Will Barbie crack the top ten domestically? It should be at #11 by now. If they do a rerelease in December, I guess it's got a shot.

It's getting an IMAX release this weekend too.

What happened to that Taylor Swift concert movie that everyone was talking about a week or three ago? I don't even see it on the chart.

It doesn't come out until the middle of October.

Then why were people talking about it whenever it was people were talking about it yet now they're not? I wouldn't have heard about it at all if there wasn't some on-line chat here or on FB about it.

Tickets went on sale a couple of weeks ago, and Swifites went nuts buying them up.

There was such a rush for tickets that other movies literally changed their release date so it's not the same day. Are you surprised that anything Swift related would get so much attention?

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

It comes out October 13th, which is a Friday the 13th in October which is a shame for Exorcist but they knew they were screwed and moved their movie.

So far the Taylor Swift Concert has pre-sold in excess of $65m worth of tickets and is looking at an up-to $125m opening weekend.

Saw X made about $18M this weekend. For comparison, Spiral, the last Saw movie that came out in 2021, made about $8.7M and was a bust at $40M worldwide total. You could make an argument that people still weren't going to the theaters in 2021 because of COVID. But Spiral was mostly regarded as just another bad Saw movie.

Meanwhile Saw X had a budget of about $13M and is the best reviewed at about 84%, so it should easily turn a profit. I've seen very few bad comments about it. Fans of the series seem to like it.

Was there actually ever a good Saw movie?

Next wknd is going to be very interesting watching how low Marvels will go. Just based on some of the tracking, anything with a 5 in front of it domestically will be fortunate. Worldwide it may be looking at 110-120m, which would likely mean a 250-275m total.

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

Lowest MCU opening ever @$50M

SATURDAY AM UPDATE: The last-minute push for The Marvels with an appearance by star Brie Larson on The Tonight Show and at a theater in NYC post-actors strike have not weekend moved grosses any higher for what is Marvel Studios‘ The Marvels which is seeing a Friday in the vicinity of where we expected it at $21.5M and a weekend opening between $47M-$52M, the lowest ever for Disney‘s Marvel Cinematic Universe. Oh, also, The Marvels gets one of several post-pandemic B CinemaScores from audiences after Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (B+), Thor Love & Thunder (B+), Eternals (B), and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (B). Comscore/Screen Engine PostTrak exits are worse at 3 1/2 stars and a 73% positive.

By all accounts and by all sources, a disastrous result for a $200M Marvel Studios movie. But, wait, didn’t you declare Apple Original Studios’ and Paramount’s $200M Killers of the Flower Moon at $44M a success a few weeks ago? Just sit down, I’ll explain in a bit. The Marvels misfire is about the rusting of a platinum brand that’s in need of some serious –not polishing, rather resurfacing. Months ago, who would of thought that Universal/Blumhouse’s Five Nights at Freddys two weeks ago in a day-and-date debut on Peacock would post a higher opening at the box office ($80M) than The Marvels? It’s interesting to put the two pieces of IP side-by-side because it says something about Universal and Disney’s ability to harness fans around an event.

Looks like Marvels is coming in on the low end at 110m worldwide.(I'd expect actuals to drop a bit Monday) With Hunger Games coming this will get absolutely knee capped, probably finishing with 200-225m.

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

Update: Marvels had a normal Tues uptick but Wed (it's last day on premium screens) it dropped nearly 50% to 1.7m. Now looking at maybe a 10m upcoming wknd - if that happens 100m domestic and 200m worldwide are likely off the table.

It looks like it may just get past the $100 million mark domestically. Maybe now Disney will realize that you just can't make a Marvel movie and they will come. You have to put much more effort in it. The biggest problem is they've already used up just about all of their A-list and B-list characters. the characters they have last are c or d grade characters and they can't get lucky every time like they did with Guardians of the Galaxy.

They still have their takes on Fantastic Four and X-men to come. They have plenty of ammo or rope depending on how you view it.

Marvel will of course continue and achieve relative degrees of success, but the days of guaranteed $1B blockbusters are over.

Yeah, The Fantastic Four and the X-men are the only big guns the MCU hasn't done yet. The only problem is we've had three different movie versions of the Fantastic Four already, if you count the 1994 movie. The last movie really left a bad impression in most people's view. The X-Men has also been done and they've used a lot of the major storylines from the comics in the previous movies.

Marvels now $161 million worldwide after Week 2.
OTOH, Hunger Games had it's worst opening ever at $44 million, the other four had hit triple figures...
