Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

They've largely done away with midnight screenings, which used to count in the following day's grosses because it was technically opening day. The studios have replaced midnight screenings with starting the movie as early as 6 or 7 the night before. My guess is that they only did that with the understanding that it would continue to count toward the opening day gross (and in the case of Friday openings, the weekend gross), and they get away with it because they didn't screen it for a full day on the day before release.

Of course, it could also end up coming in 5th, not a huge span as Transformers, Cars 3 and Wonder Woman are all looking at roughly the same mid-to-high teens weekend gross.

Apparently Hollywood is watching it closely for a few reasons. One is apparently it's just well liked among movie executives. Two, it's a $34m budgeted, R-rated, non-franchise, original movie opening in a sea of tentpoles. Sort of a social experiment/study on seeing how it performs.
You could almost say the same thing about Nice Guys last year...

As long as its not front loaded, meaning it branches outside of Edgar Wright fans, it should have nice legs given the reviews.

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

Looks like China finally woke up.

Transformers: The Last Knight is having the same impact this week, but for all the wrong reasons. Its 82.2 percent plunge today from the previous Friday’s $54 million opening (including midnight grosses) to just $8.5 million (RMB 58 million) today is the most spectacular Friday-to-Friday drop I can recall for a wide release in China.

Worst title since "Edge of Tomorrow" - it's no doubt keeping the average moviegoer away.

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

I thought that too initially, but it's doing really well for itself so far and the title being a Simon and Garfunkel song title makes sense.

I agree the title Baby Driver is a horrible name for a movie.

First time I saw the title, thought it was another animated movie like Boss Baby.

Very well under. Even poorly received animated movies tend to have legs. Curious how much effect Saturday being a major traveling day for many had on it.

True. For w/e reason I thought Cars 3 dropped over 60% in its second weekend. So I'll amend it to Over/Under 55% drop for DM3.

Updated. They missed 47 Meters Down which fell only 33.9%. Quite the run.

Let's be honest, the film had no star to sell it, so it really kept away no one based on its decent opening weekend/5 day numbers.
