Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

Ouch...per Deadline estimates are coming in at maybe 105-115 million over the weekend, and they are comparing its performance to Justice League. Way to rub salt in the wound guys and poor JL which cannot catch a break.

I am still eager to watch and will buy my ticket tonight. If the good seats are sold out for my preferred Sat morning showing I still have not seen Deadpool 2 so either way I will see a film tomorrow morning.

ETA: I was typing my post out as The Movieman was hitting post.

And now Disney is throwing out the $105-115M number. Also makes sense why LucasFilm released the story about Boba Fett movie.

I love that a 4 day $105 - $115m opening is considered an ouch these days.

Well, an ouch for the Star Wars franchise and probably for any movie that originally had estimates at $130 - 150 million for the 4 day.

Also, it had a (rumored) $250M+ budget (+ advertising).

The news is grim overseas, where Solo is launching in most points around the globe timed to its U.S. launch, including China. The movie took in a dismal $11.4 million from its first 43 markets on Wednesday and Thursday. Disney hasn't yet provided numbers from China, but box-office sources there show the movie opening to roughly $3 million on Friday for a possible weekend debut in the $10 million range.

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

Not a big surprise, China and Star Wars aren't a thing. Last Jedi grossed like $42m there.

The fact this is based on an OT character that most people aren't familiar with won't help. The adverts didn't exactly sell a story.

It's doing poorly stateside, now at an estimated $101m for the 4 day.

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

I'm hoping this will open Disney's eyes as to the overkill they're inflicting on their SW properties. They need to tone it back quite a bit. Wouldn't have hurt at all for them to release a film every 2 years, maybe the trilogy first, then Rogue One and the "A Star Wars Story" movies after.. And I really hope they nix stuff like the Boba Fett movie and whatnot.

And maybe spend some time writing better stories and scripts for those movies.

Kinda surprised at Deadpool's drop.

The $100m+ figure for Solo is for the 4-day.

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

Disney’s Solo: A Star Wars Story is now sinking well below its $130M projection with Disney now reporting the pic’s three-day at $83.3M

The Solo stateside B.O. experience is reminiscent of Justice League, another fan movie that many had high hopes for heading into its weekend, only to see the film collapse. In fact, Solo is coming in well under Justice League‘s $93.8M 3-day

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

Don't feel too bad for Disney. The flip side for them is Infinity War is 95M away from the 2B mark AND they have a long awaited Pixar movie coming out on June 15th. Their current competition, DP2, seems to be sputtering out quicker than anticipated.

I do hope everything that has happened during the last six months, from The Last Jedi reactions to Solo, becomes a good learning experience for them going forward.

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

https://screenrant.com/solo-movie-bu...ost-star-wars/

Solo is estimated to be the most expensive Star Wars movie ever.

A New Hope - $11 million (adjusted: $45.7 million)
The Empire Strikes Back - $18 million (adjusted: $55.13 million)
The Return of the Jedi - $32.5 million (adjusted: $82.08 million)
The Revenge of the Sith - $113 million (adjusted: $145.64 million)
The Attack of the Clones - $115 million (adjusted: $160.25 million)
The Phantom Menace - $115 million (adjusted: $173.36 million)
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story - $200 million (adjusted: $207.55 million)
The Last Jedi - $200-220 million (adjusted: $203.26-223.59 million)
The Force Awakens - $245 million (adjusted: $259.52 million)
Solo: A Star Wars Story - $250+ million
So with marketing costs, you're probably looking at what $400M spent on it? Wow, this needs to make a shit load from overseas to just break even.

And it's not doing too well overseas. Something like $65M this opening weekend?

Wouldn't Solo have done better with a December release? Disney should have took in consideration Deadpool 2 and Avengers: Infinity War would be cutting in to Solo's target audience.

Disney has Mary Poppins in December. Even August would have been better, but Disney has Christopher Robin then.

I don't know where they got these budget numbers, but "The Empire Strikes Back" cost a lot more than $18 million to make.

I think $18 million was just the original budget for it, but it went way over budget and although I've never seen an exact total, it ended up costing somewhere between $23 million and $33 million to make (not much today, but a lot back then). It's the main reason George Lucas doesn't like TESB that much because he had to scrounge around, desperately trying to get loaned more money to complete the film. The experience of doing really stressed him out and if the movie flopped (sequels were not considered guaranteed hits back then), he would've lost everything.

Curios what kind of legs this will have. Most of my buddies that really like Star Wars all really liked it. Also seemed like the crowd when we saw it on Saturday laughed and cheered quite a bit.

Probably. Though theaters wouldn't carry it if it wasn't making $$.
