And if you can just make anyone the face of a Franchise why have none of the other Dystopian YA Best selling novels never come close to Hunger Games popularity

What’s the prediction on Wrinkle in Time? Not a critical darling at all and will it appeal to little kids? I personally thought the trailer was cool...

From Box Office Guru:
Do these numbers qualify them all as flops?
Jennifer Lawrence witnessed a 52% decline during the second weekend of release of her latest action movie Red Sparrow. The Fox title did an estimated $8.2M and boosted its cume to $31.1M.
The Bruce Willis action remake Death Wish fell 49% in its sophomore session to an estimated $6.6M giving MGM $23.9M to date.
Paramount's sci-fi entry Annihilation dropped 44% in its third frame to an estimated $3.2M lifting the total to $26.1M.

Well it'll be hard for them to make a whole lot more. Not one of these has had any good word of mouth to keep them going. So now it's up to Tomb Raider and maybe Pacific Rim to try and dethrone Black Panther. My guess is that Tomb Raider will do a little better than Wrinkle in Time. Guess we'll see.
I also hope Roth ends up doing a life term directing one off's on El Rey.

Looks like Tomb Raider is bested by Black Panther. I doubt TR will break even on its budget, at least domestically. I’m guessing it’ll fare better overseas - maybe.

Box Office: ‘Black Panther’ Rules ‘Tomb Raider’ to Claim Fifth Top Weekend
Disney-Marvel’s “Black Panther” will score a rare fifth weekend at the top of the domestic box office with $27 million from 3,834 locations, beating out Warner Bros.’ “Tomb Raider,” which will open with about $22 million from 3,854 sites.
“Black Panther” has continued to break records across the box office, having brought in $585 million domestically in its first 29 days. This weekend’s take will represent the fourth-highest fifth weekend of all time, and the first time a film has held the top spot for five weekends in a row since 2009’s “Avatar,” which dominated for a total of seven weeks.
“Tomb Raider,” a reboot of the Lara Croft franchise and starring Alicia Vikander, took in $2.1 million Thursday for a Friday total of $9 million. The current prediction is just under early tracking, which placed the action film’s opening between $23 and $25 million. As of Friday, the film has earned $45.6 million internationally, for a worldwide total of $54.6 million.

Black Panther is about a week or so away from passing the US gross of The Last Jedi. That's a pretty amazing feat.
Jumanji is less than 3 million away from becoming Sony's biggest hit ever.

Weekend Estimates for 3/16 - 3/18/18:
Jumanji cracked $400m, BP cracked $600m. The Shape of Water is now Del Toro's 2nd highest grossing movie worldwide (behind Pacific Rim), and for those curious, Gringo's 76.9% drop is the 25th worst 2nd weekend drop - sandwiched between From Justin to Kelly (77% drop) and In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale (76.8% drop)

I CAN ONLY IMAGINE came in at #3. Never heard of it. Don't make me look it up, I can only imagine what I'll find. Can someone give me a one-line description that softens the blow? Thanks.

Faith-based movie about a popular Christian Rock song by the same title. Father/Son stuff.

I’m happy Death Wish will make its budget back, worldwide grosses, plus home video releases will help it be profitable.

Do churches just bus their congregants in for a special night out activity? I think they might.

From Box Office Guru:
Shattering expectations to become the third most popular movie nationwide this weekend was the faith-based hit I Can Only Imagine which debuted to an estimated $17.1M despite playing in the fewest theaters of any movie in the top ten. The PG-rated film averaged a stellar $10,476 from 1,629 locations and posted by far the best per-theater average of any wide release this weekend. Released by Lionsgate and Roadside Attractions, Imagine played to an audience that was 67% female and 80% over 35. With a glowing A+ grade from CinemaScore plus the Easter holiday coming up soon, this uplifting film is looking at a promising - and profitable - road ahead.

A friend of mine writes a weekly blog about box office predictions/results that might interest people here. As former President of Distribution at Sony Pictures, its a bit of an insider's take, but still makes for pretty interesting (and lighthearted) reading.

The real secret weapon, revealed
The movie also garnered a very respectable 80 RT score and an A+ Cinemascore. Who knew Cloris Leachman was this popular?

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread
Yeah, the Cloris Leachman comment was actually a callback to the previous week's column:
"This is the first film in recent memory (or long term memory for that matter) where the lead actor’s IMDB page doesn’t include a photo of him. Note to Mr. Finley’s agent, spring for a head shot. Co-star Dennis Quaid has to be wondering WTH happened to his career and we won’t even mention the film’s other co-star Cloris Leachman other than to say she played the Granny character in the film version of “The Beverly Hillbillies”. And that was 26 years ago."
