Re: Movies that feature actual comic books

Trailers are great for comic book spotting. Three or four of the examples I've found were because I saw the comics in the trailer.

I haven't seen that one either, but here's a slightly better screenshot from my copy of the movie.

It looks like the comic is in two scenes in the movie. You only see the cover in the first one.

Here's what I've seen recently. Neither one was worth bumping the thread.

Spoiler:
In War Dog (1987), a copy of what appears to be Green Lantern #181 is onscreen for less than a second.

Early in Scared Stiff (Treasure of Fear) (1945), this kid is reading a comic book on the bus and the dialogue says it's Dick Tracy, but who knows what it really is (assuming it's a real comic).

Re: Movies that feature actual comic books

I haven't had much luck with the stuff I've watched recently. I do have two more that don't really count.

Spoiler:

The kid in the educational short, Human Reproduction (1947), is reading a comic. I can't tell what it is, or if it's even a real comic.

If you don't blink while watching The Mutilator (1984), you can almost, sort of see a copy of Mad # 240 (July, 1983) on a magazine rack inside a store (you can see it a little better if you pause the movie and look real hard).

Solo Avengers #19 (June, 1989)

On the top of the stack on the table:

^ I'm interested in watching this movie after reading the synopsis on IMDB. Doesn't seem like something you can easily rent, though.

I just happened to catch it on a Roku streaming channel called Shockwerks TV (it's like American Horrors, but better - they start the movies every two hours like B-Movie TV). There's always

A copy of Mad #244 (Jan, 1984) can be seen for a couple of seconds in Deadtime Stories (1986).

I know that's a MAD magazine but how did you figure out the issue no.? Besides the obvious title I can't make out the rest of that shit.

As you said, the title is obvious, so I went to this Mad Magazine cover site. The movie has a 1985 copyright date and was released in 1986, so I started looking at the thumbnail pics starting with 1985 and working back until I saw one that looked possible and clicked on it. Since my copy of the movie looked so bad, I was going mostly by shapes at first, but Alfred E. Newman's head and torso, and the explosions, are obvious to me there in the movie shot once I saw the original cover.

Here's a zoomed in shot (from a second later than the one I posted, without the teddy bear) compared with the cover (slanted, blurred, de-colored, etc.).

Here's the other comics that were on sale the same month as the Batman and Little Audrey comics to help them out.

Re: Movies that feature actual comic books

I haven't watched Bronx Tale in ages and the computer commercial about the musical version on TV made me want to pop the DVD in and watch it.

The story takes place in 1960 but the Human Fly comic is from 1978.

Human Fly #8 April 1978

I haven't had a chance to see which issues of Superboys those are yet. The one in the middle looks hard since the cover is folded over.

Re: Movies that feature actual comic books

The opening credits for Robot Monster are superimposed over a pile of comic books. Aside from the one copy of Strange Suspense Stories with its title changed to "Robot Monster," they're all real comics, so I think it deserves a mention.

Spoiler:

The comics I was able to identify:

Spoiler:
All these are from Fawcett:

Strange Stories from Another World #5 (Feb, 1953)
Strange Suspense Stories #5 (Feb, 1953)
Beware Terror Tales #6 (Mar, 1953)
Beware Terror Tales #7 (May, 1953)
Beware Terror Tales #8 (July, 1953)
This Magazine is Haunted #11 (June, 1953)
Underworld Crime #5 (Mar, 1953)
Underworld Crime #6 (June, 1953)
Battle Stories #9 (May, 1953)
Worlds of Fear #10 (June, 1953)

Spoiler:
And these two are from Dell:

Tom Corbett, Space Cadet #6 (May/July, 1953)
Four Color #375 (Edgar Rice Burroughs' John Carter of Mars) (1952)

Spoiler:

And, just for the heck of it, here they all are placed on the screenshot. The only part I couldn't identify was the one or two books in the top left corner.

Re: Movies that feature actual comic books

This next one, Poltergeist, I noticed on a YouTube video which included scenes from the movie. I checked here and saw that it had been mentioned early in the thread, but we didn't have any pics. So here's some pics.

Captain America #259 (Marvel - July, 1981)

Richie Rich #202 (Harvey - May, 1981) & Madhouse Comics #125 (Archie - Aug, 1981)

Re: Movies that feature actual comic books

In one scene in The Curse (1987), the dimwitted kid is reading a copy of Laugh #233 (August, 1970), and has a copy of Laugh #173 (August, 1965) and some other comic sitting on his leg.

A closer look:

Re: Movies that feature actual comic books

Here's George Sanders in Future Women (Rio 70, The Girl from Rio, Die sieben Männer der Sumuru, etc.) (1969), enjoying Popeye #84 (King - Feb, 1967). I assume the cover was switched to the back of the book to make it easier to see.

Screen grab is from The Accountant. Obviously not the real books.
