Re: Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Abrams, 2015) — The Reviews Thread
Finally saw it last night. J.J. Abrams aped my childhood, and I'm cool with that.
I knew there was a need to have lots of nostalgia nods (like old stories re-told between family members who meet back up after too long apart), and the film was a great bridge connecting the past with where we're going next.
I also liked the Apocalypse Now homage with the Tie Fighters approaching in line with the sun behind them.
My minor nitpicks have pretty much been covered in this thread. One new one - the smuggler gang Mexican standoff scene with Han and Chewie felt like something that would fit better in a Firefly episode than a Star Wars movie.
Look forward to seeing it again.

I'm sure you don't get it. Since you continue to maintain that an opinion that is different than the "majority" is wrong.

I liked that he wasn't a deformed mess ala Darth Vader. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but it drove the point home that he wants to be Darth Vader but it's totally a costume because he doesn't need it.
I went in completely spoiler free (didn't even know Adam Driver was playing Kylo) so it was a "holy shit, he's just a kid" moment for me.

We don't know, and I don't know that it matters, or if it will be explained, but if you have to draw a plausible explanation in your own mind, I don't think it's out of the question that Luke would have kept it after the battle of Endor. And then if Luke had it, and Kylo was his student, it would've been easy for him to take it.

When the wings are spread, don't those engines also separate, leaving two half moon engines per side?

My main complaint is that the fate of Captain Phasma was unecessarily cruel for the "good" guys.

-There was one Chewie crossbow blast that knocks back a storm trooper and shatters the armor -- fcking loved that.
-Daisy Ridley -- more of her, in anything!
-Phasma walking tall and then Chewie's fist entering stage right
- :lighter:
-someone asked how bb8 would get back up the steps -- I say shooting out those cables and reeling / swinging up a la Indiana jones, obviously
-my idea for the final shot:
Luke reaches out
Cut back to Rey with palm open; lightsaber begins to move
Helicopter roundabout shot with saber floating from Rey to Luke
Tight shot of Luke's face; ignites saber partially covering his face like in those posters
End scene

Nah. It's just a stronger shot if they just were to leave it w/ Rey in the back and the saber in hand towards luke. It was a nice emotionally strong shot. But then the helicopter shot ruins it by:
1. Being there at all
2. Being a fucking long awkward shot cuz Rey is... STILL with her hand out.

I thought the last scene worked very well. There was a small part of me, though, that was hoping Rey would say "Luke Skywalker?" To which Luke would respond "Luke Skywalker? Now that's a name I've not heard in a long time."

Looking is one thing. Hand out with saber? Awkward. It was a very long time with her doing that as it is. Also it's just stronger knowing what she's doing and her determination in it.
The helicopter shot was pointless.

There can't be any dialogue in the last scene of a Star Wars movie.

It was mere seconds, and I took the helicopter shot as occurring at the same time as the initial action, and it showed a nice, scenic shot. Not saying you have to like it, but it wasn't pointless.
