Mel Gibson is Planning a Passion of the Christ Sequel
Mel Gibson has plans for a Passion of the Christ sequel detailing Jesus’ resurrection
A Passion of the Christ sequel is reportedly in the works. The Hollywood Reporter today brings word that director Mel Gibson is looking to re-team with Braveheart scribe Randall Wallace for a feature film that will detail the story of Jesus’ resurrection following the crucifixion detailed in 2004’s The Passion of the Christ.
The original Passion of the Christ, which stars Jim Caviezel as Jesus, Maia Morgenstern as Mary and Monica Bellucci as Mary Magdalen, was a sizable box office hit, pulling in more than $611 million globally. It was scripted by Benedict Fitzgerald alongside Gibson himself.
According to the trade, Wallace is currently working on the screenplay for the Passion of the Christ sequel having recently reteamed with Gibson on the upcoming World War II drama Hacksaw Ridge. Scripted by Wallace and Robert Schenkkan, Hacksaw Ridge focuses on 1945’s three-month military assault Operation Iceburg, also known as the Battle of Okinawa. “Hacksaw Ridge” was the name given the location of a particularly brutal two-week confrontation wherein United States troops faced off against Japanese soldiers on the rocky cliffs of Okinawa.
Hacksaw Ridge stars Andrew Garfield, Sam Worthington, Luke Bracey, Teresa Palmer, Hugo Weaving, Rachel Griffiths and Vince Vaughn and tells the story of Corporal Demond Doss (Garfield), the first conscientious objector to receive the US congressional Medal of Honor. Drafted into World War II at age 23, Doss was raised a Seventh-day Adventist, he refused to kill or carry a weapon and, as such, became stationed as a medic. President Harry S. Truman presented Doss with his commendation on November 1, 1945, citing numerous acts of bravery and sacrifice performed by Doss in the line of duty.
Look for Hacksaw Ridge to hit theaters November 4, 2016 and check back for updates on the Passion of the Christ sequel as they become available.

Hmmm, I wouldn't be surprised if Gibson puts up most of the money himself to get it made since the studios want nothing to with him anymore.

I'm guessing it'll cover the resurrection to the Ascension. That hasn't been done too often in any kind of movie or TV. It'll be as controversial as the first knowing how Gibson handles it. But I liked the first, I hope he keeps the same tone and look to it.

considering how the first one did and how well faith based movies do, I think funding it himself would actually be a wise investment.

It'll be interesting if he does the Church circuit rounds, talks about his personal failings, etc. We're the country of comebacks, and I will always root for anyone to be able to make a comeback...so I'm very much rooting for not only this but his WW2 movie.

I can see the film's tagline line now:
