Mercenaries got a full 3.7 on IMDB. Not even bad in a fun kind of way, just plain bad I guess.

Segal is known for his fast smacking hands. He was never agile in his movies so the fat he's sporting now does not get in the way.

"The surprising thing is that we drew as many women as we did," said Lionsgate executive VP of distribution David Spitz, noting that "Expendables" drew an audience that was 39 percent female. By comparison, Stallone's "Rambo" in 2008 skewed only 27 percent female. -

https://www.thewrap.com/big-35m-expe....Q8JKWcZh.dpuf

Glancing at the next two films, it dipped to 37% female. Expendables movies aren't drawing in Julia Roberts audiences, but without the female audience the Expendables series would be hurting,

I could have sworn I read somewhere that Stallone said it was a mistake to make Part 3 a PG-13 movie.

The entire movie leaking online didn't really help it's box office either.

Have you ever seen SO CLOSE? It's not a sexy movie by any means. It's a no-nonsense HK action film with a high-tech theme that just happens to star three no-nonsense women. And I believe that the three Hollywood actresses I mentioned are the closest American equivalents right now and would knock such a movie out of the park.

Bullshit. I took my mom and fiancee to EX3 and they enjoyed it. Shit, my fiancee watches as many action movies as I do.

I enjoyed a lot of it, but the new team angle really didn't work. And Snipes should've been used more. You don't need a new team when you're adding Snipes to the one you got!

Gibson was awesome in it. It was fun seeing Ford up there with all of my heroes, though he didn't do much, of course.

The biggest flaw in these movies is that Stallone's character sucks. I'm a big Stallone fan, but he does.

If you want to get brutal about it. They don't promote any imagination in execution. They just exist to exist and it's just a waste of time. The concept is fun and could work... but it fails. It just runs as a tired set of films.

There are inklings of stuff to add an actual soul to them but they don't really go that way to give the characters a life to them. They're just action figures moving around and the imagination to move them around is just lacking.

The thing that a lot of people forget is some of those great action films we grew up with? They were actually good movies. Not just being successful in giving out w/ the genre makes it but also had people actually give a damn to make an all around good movie.

I think that there's a certain horror on the part of every person says "I want to work in the film industry" when they realize that that's the kind of job they'll probably end up with.

A few things bum me out. First, as a huge fight fan, I think the film squanders the chance of having so many cool martial artists and rarely seeing them throw down. Second, why not have more fun with the actual cast? I get that it's a huge ensemble and that there's only so much room for everyone. I understand that. But why not give the characters at least more superficial personalities? There's a long tradition in ensemble heist and action movies of using archetypes. I'm not asking for Shakespearean characterization here. Broad strokes are totally fine. One guy is good with computers, one is stoic, one talks a lot, one guy is good with knives, one is a martial artist, one is southern, one is a loner, one is folksy, etc. They play with this a little bit, but why not have more fun with it?

I kind of wonder about this. I don't dispute that it's bad for box office for a movie to get leaked online by any means, but I wonder who outside of the kinds of people who download movies and like talking about them anyway are really interested in watching bootleg quality copies of stuff? People like us who snipe about everything online are probably too small a portion of the population for anyone to care about, least of all executives spending hundreds of millions on movies. Hell, how many times have people speculated about leaks being publicity? I'm not saying it should happen or is harmless, but I wonder if it's as big a box office dent as is sometimes suggested.

I believe it has some impact. I know I have some friends who will download films instead of seeing them in theaters or waiting for bluray. Who don't care about the video quality and just want to watch. Especially with how easy popcorn time makes it.

This is the perfect way to sum up these movies. The great action movies had great stories behind them. This series has nothing when it comes to great story or characterization.

Yup, stuff like Die Hard, T2, The Road Warrior, Hard Boiled, Predator & Lethal Weapon just to name a few had writers and directors who were good at what they did.
IMO the best action filmmaker right now who does his best to put out a quality film is Johnnie To.

There is an excellent documentary on the Blu Ray for the first film, and it basically showed Stallone making up the script as he went along--the actors would get their pages each day, and some of them were pretty frustrated with it. I am sure that Stallone had a general idea of the story or they wouldn't have had sets ready and so forth, but he would've been better off paying more attention to the script beforehand instead of winging it so much.

Granted, I want to say The Lord of the Rings was done basically the same way, with constant revisions, but in those cases, obviously the greater story was all there.

Solid Snake 10-15-15 10:36 AM

re: Expend4bles (The Expendables 4) (2023, D: S. Waugh)

Yeah. That Expendables doc is an excellent one. It's better than any of the films.

I'm excited for Predator via Shane Black? Why? The guy actually cares about story. And he likes action too. Also.... Christmas w/ a Predator!!!! WOOOOOO!

Edgar Wright aside from his comedic nature, knows how to set up a story w/ action.

James Cameron did the same thing for a while there. Now he still does good action in his epic nonsense, Titanic and Avatar, but the stories did lack.

George Miller w/ his Mad Max films. Granted... I can't totally blame him for MM3 cuz there were issues that affected him and I understand that. So free pass. Otherwise.. the guy rocks his direction for that work. And I'm game for MM5.

A great handful of Korean directors do the same thing.

People just love these Expendables films cuz it's bringing these people they like. That's fine and all but c'mon. Stop supporting shit films. We're on a decline of great action and why support the crap?

Why So Blu? 10-15-15 10:38 AM
