Re: Mary Poppins Returns (12/25/18, D: Rob Marshall) S: Emily Blunt, Lin-Manuel Mira

In Disney’s “Mary Poppins Returns,” an all new original musical and sequel, Mary Poppins is back to help the next generation of the Banks family find the joy and wonder missing in their lives following a personal loss. Emily Blunt stars as the practically-perfect nanny with unique magical skills who can turn any ordinary task into an unforgettable, fantastic adventure and Lin-Manuel Miranda plays her friend Jack, an optimistic street lamplighter who helps bring light—and life—to the streets of London.

“Mary Poppins Returns” is directed by Rob Marshall. The screenplay is by David Magee and the screen story is by Magee & Rob Marshall & John DeLuca based upon the Mary Poppins Stories by PL Travers. The producers are John DeLuca, p.g.a., Rob Marshall, p.g.a. and Marc Platt, p.g.a. with Callum McDougall serving as executive producer. The music score is by Marc Shaiman and the film features all new original songs with music by Shaiman and lyrics by Scott Wittman and Shaiman. The film also stars Ben Whishaw as Michael Banks; Emily Mortimer as Jane Banks; Julie Walters as the Banks’ housekeeper Ellen; Pixie Davies, Nathanael Saleh and introducing Joel Dawson as the Banks’ children, with Colin Firth as Fidelity Fiduciary Bank’s William Weatherall Wilkins; and Meryl Streep as Mary’s eccentric cousin, Topsy. Angela Lansbury appears as the Balloon Lady, a treasured character from the PL Travers books and Dick Van Dyke is Mr. Dawes, Jr., the retired chairman of the bank now run by Firth’s character.

Was there a Julie Andrews cameo planned?

^ Yes, but Andrews declined because she thought doing a cameo might be a distraction for the audience. She wants this to be Emily's movie.

There is an absolute shit load of movies coming out the same time period as Mary Poppins.

It would not surprise me at all that Mary Poppins becomes the big winner out of all of them. This is the kind of movie that will probably resonate with families and bring the masses, especially for the Holidays.

But half the cast of Mamma Mia isn't?

Yeah, it does look solid. Wonder how the songs are. Bet Lin-Manuel is gunning hard for a Best Original Song one to complete an EGOT.

I think she is overthinking it, but if that's how she feels, that's fine. It's awesome that Dick Van Dyke is in it again.

It looks like a remake dressed up as a sequel. “It’s 50 years later and we are going to repeat everything we did back then”.

It’s cool that they recreated the street and other sets.

I loved the fact that they chose to use old-school hand-drawn 2D animation.

"You know that kid from the original movie? Well, he's grown up now, but he's an asshole. It's time for your favorite character to return and remind him to never lose his childlike wonder."

Mary Poppins seems a bit soon after Christopher Robin. At a base level, it's the same story from the same studio.

Sequels made decades after the original are just not a good idea.

I can think of several that were a great idea. "Mad Max Fury Road", "Blade Runner 2049", "The Color of Money", "The Godfather Part III", "Rocky Balboa" and "Trainspotting 2 all come to mind.

Shire's been great in everything else I've seen her in though. Including "III".

Re: Mary Poppins Returns (12/25/18, D: Rob Marshall) S: Emily Blunt, Lin-Manuel Mira

I listened to the soundtrack yesterday. Not too shabby, but it's clear they went full on "Force Awakens" and just did a thinly disguised remake masquerading as a sequel. It was easy to identify what each new song was paying homage to:

Spoiler:
(Underneath the) Lovely London Sky - Chim Chim Cher-ee
Can You Imagine That? - A Spoonful of Sugar
The Royal Doulton Music Hall - Jolly Holiday
A Cover is Not the Book - Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious
The Place Where the Lost Things Go - Feed the Birds
Turning Turtle - I Love to Laugh
Trip a Little Light Fantastic - Step in Time
Nowhere to Go But Up - Let's Go Fly a Kite
Blunt does her best to recreate the same cadence Andrews used for the character (in both speaking and singing). Maybe she could have toned it down in a few places, but I was pleasantly surprised with how well she seems to have recreated the character.

I hope this is good but Rob Marshall’s involvement makes me worried that this will be a decent hit, will be jizzed all over during award season, and ultimately leave me feeling disappointed and empty once I see it.

Re: Mary Poppins Returns (12/25/18, D: Rob Marshall) S: Emily Blunt, Lin-Manuel Mira

Just got back from a night show. I enjoyed it. It’s not the best family movie & musical I’ve seen, but it was very enjoyable. I thought it was a nice throwback to the old Disney movies of the 60s and 70s. They also did a good job integrating 2D animation into it which made it feel like a throwback film. I felt like it also paid a nice tribute to the original movie.

Blunt was delightful as Mary Poppins. Beautiful voice and she really nailed the prim and proper persona of her.

Overall I’d give it between a B and B+

I don’t think this movie has much replay value, but it was a nice movie to see this Holiday season.

Saw this today. Bit above average movie. Could have been very good if all the songs weren’t junk. I can’t remember one song from the movie.

Very disappointed by this. Neither I or my friend who likes musicals liked this. It tries way too hard to make you love it that I wound up kinda disliking it. And the songs and score are just bland. I can't fault the actors, but it just wants so badly to imitate the original that it can't break out of the original's shadow. A damn shame.

Lin-Manuel Miranda is such a turnoff for me. There's just something about his schmucky screen presence that I simply can't stand. It'll take a lot to get me into the theaters to see this. Which is a shame, because I love both the original and Emily Blunt.
