It took me a while to get hold of a copy of Winds of War. I haven't had time to watch it yet, but I scanned through it and found the scene you mentioned (it's in Part 2: "The Storm Breaks").

The scene begins focused on a bunch of comics on the ground.

The most obvious books are: Superman #5 (Summer, 1940),Superman #3 (Winter, 1940), and Superman #1 (May, 1939).

A little less obvious - Superman #340 (Oct., 1979) and Superman #355 (Jan., 1981),

and a coverless copy of Jonah Hex #28 (Sept., 1979).

Then Jan Michael Vincent drops a copy of Action Comics #17 (Oct., 1939), and picks up Superman #5...

Which he is reading while Robert Mitchum walks up to him.

They talk for a bit, then Jan Michael Vincent retrieves a few typewritten pages from the pile of comics,

and we see a copy of Superman #4 (Spring, 1940),

and Underdog #8 (Aug., 1976).

Another UK comic. In the opening moments of The House That Vanished (Scream... and Die!) (1973), this kid can be seen reading a copy of Tarzan of the Apes #53 (Top Sellers LTD, Mar 2, 1973).

Re: Movies that feature actual comic books

This one was just set dressing on screen for a few seconds. In Bloodbrothers (1978) just before the mother comes into his room to yell at the anorexic kid for not eating his breakfast, what looks like a comic book can be seen on his bed. I thought that was a DC logo on the top left, which narrowed it down.

I think it's a copy of Wonder Woman #234 (Aug., 1977).

In the McDonald's training film, Six Steps to Success (1970), Pat Paulsen is giving a lecture to a group of McDonald's trainees, one of whom is reading an Archie comic.

Hard to tell given the faded color, but it looks like a copy of Archie #202 (Aug., 1970) to me.

Re: Movies that feature actual comic books

Another industrial short. In Robot Reality (1989), a film about safety procedures for industrial robots used in factories, the narrator mentions that people once feared robots, and first, scenes from Metropolis appear onscreen, then they show the cover, and a few interior panels from Magnus, Robot Fighter #14 (May, 1966).

Later, the narrator says robots are no longer used as villains in fiction as they were in the past, and the cover of Where Monsters Dwell #26 (Jan., 1974) shows onscreen.

Re: Movies that feature actual comic books

HD prints really help to see these. In the final scene in the gigolo's apartment in She Mob (1968), it was obvious he was an avid reader, given all his books and magazines. So I figured there'd be comics, and there were.

I think I see Green Lantern #52 (April, 1967), X-Men #23 (Aug., 1966), Fantastic Four #69 (Dec., 1967), Amazing Spider-Man # 55 (Dec., 1967), and a few others I haven't identified (including a Batman comic on the floor).

Here's a better look at Amazing Spider-Man # 55.

EDIT: I took another look at the movie, and grabbed a shot from where they sweep the comics off the table (that's how Spider-Man ended up on the floor in the shot above). You can see the top comic is an X-Men comic. From there it wasn't hard to find the cover. I believe it's a copy of X-Men #38 (Nov., 1967).

And, not a comic, but
Spoiler:

this Famous Monsters Speak album is pretty cool, and an odd thing for a gigolo to own.

Re: Movies that feature actual comic books

Another one you have to be really looking for to notice, plus, more Mad Magazines! In Video Violence (1987) there's a magazine rack in the deli. The first couple of magazines on the middle shelf are Mad Magazines.

Bottom left in the first picture. Top center in the second.

Looks like Mad #266 (October, 1986) & Mad Super Special #58 (Spring 1987). According to madcoversite.com, the second magazine was advertised inside the first (which made it super-easy to identify).

Re: Movies that feature actual comic books

Not a movie: In the episode of Inside/Out titled "Must I/May I," a kid stops in a drugstore looking for a comic book. Unfortunately he goes to a magazine rack and not a comic rack, and we only get to see two comics.

Pretty sure he's looking at Western Gunfighters #1 (Aug., 1970) and #2 (Oct., 1970).

Edit: Spoiler alert: He decides to buy issue #1.

Another educational short. In Acid (1971), a guy goes into another guy's apartment for some LSD, and you can see a copy of DC Special #8 (Jul/Sep 1970) on his ottoman.

Another Mad Magazine. The kid in How to Be a Perfect Person in Just Three Days (1983) has a couple of comic books in his messy room (unfortunately we only see interior pages, and nothing looked familiar to me), but in the opening scene we can see the cover of a copy of Mad Super Special #35 (Summer, 1981) on his bed.

Well I was going to try to figure this out myself, but I am not up to the task so I will defer to Dimension X: About 25 minutes into "The Devil All the Time" on Netflix, the kid is reading a comic book. It's folded back in the way that makes collectors cringe and you can't see the cover, but it's got the title printed on every page like some of them used to do in the 60s.

I give up. I'm stumped. Here's a screenshot from the scene you mentioned:

Obviously it's a Charlton comic. It looks like Dec., 1959 is when they started printing "CHARLTON COMICS GIVE YOU MORE!" on odd number pages, and they kept doing that through 1965. I've looked through Space Adventures, Space War, Strange Suspense Stories, Mysteries of Unexplored Worlds, Unusual Tales, and maybe some more, and I did find the inside back cover ad (in 1965 books), but not the story shown.

