Black Widow (2021, D: Shortland) - S: Scarlett Johansson - News and Rumors

‘Black Widow’ Movie Planned for Marvel Phase 4?
Marvel's Kevin Feige says he wants to see a ‘Black Widow’ solo movie, but it probably won't happen before 2020.

Many fans were disappointed to hear that Captain Marvel would be the first solo female superhero adventure coming from Marvel Studios and Disney. Only because Black Widow seemed more deserving of the release date slot. But don't worry, it's not a slight on Scarlett Johansson's character. This is all part of the grand scheme laid out by Marvel Studios, and if everything goes according to plan, Black Widow should get her own solo movie in the near future. Though, it most likely won't be happening in Phase 3.

There is no doubt that Black Widow is one of the most interesting characters currently featured in the MCU. And while we've seen some of her exciting backstory revealed in Avengers: Age of Ultron, there is plenty more left to tell. So far, she has played second fiddle to heavy hitters Captain America and Iron Man, and she'll be even more on the peripheral in Captain America: Civil War. Still, she remains one of the most talked about and beloved characters in these movies. Marvel head honcho Kevin Feige knows this. And claims that a Black Widow movie is still very much possible.

Black Widow was first introduced in 2010's Iron Man 2. She later returned in Marvel's The Avengers in 2012, and had a co-starring role in 2014's Captain America: The Winter Soldier. She then made her latest appearance in Avengers: Age of Ultron. She is one of the few Avengers who does not have superpowers, which makes her even more vulnerable and fun to explore. But over the course of three phases her solo adventure has failed to materialize.

With fans calling out for more female driven superhero movies and action thrillers, it truly is a head scratcher why Scarlett Johansson hasn't been given her own movie yet. It definitely isn't on the fast track. Speaking at a press day for Captain America: Civil War, Kevin Feige discussed some of Marvel Studios' plans post-Avengers: Infinity War. And once again, he's teasing the possibility of a Black Widow standalone feature. He states the following.

"Yes, for sure, I think [Black] Widow at some point would be great. But when you start talking about things that are now four/five years away...Sometimes we do that. Doctor Strange has been talked about for ten years. But we're focused on the next nine movies, which is a lot, between now and 2019."
So, if it does happen, we won't see Black Widow by herself until at least 2020. But that shouldn't upset fans too bad. It's not like she won't have a presence on the big screen in the next five years. After Captain America: Civil War, Scarlett Johansson will move directly into Avengers: Infinity War Part I. And with a solo movie being teased, it sounds likely that she'll resurface in Avengers: Infinity War - Part II as well. She may even show up in 2017's Spider-Man, which is confirmed to feature a number of Marvel Studios characters. What do you think? Is it beyond time that we saw Black Widow get her own movie? Or is it moot at this point? Sound off in the comments below.

Black Widow comes to theaters in 2020.

Funny, because I've always felt BW works best as part of the ensemble. I don't really care to see her in a solo film.

Considering that Captain America: Civil War has something like 100 superheroes in it, from other studios even, and the next Thor movie co-stars the Hulk, I'm guessing any "Black Widow" titled movie would include other characters in it.

What a dumb article. Nothing but speculation. It is the same thing he's been saying for years. And then the article ends with "Black Widow comes to theatres in 2020"... no it isn't. Atleast as of now.

If it's structured like Lucy then it would work meaning that you let her kick ass and it'll make money. I can understand studio hesitation on having a solo female hero movie - Elektra was godawful, but I don't see that with an established character and story like Black Widow.

Make her look good kicking ass and they will come.

Heh? When did Captain Marvel become a woman?

This is the only iteration of CM that I'm aware of.

That's the DC version, not the Marvel version, and he's been renamed due to trademark issues between DC and Marvel.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captai...el_(DC_Comics)
Fawcett ceased publishing Captain Marvel-related comics in 1953, partly because of a copyright infringement suit from DC Comics, alleging that Captain Marvel was a copy of Superman.

In 1972, DC licensed the Marvel Family characters from Fawcett, and returned them to publication. By 1991, DC had acquired all rights to the characters. DC has since integrated Captain Marvel and the Marvel Family into their DC Universe and have attempted to revive the property several times, with mixed success.

Due to trademark conflicts over another character named "Captain Marvel" owned by Marvel Comics since 1967, DC chose to publish the character's adventures under the comic book Shazam! for many years, leading many to assume that this was the character's name. DC later renamed the character "Shazam" when relaunching its comic book properties in 2011.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captai...Marvel_Comics)
Following a trial in which DC Comics sued Fawcett Comics for breach of copyright, claiming Fawcett's Captain Marvel was too similar to Superman, the latter stopped publishing Captain Marvel.

In the late sixties Marvel gained the trademark "Captain Marvel" with their first series, forcing DC to call their Captain Marvel comic book Shazam! when they gained the rights to publish the vintage hero starting in the early 1970's.
The first female Captain Marvel premiered in 1982:

Do you remember Ms. Marvel, famously having her powers stolen by Rogue?

How can two rivals like Marvel and DC both have characters named Captain Marvel...wouldn't that name be trademarked by one of them? Sounds like a legal clusterfuck.

As long as it's not two hours of her whining how she's a monster since she can't get pregnant, I'm interested.

There's actually lots of characters from different companies that have the same name. For example, Marvel and DC both have a "Sandman", very different characters though. Only DC has the rights to publish a comic titled Sandman though.

It was the same deal with Captain Marvel. When the original CM ceased publishing for a number of years, their copyright on the comic title expired. When that happened, Marvel decided that they would like to have their own Captain Marvel, and they started publishing their own comic with that title.

When DC resumed publishing the original CM, they could no longer publish his adventures under that title.

If there was nudity and lots of her trying I would be all for it.

Yeah the article I posted was poorly written.

But I figured it was worthwhile to mention it's in the cards even though Marvel hasn't officially greenlit it yet.

The new Black Widow #1 that came out last month, would be an amazing opening to a solo movie. Highly recommended.

I was wandering down a toy aisle the other day and wondered why out of all of the Marvel action figures only Sandman's had "Marvel's" preceding the name. I wasn't intrigued enough to research it, and then in true lazy person style the answer was delivered. Thanks!

There's a lot of Marvel toys that have a "Marvel's" preceding the character name. Hawkeye, Vision and War Machine come to mind. It's a case where the name rights for toys are not totally in the clear, but if they differentiate it slightly, they can get away with it. To me, this first started happening in the early 2000s when Hasbro started reissuing their old G1 Transformer toys and had to name some of their characters with an "Autobot" prefix, like "Autobot Jazz."

It's needed to differentiate it from the Louis Armstrong action figure line.

The small nude scene aside, that's not exactly an accessible film. It's fascinating and frustrating as hell.
