This is one of my favorite horror shorts on youtube, hopefully they can stretch the premise out to a satisfying full feature. I'll definitely check it out when I get the opportunity.

The short film and the movie look to have two different antagonists.

I"m not sure I totally agree, but we will see. They appear to have similar motivations and backgrounds.

The short was indeed excellent, not surprisingly this looks quite awful.

The first trailer looks better but I'll still see it.

What was the last decent full length film that was made from a short film? I can't think of one. They usually stretch a premise pretty thin and end up being lackluster.

Edit: I guess maybe The Evil Dead or 12 Monkeys.

This looks like it'll pair well with Before I Wake, though that was more a fantasy flick with horror elements and this looks better.

Re: Lights Out -- D: Sandberg S: Palmer, Bello, Burke -- Produced by James Wan 7/22/1

Went to a sneak preview tonight. There were some giggles during parts of the first act. As one can tell from the trailer, there are plenty of jump scares. There is a creepy atmosphere and the movie finds ways for the lights to go out at the worst times...as if that wasn't expected.

The main two differences between the short and this movie is in the movie, when there is regular light, you don't see the antagonist at all. And, of course, the movie gets into the relationship between the antagonist and the others in the movie.

I did not stay to see if there's a scene after the credits. You know, one of those scenes that changes the end. Any way, mild recommendation.

Opens Friday. Up to 18 reviews on RT, with only 1 of them being negative. An average score of 7/10. This could end up doing really well.

Re: Lights Out -- D: Sandberg S: Palmer, Bello, Burke -- Produced by James Wan 7/22/1

I dug this quite a bit. I thought the acting was tremendous, and not just for horror movie standards.

Diana is a scary bitch. I'll admit I jumped a few times. This is a great movie to bring a girl to, she will be all over you burying her face in your chest.

What a dark ending too, but good.

Think I may even pick this up on BD when it's cheap enough. Worth checking out, I give it my full recommendation. I'd say it's my favorite horror movie of the year so far, better than The Conjuring 2.

Re: Lights Out -- D: Sandberg S: Palmer, Bello, Burke -- Produced by James Wan 7/22/1

Hated it - Bello and Palmer were fine but the kid was horrible - his performance was so one note I couldn't stand it. That could be overlooked if the story didn't play out like a lifetime movie (the crazy mom, the abandonment issues, child protective services) - the motivations for characters actions were non-existent and they were very flexible with the rules when it came to Diana. There is a line like 20 minutes in that makes the ending inevitable/predictable and with the exception of the black light sequence, I found a lot of the scares to be just OK.

It is mercifully short at 80 minutes but I just didn't buy into it - this is a great concept that could have been exceptional with better characters/setup around them. Honestly, Sandberg did a decent job with the direction but this thing needed a rewrite/overhaul in my opinion and with James Wan's name on it, I was hugely disappointed. The Conjuring 2 and this aren't even in the same league - stick this one next to Annabelle.

I agree with some of this, but I thought the scares were quite good. When the scares are good and the creepy vibe is strong, I can forgive most other things. Which was the case for me watching this. I dug it. 7/10.

Re: Lights Out -- D: Sandberg S: Palmer, Bello, Burke -- Produced by James Wan 7/22/1

Disappointed.

Based on reviews, I was hoping this would be another entry in the line of It Follows - The Babadook - The Conjuring - horror movies that deliver quality performances, a real sense of dread, and some originality. I also loved the short film it was based on.

But it was only "ok." The jump scares were effective, but were not accompanied by any sense of dread. The only scene that put me on the edge of my seat was the scene with the blinking "Tattoo" sign. The rest of the time I was just sitting there thinking, "This is gonna make me jump. Yep, I jumped." But there was no dread or chilling anticipation.

Acting was decent, but as often happens in horror movies with children, the kid was saddled with lines that no kid would utter in real life. Like saying to his older sister, "I'm holding you back." He was also irrationally calm mere moments after occurrences that would leave most kids pissing themselves.

It is definitely deserving of a watch and has its quality moments, but I expected more from it.

Got free passes to see it while at SDCC but was too tired to do the con then go see a movie.
From what I've been reading, I may have saved myself from an exhausting night at the movies.
