It is such a shame that DESPITE the route JJ took, the film has had such a negative spectacular showing at the box office. It makes me wonder if Disney will even bother finishing the trilogy in a more novel fashion, rather than simply redoing "Empire" and "Jedi".

Disney is going to remake Empire for the next one, so in their twist Phasma takes off her mask and says, "Rey, I am your mother..."

Still reading through the entire thread but I'm halfway there. Finally saw the movie this weekend, and I can admit I'm enough of a fanboy to be fine with this continuing on the Star Wars legacy for my kids.
Can't understand the criticism that there's too much coincidence here when A New Hope also had a ton of it.
I can understand the criticism that they "homaged" a bit too much but like I said before, I'm a fanboy, that's fine. It did make some of the movie way too predictable, including the lightsaber in the snow and the scene on the bridge with everyone stopping to watch. If there are At-ats and tow cables to open the next one I'll be disappointed but I'm ok with this one.
Now I want all the toys. Specifically all the Hot Toys. Kylo seems sold out but I'm sure they'll make another. Phasma's forgettable part will actually save me some money.

I seriously would not be surprised if VIII was basically a remake of Empire with Luke teaching Rey the ways of the force basically a jedi master teaching her on a water filled planet. All while the "Resistance" is on the run from the First Order with some silly nonsense about how their hyperdrive not working or powerful enough. Toss in some silliness that they have to turn it off from the inside or something. Mirroring Empire and causing far more nerd rage to explode after a two year wait for a "new" star wars.
I'll be laughing my ass off.

My friend and I were talking about that very thing on Saturday after seeing the movie again (right down to the "baby Ben playfully tugging on the Wookie's fur" moment).

I seriously want Chewie to develop from what he's experienced. I can't imagine him taking that shit lightly even w/ hitting Ren.
I don't think we'll get it but... I'd love to see Chewie actually have some seeded development.

Maybe they can explore this in Episode VIII via Chewie's relationship with Lumpy.

It just follows the pattern of a first part of the trilogy, which is fine. Nobody cried foul when episode 1 followed the pattern:
New hero is fatherless, lives on a desert with no future prospects
Anakin / Luke / Rey
New hero gets a mentor
Qui-Gonn / Obi-Wan / Han
Mentor killed by dark side user dressed in black
Maul / Vader / Ren
New hero helps destroy something big
droid control ship / death star / starkiller base
It's parts 2 & 3 of the trilogies that they veer away from set patterns

If anything, you could say that the last element is different from what went before, since Rey didn't help destroy anything. That was Han, Chewie, Finn, Poe, and an entire squadron of X-Wing pilots (but mostly Han, Chewie, and Poe).

And people call her a Mary Sue. Dumb bitch didn't even use her tits to destroy the Starkiller.
