Re: Ghostbusters (2016, D: Feig)

Saw another trailer for this at Finding Dory today. Hadn't seen this trailer before (first shot is Hemsworth answering the phone, but not the "what's this place called?" bit, this appears to be later than that)

Anyway, it was one of those trailers that seemed to give too much away. The "someone trying to increase paranormal activity in the city" is blatantly obvious in this one, if it wasn't already kind of obvious in the previous trailers. This trailer had the Fall Out Boy version of the theme song in it. Ugh.

The script changed after Murphy backed out. In the original version, Winston was supposed to be as highly qualified as the rest of the team.

WINSTON: I've come about the ad in the paper. You know, for a security expert.

STANTZ: Okay. Do you have a resume?

WINSTON: I have all my service records.

STANTZ: What'd you do in the service?

WINSTON: Five years, US Air Force Air Police. I mustered out as Captain assigned to administer perimeter security at Reese Strategic Air Command Base. From there I designed electronic barrier systems for Sentry Alarms and I ended up as VP Tactics and Training at their Pacific Headquarters, until they closed the offices there.

What's hard to believe about Eddie Murphy being a scientist? Is it because he's black?

At the time of filming, he only would have been 22, that seems pretty young for a scientist or an experienced military man.

Plus, backpacks are heavy.

So you don't think he's capable of playing older characters? Most actors aren't the age of the character they're playing.

I'm just messing with you, I don't give a shit. I was 5 when Ghostbusters came out, I couldn't have guessed the age of someone older than 10.

Somebody claimed that McCarthy isn't believable as a scientist because she's loud and obnoxious. If that's true, Murphy should be equally unacceptable to people, even though Dan Aykroyd wanted him in the film.

It is tough to separate the actor from the character when every character they play is the same loud and obnoxious type. Unfortunately, this film seems to have several of these.

There are a lot of bad ideas for good movies that never materialized. I seem to remember John Candy was going to play Louis as a weird German with German Shepard dogs. Eventually they went with Rock Moranis. That's the nice thing about making movies, at some point most bad ideas are mixed before production. Then of course, sometimes they aren't...

Well, isn't that an indictment of the status of 80s Hollywood and its lack of opportunity for black actors that weren't playing up to caricatures? We've come a long way since then, there is more room for black actors to play actual people instead of loud stereotypes. Murphy built his career playing up to that, and it's what audiences wanted to see. Are we still stuck in that mentality, or are we mature enough to move on and give black actors better roles?

Rather than quoting the whole string, I just picked a few posts ...

I'm going to agree with you Supermallet. They key word here is ACTOR. I think the reason this has become so difficult to do is that Hollywood has shunned true actors in favor of characters. An actor could pull off different roles across many spectrums. A character forces his or her own personality through and makes the role into a version of his or her self no matter how the character was writtten.

As I said, I am not familiar with these ladies as actors so I am seeing the extremely shallow stereotypes they are playing. I just saw Leslie Jones' All-State commercial and I'm inclined to say she is not an actor (in the sense I am using it). I am aware of the type of character McCarthy has typically played, and this seems to be more of the same.

To be fair, I will concede the original may not have been far off that mark either.

If the world is going to make you rich for being a one-trick pony, all the more power to you. Just don't try to tell me you are a show horse.

I loved "Rock" Moranis back in his wrestling days!

I'm not sure if you are referring to my comment or not, but I didn't say she was not believable as a scientist because she's loud and obnoxious, I said it was because she exclusively plays vulgar, uneducated, blue collar type characters. She doesn't seem to have it in her to change, just like I doubt Larry the Cable Guy has it in him to be in Branagh's next Shakespeare adaptation.

Eddie Murphy had already played smart characters in Trading Places and Beverly Hills Cop, in fact he almost exclusively plays characters who are wise, street-wise, or both.

You've never heard of casting against type? Granted, sometimes it doesn't work. Other times it's magic.

Re: Ghostbusters (2016, D: Feig)

Just saw a new to me commercial for this.

I'll be shocked, shocked I say if this movie is good.

Preview was mostly Jones yelling and slapping McCarthy.

It also threw in who the villain is.
