Nice to see those lower predictions fall.
I want to see it again this weekend and my local theater has a showing at 3:20 am and another at 4 am. I've never seen that before at this place.

I haven't read any of the projections here or in the media, but I wouldn't be surprised if this made a million dollars just today alone. Unreal.

Looks like based on box office estimates so far, my initial guess to the opening weekend will be way off. I didn't think it could break Jurassic World's opening record because of the season (travel and weather)... looks like this is going to break all records now.
Might even do $1billion domestic BO total before it's all done.

don't get why they call Friday opening day or why they would add that to Fridays "opening day". Technically Thursday is opening day not Friday. Also, adding Thursday to the weekend gross is misleading as well.

Just depends on what you're comparing it to. 4-day opening weekends have been common for big movies for awhile now.

It is past midnight in New York and off those figures non-Disney analysts currently see Star Wars: The Force Awakens with an opening day record of $123M en route for an all-time opening of $244.8M.

I like reading Coli's sober assessments and tend to agree with him. I retired recently so I'm not talking to my younger co-workers anymore so I can't judge the buzz for TFA based on their conversations. I'm sure there are many STAR WARS fanboys among them, although they tend to be more excited by superhero movies and TV shows. Putting them aside, I remember the word-of-mouth for the original and how it drove tons of people to the theaters to see SW even if they weren't fans of the genre. Like Coli says, it became a must-see movie. I don't think too many of my peers who went to the original will be going to this one. Granted, we're all a lot older now (and we were adults back then also, just 38 years younger than we are now), so this kind of thing doesn't excite us as much. Like Coli says, it's gotta hit the younger crowd the way the original did in 1977, which seems like a pretty tall order. I, for one, won't be going. I imagine my daughter and nephews will (all born around the time of RETURN OF THE JEDI or after it) and I'll get their reports on it. One of my nephews, in fact, was born after my brother and his wife went to see a reissue of STAR WARS. They went to the hospital right afterwards.
From The New York Times:
Some analysts believe that “The Force Awakens,” the first new “Star Wars” movie in a decade, has a chance of becoming the best-selling movie in history. That record is considered to be held by “Avatar,” which took in roughly $3.1 billion worldwide in 2009, after adjusting for inflation, according to Rentrak, which compiles ticketing data.
Anthony DiClemente, a media analyst with Nomura, wrote in a research note early Friday after seeing the film: “We have incrementally higher conviction that its broad appeal to all audiences will make the film a box-office juggernaut for weeks to come.”

But then, there's this:
Still, some of the hype seemed overblown. Some theaters that scheduled screenings in the wee hours of Friday, supposedly to accommodate demand, saw light attendance.
It was quiet, for instance, at Arclight Cinemas in Santa Monica, Calif., as the sun rose on Friday — no lines, no vigils — although a few sleepy fans were stumbling out of early-morning screenings.

If I go bowling and on my last game and I bowl a 200, I should not add in the last three frames from my previous game so that my score is now 260. But that's what they're doing by adding in Thursdays revenue to Friday's gross for this movie.

You have to admit it's pretty silly that Thurs PM showings are included on Fridays. Looks like about 240-50m opening... higher than I thought! Wkdays maybe 15-20m? Followed by 150m next wknd? (Christmas Day should be huge)
I could see this dropping a fair amount each wk, just due to the volume of up front demand... but I think 700m is a given at this point. It still could come up short of 2B worldwide, which is crazy to think that will be viewed as some kind of failure...

i think this movie deserves to take it's crown above the rest. Avatar was incredible and breathtaking and had its day, but this is Star Wars and it was brilliant!

Star Wars: The Force Awakens has already put its stamp on the record books, kicking off its domestic release with an estimated $120.5 million Friday opening. That opening number includes a record-breaking $57 million from Thursday night "previews" and makes this the first film to gross more than $100 million in a "single" day, but the records don't stop there.
The $120.5 million opening day for Star Wars marks the largest Friday, opening day and single day records previously held by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 at $91 million. In just its opening day, the film has also broken the previous December opening weekend and single day records, both of which were held by The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.
The Hobbit's previous December opening weekend record was $84.62 million and the single day record was a paltry $37.13 million, which puts into context just how big this opening really is. Now the question comes down to the film's legs to determine just how high it will go. The overall opening weekend record of $208.8 million, set by Jurassic World earlier this year, will obviously be broken, but by how much?
Industry estimates currently range anywhere from $225-240 million for the weekend.

As for it being front loaded, I have to think that the movie actually being good and getting rave reviews will help it's lasting power. Especially with people already wanting to go to repeat viewings. I work at a nerdy tech company and had a company showing Friday morning, and there were already people that saw it Thursday night as well or planning to see it again Friday night.
