So did this end up being an Aronofsky version of the "Divine Comedy" while also being an absurdist comedy (and he and some critics seem to imply in their reviews)?

It would have been pretty demented to laugh. I didn't see much comedy in it. I guess you could find comedy in it, the same way you could find comedy in Requiem for a Dream's ending.

Spoiler:
It can sparsely be viewed as a ghost story. I think that's what most people were looking for. It's a surreal summary of creation and the apocalypse. Javier Bardem is God. Jennifer Lawrence is Mother Earth. Mankind fucks it all up (this is where the movie gets crazy). Lots of horror imagery. Mother Earth ends it and God restarts again and again.

Not really too hard to grasp. I'm positive I could watch it again and again and assign each character and moment to something specific.

Going in - I knew nothing about the movie. I actually thought it was going to be a straightforward film about some kind of cult (maybe along the lines of The Wicker Man).

Yeah that's what I've read, I won't be going in blind since I was far too fascinated by all the talk about the movie and haven't had a chance to see it yet.

I wound up skimming some guys summary of the movie, sort of Thug Notes style, and now want to see it just for the sake of seeing that visualized.

If this isn't just about the most pretentious bucket of symbol-heavy swill to come down the pike in a long time, I don't know what is. I enjoyed the tension of the first act (reminiscent of Rosemary's Baby), though Lawrence's acting isn't quite up to the task, but it goes progressively downhill, and the final 20-30 minutes are among the most farcical, outlandish, and laughable I have ever seen in a supposedly serious movie.

Sheesh, just watched it today and it's a mango-sized turd. One of the worst films of the year. Yes, I understood the metaphors and who "they" were, but it's just not a very good film.

I thought the first 2/3rd was a really well executed paranoia thriller, it just goes ridiculously off the rails.

That was a great write-up. I have no plans on seeing the film so the detail was nice.

Yeah, it's far stranger in the movie than it reads in the summary. Well executed, but mind bogglingly bizarre.

Saw it last night, all that symbolism and chaos reminded me of Lynch, Polanski and Buñuel, will most likely make my top 10 of 2017.

Re: mother! (2017, D: Aronofsky) S: Lawrence, Bardem, Pfeiffer, Harris

I enjoyed the movie. The first 2/3 was a slow build of tension, the last 1/3 was absurd chaos. Once discovered, the allegory was shoved down your throat, which was fine. I didn't think it distracted me too much. It's not one I'd recommend to too many people, and I can't see myself watching it more than maybe once again, but I'm glad I saw it.

I still haven't found Lawrence to be a particularly great actress. She seems to have two settings, emotionless and full-on, nothing really in between.

I thought she was good in this, but IMO her best acting was in Winter's Bone. I thought Javier Bardem and Michelle Pfeiffer were also very good.

I saw this several weeks ago and found it hilariously bad. Best comedy of 2017 IMO.
