The Nun (2018) -- The Conjuring spinoff -- S: Demián Bichir, Taissa Farmiga

New Line is developing a bad habit.

Fresh off the success of The Conjuring 2, the film company is spinning off the villain of the supernatural thriller, the demonic nun, into her own movie.

David Leslie Johnson, who co-wrote Conjuring 2, has been hired to pen what is being titled The Nun. James Wan, who directed the Conjuring movies, and Peter Safran, who produced them, are reuniting to produce the spinoff.

What is noteworthy about the demon nun character is that she didn’t exist until about three months before Conjuring 2 opened, as she was only added during last-minute reshoots.

The studio and Wan had a cut of the movie, which stars Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga as paranormal investigators, in which the antagonist was a demonic figure with horns. The studio was ready to release that version but at the last minute, Wan was struck by a revelation. And so he came up with a new concept, a demon nun, which he pitched to New Line. And even though the late-in-the-game change could have spooked some studios, New Line exec gave him their blessing.

The shoot took place in March, just three months before the movie was scheduled to open on June 10. Some of the changes were minor: The art piece that Wilson is painting was altered digitally as the horned demon made way for the demon nun. Some were more extensive, such as a set piece in which Farmiga watches in terror as a shadow crawls across the wall to line up with the painting and … (well, you'll just have to see the movie to learn more). Bonnie Aarons, under heavy makeup, played the character.

The Nun will be the second spinoff from the Conjuring series, following 2014’s Annabelle. That movie proved to be a horror hit when it ultimately grossed over $256 million worldwide (or nearly 40 times its production budget). New Line has now slated an Annabelle sequel for 2017.

The Conjuring franchise remains popular as Conjuring 2 was not only the No. 1 film in North America but also No. 1 internationally this past weekend outside of China. It was also the biggest opening weekend ever for a horror film in 30 markets including Australia, Mexico, Brazil, all of Latin America and most markets in Asia. The movie has already grossed over $100 million worldwide in five days of release.

I haven't seen the second Conjuring movie yet. I didn't know about those late reshoots. It would be cool to have the original vision for the film included on the eventual Blu-ray. That would be an interesting comparison.

Yeah, with enough control to do substantial reshoots 4 months out I can see why Wan would rather do these movies than death grip films by committee like Furious 7.

I also think it's funny that his doll movie Dead Silence tanked, but the Doll spin-off from The Conjuring did incredibly well.

re: The Nun (2018) -- The Conjuring spinoff -- S: Demián Bichir, Taissa Farmiga

EXCLUSIVE: Director Corin Hardy is at the altar with New Line on The Nun, the second spinoff to the hit genre film The Conjuring. Scripted by Gary Dauberman and James Wan, and produced by Wan and Peter Safran, the film gives front-and-center treatment to the demonic nun who menaced Vera Farmiga’s character throughout The Conjuring 2. This is the second spinoff, after Annabelle, which has a sequel bowing August 11. The Conjuring universe quickly is becoming one of the biggest horror franchises, already grossing a collective $897 million worldwide.

This will be the next film directed by Hardy, who long has been in development on the remake of The Crow, which now has Jason Momoa attached and needs to land at a studio after finally shaking loose from Relativity. Hardy has been considered one of those directors to keep an eye on since helming the animated short Butterfly and for directing music videos for the likes of Ed Sheeran, Biffy Clyro, Keane, Paolo Nutini and the Prodigy.

Hardy is repped by WME, Elevate Entertainment and Felker Toczek Suddleson Abramson.

I worked with Bonnie on a shoot for some Rihanna bullshit a little over a year ago. She is one eccentric, weird lady. She definitely has a face for horror.

re: The Nun (2018) -- The Conjuring spinoff -- S: Demián Bichir, Taissa Farmiga

Demian Bichir has been cast in New Line’s horror-thriller “The Nun,” a spinoff movie based on the demonic character in “The Conjuring 2” with British director Corin Hardy on board.

The studio began developing “The Nun” last June, shortly after “The Conjuring 2” opened. Producers are James Wan, who directed the two “Conjuring” movies and produced the sequel, and Peter Safran, who produced both movies. The current script for “The Nun” is written by Gary Dauberman and Wan.

The demon nun came to life in “The Conjuring 2” from a painting by Patrick Wilson’s paranormal investigator Ed Warren and later attacked Vera Farmiga’s Lorraine Warren. “The Conjuring 2” deals with the 1977 case of demonic possession of an 11-year-old British girl, played by Madison Wolfe.

New Line has already successfully spun off 2014’s “Annabelle” from the demonic doll from 2013’s “The Conjuring.” “Annabelle” was a massive hit with $256 million worldwide on a $6 million budget, with a sequel set for August. “The Conjuring” and “The Conjuring 2” each grossed $320 million worldwide.

New Line announced on Feb. 2 that it had hired Hardy for “The Nun,” which will be released next year on July 13 — a Friday the 13th.

Bechir was nominated for the Academy Award for best actor for “A Better Life” in 2012 and played Bob in Quentin Tarantino’s “The Hateful Eight.” He’ll be seen next in Fox’s “Alien: Covenant.”

Bichir is repped by CAA.

With Demian Bichir in this I am hoping it takes place in Mexico or in East L.A. The Catholic angle I see them going in has some great possibilities.

Are the characters of the Warrens going to appear in this? Because that would be freaky if they both shared the screen at one time.

Well played. Also, the contrast with Bechir being Mexican and playing a priest -- it reminds me of The Exorcist series form a few months ago. Mexican priest against the forces of darkness. It was great.

My first thought when I saw the headline was the Taissa Farmiga would be playing a young Lorraine Warren. It's kind of odd having her play the young nun but I'm a fan of Taissa anyway so I'm all for it.
