2016: The Year of Cinematic Mediocrity?

Do you guys think we are undergoing a SLUMP in movie quality lately, compared to the AWESOME HIGH of movies we got last year?

2014 was the year of mediocrity.

Funny, I thought last year was mediocre and this year so far is much better.

Re: 2016: The Year of Cinematic Mediocrity?

We're not. A lot of the big money-makers of the year (so far) have all been pretty good: Zootopia, Jungle Book, Civil War, Deadpool. Even X-Men Apocalypse was a decent entry (reviled only due to superhero fatigue).

There's still half the year left, along with these films:

Finding Dory
The BFG
Star Trek Beyond
Jason Bourne
Suicide Squad
Kubo and the Two Strings
Sully
Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk
Moana
Rogue One

Now, I don't think every one of these movies will be earth-shattering, but there's bound to be a few good ones and maybe one or two classics in there.

By the end of May last year, the only <i>great</i> films released were:

Mad Max: Fury Road
Ex Machina
Sicario
Jurassic World

Looking at my list of 2015, there's already one movie (<b>The Walk</b>) where I was unable to recall what it was about (i.e. I had to google it to see what it was about).

No. X-men and BvS were disappointments. Civil War, Deadpool, Zootopia, 10 Cloverfield Lane, The Nice Guys and The Jungle Book more than made up for them.

For those that enjoy less bombast with their movies, The Lobster, Weiner, My Name is Doris, Everybody Wants Some!!, and quite a few others were solid.

Leaving documentaries out of it, the only American theatrical releases I've seen in the last four years that I have any use for are these four:

DJANGO UNCHAINED
LUCY
THE EXPENDABLES 3
WELCOME TO ME

I've actually liked more documentary releases during this same period, most recently WEINER.

2014 had The Lego Movie and Guardians of the Galaxy
2015 had Inside Out and The Kingsman
2016 has Zootopia and Deadpool

Well so far the last three years have each featured a sublime animated movie and a droll comic book movie. Business as usual, and business seems good.

Since I don't only watch what the major studios put out, I have no problem with any of the recent years in regards to quality.

oh, fuck off.

Mediocre, my taco loving ass. Every fucking year we have mediocre out the ass based on how easy it is to get a film distributed by so many mediums alone if you get out of mainstream big studio types. We ain't even at the halfway mark yet for the year.

Shiiiiiiiiiiiiite. OP motherfucker here obviously doesn't watch enough movies if he thinks we're already thigh deep in the shit to where his balls/pussy are already gracing the top layer of the shit pool as they walk about.

It's fine if you enjoy it and all. Entertainment isn't controlled by quality but it ain't great either. Maybe you were fully entertained to the point where you thought it was a quality film... but it wasn't quality. I liked it too but it was a very stupid film throughout.

The year critics became fanboys.

This year has The Witch, ergo it is at least as good, if not better than last year.

Motherfucker-with-balls-gracing-the-top-layer-of-the-shit-pool reporting for duty! You sir, have a way with the written word.

He's certainly fond of profanity, though by this point, that was eminently obvious and has been throughly well-documented.

I dunno man, if blockbusters are the measuring stick when it comes to a good year for movies and a bad year for movies, I'd say every year is mediocre.

You mean all the ones that everyone went crazy about on this forum, propelling me to go see them and come out thinking, "What the hell is wrong with these people?" (INTERSTELLAR, JOHN WICK, KINGSMAN, DEADPOOL, JUNGLE BOOK, etc.)

It's the only one out of the four I would consider “popcorn fare” but it was done well. I'd put <b>Fast Five</b> in the same list.

It also had the greatest single scene in cinema for all of 2015.

No, of that list Interstellar is the only one I gave half a damn about. I mean more like Whiplash, Mud, Joe, Killer Joe, Stoker, Passion, Nightcrawler, Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, James White, Sicario, A Most Violent Year, The Big Short. Just to name a few.
