Angus Scrimm from Phantasm dies at age 89

The problem with loving older horror films is that we are faced with the inevitability of the passing of some of the most iconic actors in the genre. As we get older, so to do they. And Death waits for no one, even those who portrayed the very essence of that malevolent force.
Last year saw the passing of some of horror’s most iconic figures, such as Christopher Lee and Wes Craven. Now 2016 opens with the passing of another icon, the esteemed and mysterious Angus Scrimm. Perhaps best known for his portrayal as the “Tall Man” in Phantasm, Scrimm’s towering height and gaunt figure helped him create a terrifying villain, one that would become one of horror’s most recognizable figures.
Phantasm director Don Coscarelli beautifully wrote, “Angus Scrimm passed away peacefully tonight surrounded by his friends and loved ones. He was 89 years old. His performance as the Tall Man is a towering achievement in horror film history. He was the last in a long line of classic horror movie stars. Angus was a terrific actor and an even better friend. He will be missed.”
Scrimm will appear in Coscarelli’s fifth Phantasm film, which bears the subtitle Ravager. The film will be released later this year. Additionally, J.J. Abrams is hard at work creating a 4K restoration of the original Phantasm.
You lived a long, wonderful life, Mr. Scrimm. Thank you for everything. I hope you rest in peace.

I was truly saddened to read this, tonight. I've never read anything but praise about how kind he was when meeting his fans.

I went to a horror convention in September that Angus was scheduled to attend. He was forced to cancel after his health took a turn, but Don had him on the phone during the Phantasm reunion panel and he listened in and took questions from the audience. A total gentleman who hated to disappoint his fans. Just seeing interview footage of the man, you can tell he absolutely relished having played one of cinema's greatest boogeymen.

Phantasm may not have been my favorite horror series, but it was the one I appreciated the most because Coscarelli was always doing something so different from the popular slasher icons. Scrimm played such an imposing, enigmatic character that, coming up on five films later, is still a mystery.
It's done, so we'll have one final film with him.

This pretty much breaks it down why he's involved with it. Big huge loss in the horror world. Next to Chainsaw, the Phantasm movies were the ones I grew to love when it came to appreciating horror growing up. RIP.

Phantasm is a hugely underrated horror franchise. I like every entry to varying degrees and the Tall Man is a classic villain. I suspect if the franchise had more stable ownership and active promotion that it would be more famous today.
May he rest in peace.

I thought the first Phantasm was very good despite the disjointed script and sometimes shaky direction. The second was pure garbage, imo. I haven't bothered with any of the others.
Coscarelli's previous film was Kenny & Company, an OK juvenile comedy. The director was/is obviously enamoured of muscle cars, judging by how often one can be seen squealing away in his flicks.
