Disney's Zootopia - (3/4/16)

Didn't see another thread on this. Mostly posting because I saw the trailer in front of Star Wars and cracked me up. Disney's been on a role lately, hopefully this continues the trend.

In the animal city of Zootopia, a fast-talking fox who's trying to make it big goes on the run when he's framed for a crime he didn't commit. Zootopia's top cop, a self-righteous rabbit, is hot on his tail, but when both become targets of a conspiracy, they're forced to team up and discover even natural enemies can become best friends.

I only enjoyed the sloth bit to a degree. Otherwise... meh. I never heard of it till it came up on SW.

I saw it during 2D Star Wars but not IMAX 3D Star Wars.

Saw the trailer before Star Wars and thought it was hilarious.

I hadn't heard of it before seeing the trailer before Star Wars. It looks hilarious.

Re: Disney's Zootopia - (3/4/16)

I am not a fan of the new animated movies. I did not like any of the Toy Storys really (I did not dislike them either, they just seemed like somewhat boring children's movies to me), and really have kind of stopped watching them, but I thought the trailer was hysterical and it is the first one I am actually interested in seeing in a theater. I want to see Inside Out, but not while it was in the theater.

Not a complete animation hater, Lady and the Tramp is one of my most cherished movies.

Looks like it could be fun but is probably a movie I'd wait to watch on Blu-ray or something.

It has some original cutting edge comedy for the grown ups, DMV jokes, and also something the kids can relate to, DMV jokes. How can it lose?

The trailer was dine and got a great reaction out of the crowd at the SW showing I was at last night.

I won't see it in theaters, though.

Most Pixar movies are like that, they're "fine" but generally kind of flat, people seem to really like them though so who am I to judge. Every once in a while they'll kick you in the feels, like the beginning to Up, but mostly it's that middle of the road "This is pleasant enough I guess." Main reason I find The Incredibles and Ratatouille to be the best of the Pixar flicks is they at least try to break from that formula.

But otherwise I'm an animation lover, just not a big Pixar fan.

I laughed at the sloth thing in the theater, and I rarely laugh at trailers.

I disagree on Pixar, but to each his own. The meh Pixars for me are the Cars films (of course), Brave, and Monsters U. But that does mean more misses than hits in recent years.

Re: Disney's Zootopia - (3/4/16)

I laughed at the sloth at the DMV in the theater, too, and I was struck by the risk of putting that scene at the heart of the trailer. It's pretty much the entire trailer and, by its nature, it really takes its time. Trailers don't often take their time, nor do family/children's films. I need to know more about this one, but the nature of that trailer has me wanting to learn more.

Looks good. Going to take my kids to it over spring break. Disney animation has really taken over for Pixar in terms of quality

Re: Disney's Zootopia - (3/4/16)

A complete home run. Not only is it Disney's cutest film in years, this thing has rich characters and surprisingly relevant and meaningful themes - really mature stuff to be honest. Can start a good dialogue with parents and kids - doesn't feel shoehorned or overly preachy and actually carries some weight (lots of kids movies have a 'lesson' that is either unearned or feather-lite, this is neither). The film has a lot for adults to enjoy with some good pop culture riffs, decent wit and a fun story. It gets a bit dark/scary for young kids at a few spots but overall this is one I'll revisit over the years. 3D presentation was good, some nice depth, no gimmicks and the animation was excellent. Judy Hop and Nick Wilde are a great onscreen duo and Goodwin and Bateman were the perfect choices...and again, so damn cute that even if a lot of it might go over kids heads, Disney is about to make a killing on merch.

I can't recommend this one enough. GO SEE IT. 5/5

Good to hear. The kids have asked about seeing it this weekend. You have me anxious to do so now.

Re: Disney's Zootopia - (3/4/16)

Nice review mdc3000.
I'm actually kind of excited for this one. My daughter just turned 3. We'll be taking her. She enjoyed The Good Dinosaur (even the scarier bits), so I think this will be fine for her. She's obviously not going to 'get it' at her age, but cartoon animals on the big screen? Won't be a problem.

it's amazing that they basically scrapped the plot halfway through the movie to switch the main characters. usually when that happens, you get something like the good dinosaur.

I feel like it's less damning with CG films since the assets already exist and re-rendering isn't the task it used to be (though, no doubt, still expensive and time consuming).

Admittingly you never want a last minute addition of a second director, but this was less of a damning change than The Good Dinosaur had (where the entire movie was essentially scrapped and re-conceptualized).

This movie has grossed $81.4m so far overseas.

Do they show what the characters eat for food in the movie?

"By the creators of Frozen and Big Hero 6!"

Sold!

Trailer proceeds to the sloth scene...

Not so fast. (pun intended) Fucking dreadful every time I see it. It has seriously killed any and all interest in seeing it.

I loved that clip

92-0 now. Critics are raving about it, that should help
