intrigued to see how Die Antwoord can act; they're so fucking bizarre.

Loved Elysium, but a little hesitant with Copley headlining this one.
I wonder what happened with that whole agribusiness thing he was teasing with that pig creature found with a corporate stamp.

The Die Antwoord duo in a movie? I hope its a comedy. Otherwise, I am not picturing how that is going to work.

I keep seeing this and thinking that Dave Chappelle is getting a movie.

It sounds like a comedy made for kids. Given the director I know that's not the case but that's the vibe the OP gives me.

Sounds like a comedy, could be fun. This has been given a Spring 2015 release date. Oh yeah, Die Antwoord for those that don't know (NSFW):

Hugh Jackman is joining the cast of Chappie, from District 9 and Elysium helmer Neill Blomkamp. He’s attached to play the rival of Dev Patel’s character in the South Africa-set sci-fi pic about an android cop (mo-capped by Sharlto Copley) who’s kidnapped by gangsters (Yo-Landi Visser and Ninja of the rap duo Die Antwoord). Sony and MRC are co-producing the pic.

Didn't know this was supposed to be loosely based on his film Tetra Vaal.

After District 9 I was ready for anything Blomkamp did next. Then I saw what he did next and now I'm much more hesitant.

I'd like to see him do something AWAY from SA or slums. And create some fantastical world without the political message.

I was in for this once Die Antwoord mentioned it on their FB while back.
Little known fact. Ninja was actually going to play Matt Damon's roll in Elysium.
They aren't for everyone but have enjoyed most their work since "MaxNormal. TV - Good Morning South Africa"
I can enjoy these films without paying too much attention to the political aspects and they are fun so not expecting anything less in this film.

Take Wikus' voice from District 9 and amplify it with Red Bulls. And then Die Antwood is no better trying to listen them speak. I just think it would have been better if it was taken out of South Africa and put in some other part of the world.
