Then you know what? Let's change Alex Cross to an Asian guy. Let's change Harry Potter to be Latino.

I'm just trying to figure out if there is any other iconic character that people who are in favor of shaking up the Bond franchise would balk at.

I believe those defending Elba have been very clear that as long as it's a reboot, or set in the current time line, pretty much everything is up for a modern take. Probably because they realize, that like Bond, if whatever is being adapted didn't come from a period where straight white male supremacy was the default, there already would have been far more diviristy in the source material.

Doesn't need to be a reboot or specifically set in modern times for me to like Elba in the role.
I'm not even particularly interested in the franchise anymore, and heretofore didn't care if they recast it again.
However, when the Elba rumor mill started churning, my thought was that he would be a perfect fit.
Call me a rebel.

I wouldn't be opposed to someone like Sterling K. Brown getting cast as Mr. Fantastic in an MCU reboot. I think he'd be awesome (though I really like the Krasinski/Blunt suggestions). That character is big but isn't that iconic to me.

I believe this has been covered over and voer as well. Nbody to my knowledge has even implies they should do it to be PC (just for the sake of doing it). It's because they actor they supoprt is in their option the best fit. Hell, there are both wactors of mixed race that only those that know they familial history of the actor could say was defintively was one race or the other. And that's been true before Flemmeing even started writing novels.

I loved Craig in the role since I haven't really been good with the casting choices since young Connery. But that's a whole other, possibly equally heated, discussion.

Well, as I've already said, with the Broccoli's in charge, it won't ever happen. I'd put money on that.

I think it doesn’t help Craig’s case that he comes off like a whiney prick. Must be such a chore to play an iconic character like Bond and get paid boatloads. That’s soured me on his take quite a bit. I think his films are fifty-fifty. Casino Royale and Skyfall being the best of his four. The other two just being alright.

Him being miserable in the movies is what bothers me. Bond's not fun anymore. The tone of these films has been all over the place. It's a more serious, somber take on Bond but then they have silly winks like the ejector seat in the Aston Martin. It just all falls apart for me.

I too don't want to go off topic. But my favorite of all of them is From Russia With Love.

Re: Who would you like to see become the next James Bond?
I’ve never been been much of a Bond fan (and I haven’t read much of the first 8 pages of this thread), so I may be mistaken, but I was under the impression that James Bond was a code name that’s been recycled through different agents throughout the years. I figured that that became the in-world answer to changing actors

Presumably an Idris Elba Bond would be a soft reboot, so it's not fully comparable.
Unlike, say, Black Hermione in The Cursed Child, that everyone was losing their shit over.

Yes, I do own all the Ian Fleming James Bond books, including obscure stuff like The Diamond Smugglers and Thrilling Cities.
In Goldfinger, Bond thought that Jill (or Tilly) Masterson was mannish, which he thought was the inevitable consequence of giving women rights.
But, in the same book, he was able to fix Pussy Galore's lesbianism by slipping her some cock. So all hope was not lost.
Live and Let Die was a variation on yellow peril stories. All the Negros in America were following the orders of a criminal genius of that race. Oooh, goosebumps!
Just because Fleming made a character one way in the 1950s doesn't mean we shouldn't alter it to suit today's sensibilities.

I still don’t think it’s a bad idea. I mean there’s a very loose continuity amongst most of the films, logically it makes sense that he’s gone through all the decades yet hasn’t aged, and he’s changed appearance frequently.

The Craig Bond films all ready are a soft reboot, bringing the story back to Bond's origins. Casino Royale opens with him earning 00 status and license to kill.
