I LOVE the cinematic version of the Black Widow. I've been dying to see a Black Widow movie for years.
I really hope this happens. (And I prefer the red headed Black Widow, too - that's the way the character has always looked in the comics as far as I know and it just works.)

Once the MCU started gaining steam, I had hoped that the movies would have different thematic identities. Depending on the characters, leaning more towards a thriller, a mystery, action (obviously), comedy (which we've had), etc. While still having the overall cohesiveness that the MCU would bring, there would be less of the increasingly homogeneous product that's been coming out. Kind of like what the Netflix Marvel shows are doing.

Marvel Studios has been looking for a director to break its glass ceiling with Black Widow and has been meeting with filmmakers such as Deniz Gamze Erguven (the Turkish movie Mustang), Chloe Zhao (The Rider) and Amma Asante (A United Kingdom), among several others. That search is still ongoing, according to sources.

UPDATE: A little more input on the Black Widow director search. I hear Cate Shortland, but sources said not to count out Amma Asante (Belle) and Maggie Betts (Novitiate) who round out the top three contenders culled from a field of 49. It was Shortland, Assante and Betts who met recently with Marvel’s Kevin Feige and Scarlett Johansson.
EARLIER: Biding its time by putting her in The Avengers and other superhero titles, Marvel is moving forward with a Black Widow film with Scarlett Johansson. While they are looking at female filmmakers, Deadline hears keep an eye on Australian helmer Cate Shortland on the short list. Her recent credits include Lore and most recently Berlin Syndrome. That is certainly a surprising choice. Haven't seen her movie yet. Would think she is a little early Into her career to be given the reins to such a high profile project but those Marvel folks deserve some benefit of the doubt and have succeeded with off the wall choices before, such as picking Taika Waititi for the last Thor flick.

Most of the directors they choose don’t have many huge credits under their belt when chosen. But it works out so well.

Article says the movie is expected to be a prequel that takes place before Avengers.
Makes sense. At least this director probably won't have to direct big action/special effects set pieces. I wonder if they will go back as far back and make it a Romanov origin story.

Probably won’t happen but this would make more sense as a film for the streaming service than a full on theatrical release in my opinion.

Calm down man. It’s nothing against Scarlett Johansson or Black Widow getting a film. It’s more just because it doesn’t feel like something that fits amongst the current slate of the MCU being set so far back already. Giving backstory to her character that's leading into a specific film when Phase 4 of the MCU is supposedly so different seems like a bit of an odd decision.

Eh. I still think its up for debate that she actually needs her own film (same way I feel about Hawkeye). This seems like its being done to appease the crowd who wants more female representation more than anything. It would have fit if it came when Phase One was in progress, not doing a prequel to a movie that's six years old currently (obviously will be older when this is out) and has had numerous sequels to already. Either that or they could have just set her film after Avengers 4 but I guess we don't know how everything falls into place yet. Don't get me wrong I'll see it and enjoy it like every other MCU film but I don't feel its entirely needed.

I can't wait to see Black Widow. She's been one of my favorite characters in the MCU after Cap and Falcon. If they do it right this could be the stylistic/tonal follow up to Winter Soldier, which many people pick as the best MCU movie.
