Purple Rain Returns To Theaters This Weekend (4/23-4/28)
Prince's Purple Rain will play in AMC theaters this weekend
rince's iconic 1984 film Purple Rain is returning to theaters this weekend. Variety reports that, as a way of honoring the lost legend, AMC has partnered with Warner Bros. to screen the film in 87 locations across the country from tomorrow, April 23rd through Thursday, the 28th.
Purple Rain, both the film and the album that shared its name, is Prince's best known work and is widely regarded as what shot him to superstardom. The film is a semi-autobiographical story about a young musician known only as "The Kid" who, in order to escape an unhappy home, sets out to become a rock star. The film won the Academy Award for Best Original Song Score — the last to receive the honor — and tracks from the film like "Let's Go Crazy" and "When Doves Cry" went on to top the Billboard charts. Purple Rain is a cult classic like no other, and if you can see it in theaters, you absolutely should.

If they are not playing the actual FILM, then this is no different than me playing the movie from BD on my projector and screen.

If you want to see it in 35mm head on over to The New Beverly. At least I think it's playing there - I saw them post clips of them prepping the film reels.

Hope they do a unrated cut where you see all of Apollonia when she takes her clothes off before jumping into the lake.

I would love to see the original cut. Jill Jones had a bigger part and had a crush on Prince in the movie. The rough cut or workprint was a couple hours long. In the trailer there's footage of Prince punching Morris Day. Said scene didn't make the final cut.

The soundtrack is killer, but the movie just isn't very good.

From what I remember about the BD reviews of it... it wasn't all that hot to begin with. Competent or average... at best.
I'd assume a digital/film source on the big screen would be much better? Unless there's something w/ how WB took care of it.

Or you can watch it for free on VH1, MTV, or SD on VH1 on Sat and Sun. The quality of acting might not be worth paying admission lol.
Even at the age of 10 Appollonia was smoking and a knockout back then.
Now I know the name Jill Jones the blonde chic in the 1999 video though maybe not so hot when the hat is removed and she is not doing those sexy moves.

The theatre/performance center in my town is doing a free showing of the movie on Saturday, April 30.

I went ahead and bought it there. Pretty good quality for the price. It's a guilty pleasure. 8 Mile owes a lot to this movie IMO. Some of the acting isn't the best, but the themes throughout the movie are pretty powerful. Plus Prince was simply amazing in this. I refuse to watch his other films, because there's no way they're even remotely as good as this one was/arguably still is.

I was wondering who was actually going to see this (our crappy triplexed arthouse is showing it), but seeing the prices discs are going for on Ebay it looks like it's out of print right now. I just watched the Blu-Ray and the compression is pretty bad since they fit the movie and all the extras on a single-layer disc. Pissed me off that they updated the Warner Bros intro too. Hopefully they'll do a cash-in reissue with better quality. I have the HD-DVD also but that no longer plays- I went through about 5 copies to get one that didn't freeze up in the middle, now that has stopped playing completely.

Hmm, looking at Amazon the discs actually aren't out of print, they've just sold out quickly after his death, proving that there are a lot of stupid Ebay buyers. If anyone goes to the theater showing, please let me know if it opens with the animated CG Warner shield instead of the still-frame one it originally did.

I didn't think there were as many of those as there were sellers, but this has proven me wrong. You can still get the Blu-Ray from Amazon for $9.99 but have to wait a bit since it's out of stock, so instead people are bidding in the $50 range on Ebay.
