Disney's A Wrinkle In Time (2018, D: Ava DuVernay)

EXCLUSIVE: Selma director Ava DuVernay has just been set by Disney to direct A Wrinkle In Time, an adaptation of the 1963 Newbery Medal-winning Madeleine L’Engle fantasy classic novel that has a script by Oscar-winning Frozen writer and co-director Jennifer Lee. Deadline revealed February 8 that DuVernay had been offered this film and was also in the mix at DreamWorks for Intelligent Life, a sci-fi thriller scripted by Colin Trevorrow and his Jurassic World collaborator Derek Connolly. DuVernay now has the offer on that film and is in negotiations on a pic that has 12 Years A Slave Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o attached to a fable about a UN worker in a department designed to represent mankind if there was ever contact with aliens, who falls for a mystery woman who turns out to be one. That film is produced by Frank Marshall, Trevorrow and Big Beach principals Peter Saraf and Marc Turtletaub.

It is unclear which film will go first, but A Wrinkle in Time was first to close and it is the culmination of six months of courtship by Disney Motion Pictures president Sean Bailey and exec Tendo Nagenda. A Wrinkle In Time involves a young girl whose government scientist father has gone missing after working on a mysterious project called a tesseract, which involves being transported to a fifth dimension with mysterious inhabited planets. She takes part in a search for her father and sees some incredible creatures along the way.

Both films mark a big step up in scale for DuVernay, a former publicist who proved her mettle by making Selma — a period picture about the historic civil rights march led by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr — for $20 million. It won an Oscar and drew much acclaim. Selma in turn was a big step up from The Middle Of Nowhere, a $200,000 budget feature that won her the Grand Jury Prize and Best Dramatic Director awards at Sundance 2012, and the John Cassavetes Award at the Independent Spirits Awards. She is repped by CAA.

It's been a while since I've seen the original, I seem to recall liking it. I was probably a kid though, so who knows how I'd feel about it today. It's a great story, creepy in a lot of places.

I'm looking forward to this as I grew up loving the book.

I had to read this in 6th grade. Hated it with a passion. Thankfully, my family moved mid year so I got to skip 1/2 of it.

I also loathed the book when I read it, but perhaps now I might appreciate it more.

Never heard of this. Good trailer. Reminds me of Tomorrowland (high-concept uber-serious Disney). Which I loved. So this is something I'll need to see. Live-action high-concept fantasy movies like these can be hard to sell to mainstream audiences.

that looked pretty good to me. and good rendition of Sweet Dreams, though nothing beats Marilyn's Manson's version...

Looks very Alice in Wonderland/Alice Through the Looking Glass to me. I don't think that's a good thing. Disney has even staked out the same time of year.

I'll wait for reviews before I see this.

I loved the book as a pre-teen. But when I read it again forty years later, I saw its substructure.

It's a story about a girl who's smarter than the other children, who has a loving mother and lives in a wonderful home, who meets a boy and they instantly fall in love and support each other for the rest of their lives, who goes on an adventure to rescue her father when everyone else has given him up. She is given supernatural help, but she has the personal strength her to rescue her father herself. The great evil is conformity, it's the local manifestation of a spreading galactic evil, and the supernatural helpers are suspiciously like angels.

It didn't work for me anymore.

Still, the children bouncing their balls is one of the great images of children's literature. It's still creepy today.

Looks bad. Oprah's presence is a distraction and her costumes and makeup look too theatrical. Like a children's tv show.

Looks good to me.

If this is a hit, I couldn't explain why this succeeds and Tomorrowland (which I really liked) failed.

I'm pretty bad about enjoying anything with any kind of Scifi or fantasy bent, but I actually couldn't finish this one. I seem recall it had a heavy Judeo-Christian undertone also, am I thinking of the right book?

To be fair, if this pulls what Tomorrowland did it would potentially be conisdered a success, mostly because the budget is $87m lower.

SFX look a little overdone -- like the Tim Burton Alice in Wonderland movies. But my two girls will fucking love this, so we'll be there.

"From visionary director Ava DuVernay comes Disney’s A Wrinkle in Time, an epic adventure based on Madeleine L’Engle’s timeless classic which takes audiences across dimensions of time and space, examining the nature of darkness versus light and, ultimately, the triumph of love. Through one girl’s transformative journey led by three celestial guides, we discover that strength comes from embracing one’s individuality and that the best way to triumph over fear is to travel by one’s own light."

Seemed to be aimed to the YA crowd, which is, mainly, a big no for me.

When I taught 4th grade, I used to read this book to my students. I like the vision I am seeing here, so I will definitely be seeing it.

The negative reviews are mostly at that 2.5 out of 4 level, so the very least, it isn't tanking.

It'll be interesting what audience this attracts; I'm familiar with the book from elementary school, but I wonder if the young adult crowd will come out for this in droves.

It "feels" like a big movie, but I don't see much actual hype around it.

This is going to be a tougher one to pin down for box office numbers.

It's based on a popular book, it's catering to the PC/diversity crowds, has The Oprah etc. Could be a runaway hit but has some competition from our boxoffice champ Black Panther.

On the flip side, I too don't see or hear much buzz and when I hear my 10 year old say it "looks dumb" I gotta wonder if it will have legs or will it end up being one of the many flops at the box office, but folks will gladly rent it 2 months from now.

If I had to bet, I'd say it ends up being a mild hit but not blockbuster. But who knows for sure.

Sort of reminds me of the last "Annie" movie. Seemed to push all the right buttons like Wrinkle, but ended up a huge flop.

Wow, the "Top Critics" really dislike this one. Not a good sign.
