Re: Who would you like to see become the next James Bond?
I'll throw Luke Evans back in there. Maybe James McArdle if they do another reboot and start off a little earlier in Bond's career.
I like Elba in anything though, so a one-shot with him as Bond (story: aging 00-agent being forced to move into an executive position opts instead to go out with a bang. back story: adopted by Andrew Bond from Rhodesia during the Bush War where not-so-perfect father Bond was selling arms to all sides, some angst there) would be welcome.

Didn't you see SKYFALL? A movie named after the huge ancestral estate of the Bond family.
In OHMSS when Bond goes undercover as a representative of the British Heraldty(sp?), which investigates family trees of European noble families, Bond's own connection to nobility is evident with the Bond family crest and motto. The motto which was used as title for another movie, THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH.
The origin/backstory of so many classic characters reflect the times in which they were created. Bond, among others, are just oozing with white privilege.
To change their race you have to update them by rewriting their origin. Can the character be kept intact after the update or does he become someone else.
It's my opinion Bond wears his white privilege like a neon sign and couldn't be the same character if his race were changed.

The idea of James Bond "wearing his white privilege like a neon sign" is an interesting concept in and of itself.
It might make an interesting movie to have Bond working with another agent, like say Idris Elba as 003 or something, an older agent who was born into poverty, raised on the streets, and got pulled into spy game like La Femme Nikita, and became every bit Bond's shaken martini and baccarat equal. The black 003 agent would harder and tougher than Bond, who would played as more effete and refined by someone like Orlando Bloom. A buddy film with a posh upper class twit and Dirty Harry (or Craig's Bond, for that matter). "003" could also be spun off into films as well.

^ You pretty much just described the plot of Kingsman: The Secret Service.

As Josh said, maybe he’s been an agent longer than Bond. Heck, maybe he MENTORED Bond. He molded him into a great agent in spite of his “white privilege.”

And yet, it could totally work. I’d love Elba as an original, new double-oh character. They could even use his age as part of what defines him.

Henry Cavill or nothing.
Idris Elba, while a fine actor, just no...im not racist, but James Bond was created as a whte male - and Ian Flemming described the character with specific looks and features.
No need to go all inclusive here - keep the character as he was meant to be.
if they insist on going this route, then give me a fucking asian Zorro or a latino Shaft FIRST!

Have you considered that Bond was described that way because back then many more people were racist and describing him as anything other than white and entitled would have made it a failed book?

It's already been covered that Bond was based on Fleming and the special ops dudes he helped send on missions, a bunch of white Brits, so no racism there just personal experience reflected.

Personally I find it amusing that many are acting like being white is part of the character, similar to Hulk being Green. Bond was white because most anyone of power in England back then was white. That's it. It wasn't a specific detail, it was just going with the times. Times change. Elba in a suit is the epitome of Bond.

As I said, I'd love to see an Elba Bond one-shot.

If they were to redo OHMSS she'd make a good Tracy. Tracy had some hang ups but didn't take shit and could handle herself in a fight.

Kinda; back then would a black man have been able to join the special ops in England?

James Bond stories happen to be about one specific agent who has a backstory/origin that doesn't match with the other demographics.
Starship captains are all different races. Male and female. Captain Kirk happens to be an earth human.
