$205m five day for Mario, $20m five day for Air. Both are strong showings.

Bummed D&D didn't hold better but they had to know there would be audience overlap with Mario.

There's only AMC IMAX screen and they're doing this Japanese movie called Suzume next week. Movies usually get only one week on IMAX here. I'll probaly skip the 50 minute round-trip and go to the one 10 minutes away and see something else, maybe D&D.

I believe Mario will end up as one of the year's three highest grossing movies.

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

Interested to see how front heavy Mario will be. Sure there's a lot of pent up demand and fans behind the first week. But I can see it having pretty good legs (I mean he does jump pretty high so they must be pretty good right? ) with people who were maybe on the fence and will check it out now that it's getting such positive buzz. And personally I think it's pretty rewatchable but not sure how much repeat business cartoons get. Either way it'll be interesting to see how much the drop is this second weekend.

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

It should hold up very strongly. I was looking through some comps but since this opened as a 5-day release instead of a 3-day release, and there really isn't much. Plus, the front loading that happens with Thursday night "previews" doesn't get factored in.

As such, this should only drop about 45% for about an $80m 2nd weekend.

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

I'm too busy to see movies I enjoy in the theater twice, even if I want them to do well. I'm tempted to go see Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves again, svem take the whole family yet again. But with limited time, maybe I can just get my A-List ticket and now show up? Will that help?

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

Not sure but I do highly recommend D&D, great flick.

Edit: Deadline is predicting $58m for Mario this weekend. I think this seems low, but we'll see.

Haven't heard of it and I follow movies

A 17% on a sports biopic isn't a great selling point.

There is a thread with trailer on page 1 here.

Maybe some had no idea it was a basketball movie and thought it was a coming of age drama For the most part, movie titles shouldnít be a discouraging factor IMO. Iím a little bit familiar with the story since I know and follow basketball.

I think at least for this forum, a sexy movie title, a known IP and big stars draw interest and discussion. Smaller movies without big stars usually donít generate much interest.

But yes 17% now for Sweetwater is not a good selling point. Money is tight for many. People just cant see everything.

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

I had a ticket reserved for Renfield this weekend, but canceled it. Wasn’t really feeling it to see it right away and interest seems kind of lukewarm judging by the box office.

For some reason I thought that was just a bump of the Matt Damon movie Stillwater. ah well that's what I get for quick skimming.

I read the post which follows yours first and it mentioned Matt Damon. Then I went to your post and until the last sentence I thought you were talking about AIR. I'm thinking that maybe it wasn't a good idea to release another basketball movie right after AIR.

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

Early estimates show the Arthouse "wide" release is still sorta kinda completely dead. But younger and family skewing pics are thriving as well as ever. It's worth noting Evil Dead Rise was intended as a straight to streaming release like Air. If I were a Netflix shareholder I'd probably be irritated at their strong stance against all theatrical windows.

1) Super Mario Bros Movie (Uni) 4,350 theaters (-21), Fri $14M (-38%), 3-day $58M (-37%), Total $434.1M/Wk 3
2) Evil Dead Rise (NL) 3,402 theaters Fri $10.3M, 3-day $23M/Wk 1
3) Guy Ritchie’s Covenant (MGM) 2,611 theaters Fri $2.2M, 3-day $6.1M/Wk 1
4) Air (AMZ) 2,823 theaters (-684) Fri $1.4M (-32%), 3-day $5.46M (-30%), Total $41.1M/Wk 3
5) Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (Par) 2,960 (-364) theaters, Fri $1.39M (-29%), 3-day $5.4M (-30%), Total $82.1M/Wk 4
6) John Wick: Chapter 4 (LG) 2,685 (-348) theaters Fri $1.57M (-25%), 3-day $5.3M (-34%), Total $168.4M/Wk 5
7) Pope’s Exorcist (Sony) 3,178 theaters, Fri $1M (-71%) 3-day $3.3M (-63%)/Total $14.9M/Wk 2
8) Renfield (Uni) 3,378 (+3) theaters, Fri $910K (-68%), 3-day $3.1M (-61%), Total $13.6M/Wk 2
9) Beau Is Afraid (A24) 926 theaters, Fri $1.13M (+701%), 3-day $2.8M (+775%), PTA $3,5K Total $3.2M/Wk 2
10) Suzume (Sony/Crunch) Fri $435K (-80%), 3-day $1.62M (-68%), Total $8.4M/Wk 2
11) Chevalier (Sea) 1,275 theaters, Fri $540K, 3-day $1.5M,/Wk 1

Mario is fucking crushing it, strong hold for Evil Dead Rise. Poor opening for Margaret but the viewer feedback was off the charts high, I wouldn't be surprised if next weekend matched or bettered this weekend. Strong showing from Sisu.

Guardians didn't do amazing numbers but outgrossed Quantumania and got a solid A cinemascore (Quantumania finagled a B) it has however done amazingly well internationally and is currently at $282m worldwide.

The lack of a decent arc is now hurting MCU it appears.

No, it's the lack of decent movies that is hurting the MCU. Dr. Strange, Thor, Ant-Man... All overblown movies that kind of look and feel the same. In the first and 2nd phases the MCU movies all had their own things going on. Different styles, moods, looks, etc. And the stories were smaller scale, allowing for actual characterization and character growth.

Since Endgame most of Marvel's movies have been samey. Big and overblown for no reason other than, clearly, Feige thinks that after the last two Avengers movies (and the 3rd Captain America movie) that fans won't accept anything less than huge spectacle anymore. He's wrong, to the detriment of the MCU.
