Holy shit, horror movies do not get box office like this very often. It is a damn juggernaut. Everyone is going to want in on the sequel.

It's going to pass a lot of movies in the next week, including The Exorcist and the Lego Movie. Unreal! I bet Sony is regretting their treatment of Dark Tower.

Bad for Flatliners, but not unexpected, and not very good for Battle of the Sexes considering its expansion.

And getting weaker, they adjusted it down to $32.6M. Wouldn't surprise me if it's close to $30M when actuals come out on Monday.

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

I felt the initial $40m+ estimate was high originally. When you can only advertise visuals and the fact it's a sequel to non-mainstream classic (Ask people what they thought of the original, you'll find a few that loved it, many that thought it was boring and more that never saw it), you run into issues. Hopefully it finds its legs.

Well, with it being the fall and good reviews from critics and audiences, it could just cross $100M, but not sure how much more. Not sure what kind of international roll out it has or interest overseas.

Interesting. I was surprised at the high early tracking. But these results are what I was expecting all along. My guess was always $35mil.

No matter how great the reviews are, it’s probably hard for many people to make time for a nearly 3 hour movie.

That was a point I made in the thread for the movie. Plus 20+ mins of trailers.

Good thing Warner got hits this year with Wonder Woman and It...

As for the movie, I'm interested but that running time is a big turn off. I'd rather watch at home tbh.

I find that funny because you had said to me that the run time wouldn’t deter casual audiences.

I did? Forgot, I just figured based on the reviews, people would show up, apparently not.

Of course, at the same time, I don't go to the theaters that often unless I'm motivated. Hell, I haven't seen It yet.

Shocking for Blade Runner. Estimates from 50+ to now less than 30??? WTF????

I though mid 30's for sure at least what Road Warrior did.

Avatar was a transformative, at least technologically, innovative movie. And Titanic came out 20 years ago when the entertainment landscape was vastly different. And, it was a technologically innovative movie that attracted a wide range of demographics due to the plot. Clearly, the interest just wasn't there.

A better example would be Transformers: Age of Extinction that managed to make $1.1B worldwide ($245M domestically) and was 2-minutes longer. Further, that movie made $100M on its OW, thinking BR2049 will barely get passed that mark.

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

I'd argue BR 2049 was infinitely more transformative than Avatar could ever have aspired, but that's not either here nor there. People will sit for 3 hours in a theater if they want to. Always have.

Of course BR2049 isn't a popcorn crowdpleaser type of movie. It is thrilling, yes, but it is contemplative, methodical, and understated. The Fast & Furious crowd ain't got time for that shit.
