Davis (Jake Gyllenhaal), a successful investment banker, struggles after losing his wife in a tragic car crash. Despite pressure from his father in law Phil (Chris Cooper) to pull it together, Davis continues to unravel. What starts as a complaint letter to a vending machine company turns into a series of letters revealing startling personal admissions. Davis’ letters catch the attention of customer service rep Karen (Naomi Watts) and, amidst emotional and financial burdens of her own, the two form an unlikely connection. With the help of Karen and her son Chris (Judah Lewis), Davis starts to rebuild, beginning with the demolition of the life he once knew.
DEMOLITION opens in select theaters on April 8, 2016.

Jean-Marc Vallee is good at getting the most from his actors but I found both Dallas Buyers Club and Wild underwhelming. Maybe this will be better since it is not a biopic.

Opening here in DC this evening. Alas, rocking a 44% RT score. I have a feeling that this quote from Peter Travers' review probably sums things up pretty well:
Director Jean-Marc Vallee keeps pounding the point that Gyllenhaal's character must destroy his old self to build a new one. It would be funny if it wasn't so profoundly unprofound.

Gyllenhaal does good work in this. The script is close to great, but it's not quite there, needed some tightening and it's redundant. Nonetheless, Gyllenhaal is in total command of his craft, and that alone is worth watching.

Movie is really heavy handed, but I found it enjoyable. I liked the off kilter energy it had and the rhythm it sustained for most of the runtime.

I saw this in the theatre when it came out. I'd agree your statement. I enjoyed it, it was most definitely heavy handed, and somewhat forgettable. All the performances were really good. I find it a shame that lately Gyllenhaal keeps giving great performances that fly under the radar. I saw him in a play last year with Ruth Wilson and they were both so good.

Saw this last night and really enjoyed it. I agree that the message is a bit heavy-handed, but I never felt like that overshadowed the characters and their interactions.
I loved that Davis and Karen's relationship wasn't romantic, and I thought his interactions with Chris (the kid) were wonderful.
I totally get why people didn't like it, but I think I loved it.
