Re: Rank the Star Wars films

I'm still pretty much release order in ranking the films, although many are close enough where they could be swapped a bit. And SW and ESB I'd rate like 9ish on a 10 scale, and all the rest are in the 5-6 range.

Re: Rank the Star Wars films

1. Empire Strikes Back
2. Star Wars (none of this, "A New Hope," crap - it was just Star Wars when it came out, and that's when I first saw it)
3. The Last Jedi
4. The Force Awakens
5. Rogue One
6. Return of the Jedi (the Luke/Yoda/Vader/Emperor stuff was great, the rest just OK)

7. Revenge of the Sith
8. Attack of the Clones
9. The Phantom Menace

Or is it because you personally didn't like TLJ there must be something wrong and there must be a conspiracy?

I know there is a small sample size of 60 votes in the DVDtalk Review thread, but currently, 70% of the votes are 4 stars and above, 15% 3 - 3 1/2 stars and 15% 2 1/2 stars and below. So it does seem like you're in the minority.
Interestingly, Deadline has an article on just this subject:

http://deadline.com/2017/12/star-war...ak-1202228837/

Of course, it takes the opposite tack and theorizes that the unscientific scoring on sites such as Rotten Tomatoes are subject to user manipulation, essentially suggesting a conspiracy on the part of trolls as opposed to critics. So many conspiracies, you'd think we were talking about JFK as opposed to Star Wars.

Re: Rank the Star Wars films

Casual Star Wars fan. I thought The Last Jedi was about as good as big scifi movies get. For comparison, I probably enjoyed it more than most of the Marvel movies. Need more time to think about it. Always looking forward to more Star Wars.

1. The Empire Strikes Back
2. A New Hope
3. The Last Jedi
4. Rogue 1
5. The Force Awakens
6. Return of the Jedi
7. Revenge of the Sith
8. Attack of the Clones
9. The Phantom Menace

Changing mine up after time has gone by on the newer movies. Yeah, I really don't like Rogue One.

Too much Phantom Menace hate here. Anyone watched it recently? It’s easily the best of the prequels.

I'm with you.

The flaws are obvious and have been mentioned many times, but:

- wonderful bright, colorful look and sets, with lots of real location shooting instead of CGI backgrounds.

- Neeson with the screen time instead of Christenson

- Best lightsaber battle of the series, with real stuntwork, not CGI cartoons

- Some of the best music of the series, with Duel of the Fates

- Darth Maul, great secondary villain

- Pod race was fantastic

- ship design, costumes and space battles were excellent

The Phantom Menace was like being on a date with a beautiful woman and realizing with slowly dawning horror that she definitely pooped her pants.

Take out Jar Jar and I could almost overlook the other flaws and consider this a successful and good film. But ultimately, I think that it's reputation suffers because the films that follow it.

Re: Rank the Star Wars films

The best thing about TPM is the teaser trailer. So yeah, out of a 2+ hours there was about 1 minute and 30 seconds worth of quality movie.

You mean because the other two prequels didn't improve things? If so, I agree.

I'm really not a hater of any of the prequels--I find them more frustrating than anything, because they get a lot right. Lucas basically just needed a good editor, both in regards to the screenplays and the films.

Re: Rank the Star Wars films

I find Phantom Menace the most "childish" out of the prequels; not just because of Jar Jar, but along with little Ani things that I used to find fun like the pod race sequence becomes a little too "wacky" to me. It ruins the good parts, namely Neeson/McGregor and Darth Maul.

Please. Darth Maul was a cuck.

The most frustrating thing about the prequels is that Lucas seemingly didn’t realize he had to connect them to the original trilogy until the last 15 minutes of Episode III. He had three fucking movies to pull it all together and in the end we get:
Lucas: “kill off Padme with a broken heart, nevermind the two babies she just gave birth to. We’ll just pretend she had nothing to live for. Yoda? The most badass Jedi ever? We’ll just have him run off like a bitch mid-fight. The droids? Fuck it, throw something in there about wiping their memories...”

That kind of crap all in the last few minutes when he had three films to tell the tale is inexcusable.

Re: Rank the Star Wars films

Yeah, some good points.

For me, the main problem with the prequels was the jarring change of tone, with the kiddie poo-doo, fart jokes, Jar-Jar, cartoon humor. Unlike Lucas, I have first-hand experience: I was nine years old in the summer of '77, and Star Wars was a virtual life-changing movie experience for me at that age. I wanted Star Wars EXACTLY as it was---I didn't want it dumbed down with some misguided notion of what children supposedly wanted.

Re: Rank the Star Wars films

I don’t disagree at all. All the prequels are flawed, but as ki fi said, there are real locations, real sets, some good sequences. II and III were like pure cgi.

I see TPM as far more tonally consistent with it's immediate predecessor (RotJ) than Return Of The Jedi was with it's (ESB).
