Pete's Dragon remake (8/12/16, D: Lowery) S: B.D. Howard, R. Redford, K. Urban

Didn't see a thread on this, so...

I didn't even know they were remaking this, but saw they just released a motion poster...

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/NBqAwAJqess" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

...and apparently a trailer is being released this weekend.

Doesn't look like there's a lot available about the plot. Bryce Dallas Howard plays a forest ranger who finds Pete in the woods and doesn't believe his stories about a dragon, Robert Redford plays her father, and Oakes Fegley plays the title character of Pete. Oona Laurence, Wes Bentley, and Karl Urban co-star. Also sounds like it's not going to be a musical this time, and Elliot (the dragon) will be CGI instead of hand-drawn.

I'm not usually one for remakes/reboots, but this is one I can actually get behind. Hoping the trailer provides some interest.

Well, looks like they changed a few things around, but still seems like a waste of time. And since it'll be in 3D (just about the only reason why I'd still see it), I can't wait until Disney DOESN'T release it on 3D Blu-Ray in the US.

I just hope they don't do flame-fart jokes like Trasnformers.

Flame-fart jokes done in 3D CGI is the only reason this should be made.

I loved the original when I was a kid, but I haven't seen it since. Seems like a good candidate for a remake. The cast looks good.

I know the dragon will be CGI, but I'm curious if it'll be 'cartoony' CGI (like a Pixar character) to keep in the spirit of the original or if they'll go for a more 'realistic' approach.

Is there anything carried over from the original besides the facts there's a dragon and a boy named Pete?

If Pete talks like Jodie Foster in "Nell", I'm in.

This looks kind of terrible.
I'll probably take my daughter to see it (if there's a 2D showing nearby)

From the looks of what little we got in the teaser and the names of the characters, I would say it's a complete re-imagining of the story.

I actually think it looks interesting, but obviously a more extensive trailer will tell.

Disney's website has a little more of a plot description...

For years, old wood carver Mr. Meacham (Robert Redford) has delighted local children with his tales of the fierce dragon that resides deep in the woods of the Pacific Northwest. To his daughter, Grace (Bryce Dallas Howard), who works as a forest ranger, these stories are little more than tall tales…until she meets Pete (Oakes Fegley). Pete is a mysterious 10-year-old with no family and no home who claims to live in the woods with a giant, green dragon named Elliott. And from Pete’s descriptions, Elliott seems remarkably similar to the dragon from Mr. Meacham’s stories. With the help of Natalie (Oona Laurence), an 11-year-old girl whose father Jack (Wes Bentley) owns the local lumber mill, Grace sets out to determine where Pete came from, where he belongs, and the truth about this dragon.

There was plenty carried over -- from Tarzan and Jungle Book.

This may be a very good movie, but why brand it as a remake of Pete's Dragon?

From what I read, the original Pete's Dragon was based on a 1950s short story intended to be used as an episode of the Disneyland television series:

It told of a young boy and his imaginary friend, a powerful dragon who could protect the boy from the joyless world all around him: a fairly dramatic psychological study it was, and perhaps for that reason the idea was played around with a little bit but ended up being shelved and mostly forgotten.
So, in a sense, they kind of re-imagined the original story to begin with. This time around, without knowing the exact contents of that original short story, it sounds (and looks) like something that may be more true to the source. So yes, I'd say it can definitely be branded as a remake, if nothing else than in the truest sense of they made it once, and now they're making it again.
