TFA will open on 4000+ screens, which is what Jurassic World opened on, so it definitely has enough screens to break the record. The exact number of screens is yet to be determined.

Re: Predict Star Wars: The Force Awakens' box office
Currently 90 - 91% of tickets sold on Movietickets and Fandango are Star Wars pre-sale tix. Or something like that.
BoxOfficeMojo currently has it listed at 3900 screens, if that were the case it needs to make about $53,540 per screen to beat Jurassic World. But I'm sure it's more screens than that.
The Avengers opened on 4,349 screens, Avengers 2 on 4,276 screens. The widest release of the year was in 4,301 theaters opening weekend (Minions).
And for comparison's sake, the biggest "Per Theater" average so far this year was Steve Jobs (4 theaters, $130,381 per theater), followed by The Big Short with $88,191 this last weekend.

screenrant saying 4100 screens (though doesn't say where it got the number)
Star Wars 7 Won’t Best Twilight: Eclipse for Widest Theatrical Release
Star Wars 7 Won’t Best Twilight: Eclipse for Widest Theatrical Release
The previous record holder for highest number of screens on opening day was The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, which brought cinema’s most famous love triangle between a human, werewolf, and sparkly vampire to no less than 4,465 theaters. That was back in 2010, and that record has yet to be beat.
According to The Wrap, the Force will not be strong enough with Star Wars 7 to overcome that record. The newest entry in the Star Wars saga will be launching in a comparatively modest 4,100 theaters, a full 365 theaters fewer than were graced with Kristen Stewart’s lovelorn scowls.

I figured it would be on every damn movie screen in the country. Maybe they're trying to drive up the demand with fewer screens. Surely not.

Well, based on the nearly 100 RT scores so far.. this is trending better than anyone imagined... fasten your seat belts...
Looks like a 90+ score, Avatar was at 83... have to believe RT is even bigger now than it was then...

Re: Predict Star Wars: The Force Awakens' box office
I started to notice this during the week as they have not added any shows to my multiplexes as I was only able to get tickets on Friday late afternoon, as most of Thursday, Friday and Saturday Primetime Shows were sold out. It's much different then the PT era as I had no problem ever getting tickets opening weekend, as I bought them an hour before each showtime.

The funny thing is I think the 2nd/3rd weekend will be alot bigger then forecasters expect, as most people I know are waiting a week. There are a few diehard friends like me that are going this weekend, but most co-workers and family members with kids are kind of scared off by the sold out shows so they are either going Christmas Weekend, or New Years weekend, or once schools out they will catch a matinee show during the week.

Re: Predict Star Wars: The Force Awakens' box office
The seventh film in the science-fiction franchise has sold more than $100 million worth of tickets, sources confirmed Tuesday to Variety. Those include showtimes through the New Year, but it is reasonable to assume that many of those tickets are for opening weekend showtimes.
This kind of numbers has box office tracking suggesting that “The Force Awakens” will do more than $200 million worth of business on its opening weekend domestically and could even surpass “Jurassic World’s” $208.4 million debut to establish a new record. Screenings start at 7 p.m. Thursday.
The previous record holder for pre-sales, “The Dark Knight Rises,” did $25 million worth of business in the lead up to its release.

Re: Predict Star Wars: The Force Awakens' box office
I went ahead and bought my ticket for Saturday morning. Our theater usually doesn't have any AM showings with noon as the first shows, but they are making an exception for this. With the combination of people being lazy and sleeping in on the weekend and not realizing the theater is going to be open I figured this will be a lighter showing with less of a struggle to get in and get a decent seat. Of course, my fear is that this could be the screening that will be loaded with crying rugrats.

Re: Predict Star Wars: The Force Awakens' box office
We've had this discussion already on the previous page. Are you sure these are final schedules? It's likely you're only seeing the new releases because those are the only ones they are selling advance tickets for at this time, and haven't firmed up the rest of the schedule. Most theaters around here only had listings for Star Wars until today, because that was the only movie they were selling advance tickets for. The theater I usually attend finalized its schedule today, and they appear to be showing Star Wars on 5 screens, with a regular mix on the other 11 screens.
To answer your other question, they are obligated to show a movie that they book on a dedicated screen for 2 weeks.

Re: Predict Star Wars: The Force Awakens' box office
J.J. Abrams' Star Wars: The Force Awakens doesn't begin rolling out in the U.S. until Thursday night, and already the movie boasts more ticket sales than any title in Fandango's 15-year history.
Put another way, Force Awakens has sold more tickets than Jurassic World and Avengers: Age of Ultron did during their entire runs. The former was Fandango's previous record-holder in terms of most tickets sold.

Re: Predict Star Wars: The Force Awakens' box office
J.J. Abrams' Star Wars: The Force Awakens is headed for a $50 million-$55 million Thursday-night opening at the North American box office, a record number that could climb as high as $60 million by morning.

Re: Predict Star Wars: The Force Awakens' box office
4TH UPDATE WRITETHRU, FRIDAY 2PM: Distribution are in complete awe. They just can’t believe what they’re witnessing hour by hour. After shattering the box office industry’s preview night record with $57 million on Thursday night, Disney’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens set to knock over opening day and weekend records left and right. You can scratch out that $110M opening day we heard about earlier. Force Awakens Friday –which includes that $57M it made in Thursday previews– is between $130M-$145M per industry estimates (not Disney). This puts Force Awakens in an opening weekend range of $250M-$275M; a gross which sends Universal’s Jurassic World opening weekend record of $208.8M back to the stone age.
As we saw with Universal during the opening weekend of Jurassic World, Disney is being very conservative with their estimates. At this point, they see a $100M+ Friday and a $200M+ weekend.
With eye-boggling grosses like this, what could possibly come in second this weekend? Many are betting that 20th Century Fox’s Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip makes an estimated $18M at 3,653 theaters after a Friday that’s between $5.5M-$6M. Universal’s R-rated comedy Sisters with its intent on hooking females, is looking at $6M today for a $17M opening in third place. The film, suffocated by Star Wars, couldn’t bust a $1M in previews last night, settling for $769K. Among holdovers, Lionsgate’s The Hunger Games: Mockingjay-Part 2 will have the benefit of slotting fourth with an estimated -45% decline for a fifth weekend of $6.3M and a running cume of $255.1M. Warner Bros./Village Roadshow’s In the Heart of the Sea will be down 55% in its second sesh with $5.1M and a 10-day cume of $20.2M. As to whether all films in the marketplace will reap from Force Awakens rising tide, we’ll have to wait until we get past Christmas Eve when all holiday distractions cease for moviegoers.
