SATURDAY AM UPDATE: Disney and Marvel's Black Panther brought in an estimated $28.8 million on Friday and current estimates are anticipating a second weekend around $102-104 million, which would put the film's domestic total right around $395 million if those estimates hold true.

Among the weekend's new releases, WB's release of New Line's Game Night brought in an estimated $5.6 million with the film looking at a three-day opening around $15 million. The film received a "B+" CinemaScore from opening day audiences.

Paramount's Annihilation brought in an estimated $3.8 million and is expected to finish the weekend with $10.5 million. The film received an unfortunate "C" CinemaScore from opening day audiences.

Finally, Orion's Every Day brought in an estimated $1.06 million on Friday and is expected to finish the weekend around $3 million. The film received a "B+" CinemaScore from opening day audiences.
Damn, Black Panther has already made more then the first Iron Man and even Thor: Raganrok in less then 2 weeks.

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

http://www.boxofficemojo.com/news/?id=4374&p=.htm

Disney and Marvel's Black Panther continued its box office domination this weekend, becoming only the fourth film to ever deliver over $100 million in its second weekend as well as joining Jurassic World as the second fastest film to top $400 million domestically. Meanwhile, the weekend's new wide releases finished mostly as expected with WB's release of New Line's Game Night leading the way with a second place finish while Paramount's Annihilation landed in fourth and Orion's Every Day finished within the top ten.

With an estimated $108 million, Black Panther delivered the second largest second weekend of all-time, improving on Jurassic World's $106.5 million second weekend back in June 2015. Black Panther's domestic gross now stands at $400 million, which places it alongside Jurassic World as the second fastest film to top $400 million domestically. However, given the way Black Panther has been outperforming estimates since release, don't be surprised to see these domestic numbers climb once actuals come in on Monday afternoon.

So far, Black Panther is already the fifth highest grossing title domestically in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and will shortly pass both Captain America: Civil War ($408m) and Iron Man 3 ($409m). The film is also now one of the top 30 domestic releases of all-time after just ten days of release.
Damn impressive.

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

so given the number thus far, will this be the highest grossing MCU of all time or won't touch Avengers? at least be #2? actually looking at Avengers domestic ($623m), BP should hit it in weeks, no?

Some are saying it has a change to get to Avengers #'s, but that's quite a bit to go left.

Depends on the trajectory, but it's definitely very possible. It's currently up about $17m from Avengers which took about 9 weeks to hit $600m but also didn't have a $40m Monday/Holiday the week it opened.

It's kinda crazy that Black Panther will pass Wonder Woman in a few more days, less than two full weeks in theaters.

Would be wild if this did better than Infinity War. Doubtful, but who knows. It'll be interesting to see how that does coming so soon after this.

Jumanji is knocking at $400m, Black Panther is absolutely killing it, and Annihilation didn't fall as much as I would have thought given the mixed word -- not a hit by any means, but still a reasonable hold.

Highest grossing 3rd weekend (non-holiday)

Avatar and Force Awakens have overalls locked down still, but since they had a winter break release schedule it's a skewed comparison.

I'm going on a trip at the end of this month, so I hope to see BP before I leave. I've been waiting for the hype to die down before I go, but it doesn't appear to be doing so.

I thought Peter Rabbit was going to bomb hard and here it is, quietly getting ready to cross $100 million.

I thought Peter Rabbit was cute and not bad of a movie, but probably one of those things where there really aren't any other kids movies out right now.

That's tied for her largest non-franchise opening.

American Hustle did have two higher grossing weekends when it went wide, though. $19m & $18m.

Star power alone won't bring crowds to most unknown movies, but can help carry a known property over the top.

I heard her on the WTF podcast last week and she was really hoping this movie would Open big.. the cost of the movie vs the opening, I guess it will break even... at some point.. I don't know if she can be happy with that #. $69 Million dollar movie is one of the most expensive on the board, whats the point of that budget if it can't Open?

Phantom Thread made $825 per theater last week during the big push for the Oscar week.. wow, barely clearing $20Mill, wonder how much that cost to make?

Thanks. I was just wondering, I heard Lawrence talk about not making it through 5 mins of Phantom thread so that's why I brought it up.
