Re: Rank the Star Wars films
Really? While I agree that ROTJ backed off heavily from the full-throated attack of Empire and softened many of the sharp edges, but the throughline of Vader and Luke is far deeper than any theme or storyline in TPM. I think TPM is as far from ROTJ as ROTJ is to Empire. They’re all different in tone.

Re: Rank the Star Wars films
1. The Empire Strikes Back (Every single character in this is the best possible version of their character in the series.)
2. Star Wars (I wouldn't begrudge anyone calling this the best.)
3-5. Return of the Jedi, The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi (I honestly can't separate these three at this point. They all have their pluses and minuses, and are all so different. I think I need to see ep.9 before I can truly evaluate the sequel trilogy.)
6. The Phantom Menace (Still think this is the most watchable/memorable of the prequels.)
7. Revenge of the Sith (The praise some give this is literally unfathomable to me.)
8. Attack of the Clones (I actually like the idea of this movie. It was just so horribly executed.)
N/A Rogue One (I didn't need this movie in my life. I guess it was fine, but it feels like it came off an assembly line. The prequels are infinitely more interesting, even if they're inferior movies.)

Re: Rank the Star Wars films
1. Empire - Everything was spot on with this movie. The story, characters, sets, scenes, etc.
2-4. Return of the Jedi, The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi. I agree with Rocket a couple posts up, I can't separate these yet. They're all amazing
5. Star Wars
6. Revenge of the Sith - I enjoyed this one the most out of the prequels
7. Attack of the Clones - Enjoyed this one a lot in the theaters but hasn't held up in repeat viewings. Following the turd of the Phantom Menace helped a lot when it first came out.
8. Rogue One - Couldn't connect with the characters at all
9. Phantom Menace - What a shame that this is the only movie with Qui-Gon and Darth Maul...that fight scene at the end is still one of my fav's

Last Jedi and Force Awakens are completely neck and neck. I can't decide which one is superior to the other right now. Force Awakens was more consistent, but it was essentially a remake. The Last Jedi had much better character moments and growth, but that flabby midsection was a misstep.
Rogue One was better than both of them.

I can't list them. Couldn't decide on the order. Favorite is TESB though. Least favorite is ATOC by a mile. It's become completely unwatchable to me.

The prequels are damn-near unwatchable and I don't even want to include them (and yes, even The Phantom Menace - Jake Lloyd and Jar Jar destroy that movie. The only thing it has going for it is Darth Maul.)

Figured out why Last Jedi is easily the worst of all the films. For 40 years, the crux of Star Wars, built up in decades of films, TV shows, novels, games, and comics, was that the Force was a binary good versus evil thing, with a select few grand actors on that stage battling for the galaxy. The Last Jedi takes that foundation and nonchalantly tosses it over it's shoulder.

Re: Rank the Star Wars films
But they are making a new trilogy (Rian Johnson is developing it), they are making standalone films, but this is still the Skywalker Saga. That's what people just don't get whether you like the Skywalker Saga or not, or whether you are bored with the family story, Disney chose to make Episode 7,8,9 with Luke, Leia, and Han so right there the movies have to fit with 1-6. If they bought Lucasfilm and decided to make a new trilogy from another era without the OT characters from the start, then you can either jump on board with new stuff or walk away from the Saga. Nobody ever thought the ST would happen as most people thought SW was dead in the context of films in 2005 after ROTS. But Disney was the ones who told Lucas he had to get Carrie, Harrison and Mark back or they don't do the deal for 4 Billion. You can't just bring everyone back, stamp 7,8,9 on it, and then say we don't give a shit about the previous films. Or worse yet, Rian Johnson not giving a shit about the previous film from Episode 7!

Re: Rank the Star Wars films
My list:
Star Wars
Empire Strikes Back
Return of the Jedi
The Last Jedi
The Force Awakens
Rogue One (even though technically not Episode movie)
Revenge of the Sith
Attack of the Clones
Phantom Menace
Original trilogy is just incredible in its order. The new trilogy brings some new and a lot old.
Prequel trilogy is pretty much terrible.

Re: Rank the Star Wars films
The more I think about it, the only SW films I truly enjoy and like re-watching are the ones with Han Solo in them, where the non-Han Solo films are just missing something. I don't know what type of fan that makes me because I have been there since 1977.
Love: Star Wars, Empire, Jedi, The Force Awakens
Don't like: The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, Revenge of the Sith, Rogue One, The Last Jedi

My list:
ESB
Star Wars
The Last Jedi
Return Of The Jedi
Rogue One
The Force Awakens
I have never seen the prequels all the way through, just bits and pieces although I watched the majority of ROTS. That would be under TFA.

Re: Rank the Star Wars films
I'm not sure how I missed this thread all these years.
1. Empire Strikes Back
2. Star Wars
3. The Last Jedi
4. Return of the Jedi
5. The Force Awakens
6. Rogue One
7. Solo
8. Revenge of the Sith
9. Attack of the Clones
10. The Phantom Menace
11. The Clone Wars
I don't know if The Clone Wars really counts. It got a theatrical release, so fine.
Unless something goes immensely wrong (I don't think it will), my guess is Episode IX will be somewhere in the #4-5 slot. I would be thrilled to have a new #1-3 winner, though. Beat Empire Strikes Back, JJ, I triple dog dare you.
