I've heard the performances are good but the film is overall forgettable. I still wouldn't mind seeing this at some point though.

A couple of folks I know say the same. Depp is great but the flick sucks.

I'm still seeing it, though.

I don't get out to the theater much any more but I'll certainly rent this when it comes out. It may not be Goodfellas but I'm hoping for an entertaining gangster flick.

I still maintain that the title sucks. It fits more with a sci-fi thriller than a mob movie. When this movie fails at the B.O. I'll blame the title, at least partially.

Looks like this will most likely get a Best Actor nod for Depp but little else. If that's the only nom. for the movie then he most likely won't win. I think this might be the year of Fassbender.

Depp and Edgerton are both great in this - yes the movie isn't perfect and is NOT an instant classic but we've had such a shortage of great gangster movies lately that I was just jazzed to see a decent crime picture. Not perfect but entertaining as hell - best scene by far is the family recipe scene, wish there were more like that in the film.

Nice to see Depp finally not have a dud. The guy's track record is almost as bad as Adam Sandler.

I'm sure the filmmakers weren't trying to make a mind numbingly boring film about the banality of evil, but that's what Black Mass is.

Normally when a new person joins to comment on a new release it's a plant, do we have a name for the polar opposite of that?

Saw it. Acting was great, but as said... the movie isn't very memorable. The story approach is very broad. I think I learned more of Bulger was from the Whitey documentary. Not bad, just not as great as the trailer looked to me.

Depp is f'n creepy and I loved it. Wish there was more of Cumberbatch in this film, but makes sense as to why that was the case. I found the movie memorable just because of Depp's acting and some of the more intense kill scenes (or even when Depp was talking to the wife of the FBI agent). To me, it is def worth the watch.

Hrmmm. I kind of sort of want to watch it but this Vice interview attracts me to watch it. More than previously. I wish Friedkin directed this now cuz the way he talks about that world interests me so much now. Damnit. What's Friedkin's next film?

Re: Black Mass (Cooper, 2015) — The Reviews Thread

Saw it tonight and it was just okay. I didn't feel a lot of attachment to any of the characters really other than Bulger which I get that the film was focusing on him but I think better films in the genre such as Goodfellas have stronger supporting characters that make them more entertaining overall. Depp was great and creepy as hell but the other characters in this weren't all that interesting or likable. The film was well made and well acted but I just wasn't that into it. Overall I agree with the comments I read prior to seeing the film that it's fairly forgettable. I think it was worth watching once but I don't see myself revisiting it.

Re: Black Mass (Cooper, 2015) — The Reviews Thread

Saw it yesterday. Classic case of a somewhat mediocre movie boosted by great performances. Depp and Edgerton were both superb and I hope an acting and supporting acting nod is in the cards for both. It was a relief to see Depp actually showing what a great actor he is as opposed to doing the quirky character schtick for the umpteenth time. That said, the movie's major weakness is a lack of empathetic characters. I sure as hell didn't feel any sympathy for Bulger or Connolly. The only one I found somewhat likeable was Bulger's brother played by Cumberbatch. Overall, it was good, but not great.

Joel Edgerton stole the film. Average movie with above average performances, for sure. I'm glad though that the characters weren't likable; these were murderers and thugs.

I liked this film more than it deserves, probably because I lived in Boston (Southie) in the late 80's-early 90s and remember the news about some of the events depicted.

I thought Depp was terrific in this role.

Re: Black Mass (Cooper, 2015) — The Reviews Thread

A well acted bleak film that focuses more on mood and telling a story than delving deep within its characters.
Johnny Depp hasn't been this good in almost 20 years. This just might be his greatest acting performance.
He will be remembered during Oscar season.

4/5

I thought the film was awesome but think Depp should get an Oscar.

Surprised some people didn't think this was that good of a film. Obviously, Depp is just all kinds of awesome on this. Cannot get over how good he was. I never once thought I was watching Johnny Depp.

The movie itself isn't great or anything, but it's certainly good. I'd watch it again.

Re: Black Mass (Cooper, 2015) — The Reviews Thread

This is the first movie in awhile that I fell asleep watching not once, but twice. From what I saw, Depp was good but the movie was slow and boring. Not sure how you could make a gangster movie boring, but they did a great job here.