Maybe someone else wants to give it a try and read some Charlton comics. Maybe I'll give it another go some time.

Re: Movies that feature actual comic books

In Island Claws (1980), this guy comes home to his converted bus after work and settles down to enjoy a Milky Way and a comic book, when crabs attack!

In this next shot, on the bed we can see the book he was reading, along with a copy of Justice Inc. #4 (DC - Dec., 1975), and another one I'm not going to bother to try to identify.

And finally, here we see a crab next to a copy of Our Fighting Forces #162 (DC - Dec., 1975), and a Fantastic Four comic (or two) that I haven't identified to the left of the picture, under the banjo.

Re: Movies that feature actual comic books

In Star Kid (1997), the kid is a comic book fan with comic book posters and figures in his room. We mostly see a fake comic called Midknight Warrior, but in this shot we can see a few real comics too:

Including Warlock and the Infinity Watch #33 (Marvel - Oct, '94), Nightwatch #1 (Marvel - April, '94), and Captain America #428 (Marvel - June, '94).

Re: Movies that feature actual comic books

In the McGraw-Hill educational short Meaning of Adolescence (1953), this kid is reading a Classics Illustrated comic (no idea which one).

EDIT: Okay I couldn't leave it alone. I'm pretty certain that it is a copy of Classics Illustrated #20 (The Corsican Brothers) (March, 1945). Here's the tops of page 26 and the back cover to compare with the above shots:

And, just to convince myself, I grabbed another shot from the short where you can see a bit of the page before the one in the first shot. Here it is compared to the top of page 25 from that issue:

Oops. Forgot the cover.

Re: Movies that feature actual comic books

In the Coronet short Communications in the Modern World (1959), we get a few quick looks at a newsstand with a row of comics hanging down low for the kids.

I see copies of Casper the Friendly Ghost #67, Adventure Comics #248, Real Screen Comics #122, Joe Palooka #106, Super Duck Comics #79, Lone Ranger #119, Dick Tracy #123, Tubby #28 (all April or May, 1958) for sure (I got tired of looking at them, and quit), and, of course, a copy of Mad #39 (May, 1958) up on the top right in the second shot.

Re: Movies that feature actual comic books

About a half hour into Savage (1996), the protagonist goes to a newsstand and walks past a comic rack.

You can see copies of Deathstroke, the Terminator #22 (DC - May, 1993), Eternal Warrior #16 (Valiant - November, 1993), James Bond 007:Shattered Helix #1 (Dark Horse - June, 1994), and Scarlett #8 (DC - August, 1993).

Then some bad guys pull up on motorcycles next to the comic rack. A fight breaks out,
and one of the bad guys gets thrown into the comic rack.

After the fight, the hero goes over by the adult magazines to get a pair of sunglasses, and in the background, you can see a copy of Penthouse Comix #7 (May/June, 1995).

The funny thing is, I don't thing Valiant comics were available on the new stands. They were only sold in comic book stores, I believe that most if not all Dark Horse comics were as well.

Re: Movies that feature actual comic books

In Once Upon a Time... In Hollywood (2019), Brad Pitt's character has a few comics in his trailer.

The two on top are Sgt. Fury and His Howling Commandos #66 (May, 1969) and Kid Colt, Outlaw #134 (May, 1967). The Sgt. Fury comic would not have been on the stands for another few weeks at that point in the movie.

Spoiler:
This kind of makes up for that minor anachronism - the fake Mad magazine that Leonardo DiCaprio's character has framed on his wall does have the correct number and price for that date (#65, September, 1961). Here's a shot from the film, along with the actual Mad cover for that date (just because).

Re: Movies that feature actual comic books

In Robot Ninja (1989), the main character is a comic book artist who writes and draws a fictional comic book called Robot Ninja. The final scene in the movie takes place in a book store that also sells comics, and we see some real comics. As the camera travels through the store, we see this young lady checking out a rack of DC trade paperbacks, including Justice League: A New Beginning, The Man of Steel, The New Teen Titans: The Judas Contract, Watchmen, and a Batman TPB on the top that I'm not able to identify.

Then we see the main character's fake comic book, alongside copies of Conan the Barbarian #230 (October, 1989) and Damage Control #4 (August, 1989).

And finally, another young lady buys a few comics (with a copy of Swamp Thing #87 (June, 1989) on top) from a guy sitting in front of a display of Batman comics.

The batman comics we can see behind him are...

Batman #368 (February, 1984), Detective Comics #566 (September, 1986), Batman #366 (December, 1983), Batman: The Killing Joke, Batman #407 (May, 1987), Detective Comics #504 (July, 1981), Detective Comics #569 (December, 1986), and Detective Comics #570 (January, 1987).

In Commando Ninja (2018), a guard at the bad guy's hideout is reading a copy of G.I. Joe Special Missions #8 (Dec., 1987). This part of the movie takes place in 1986.

Re: Movies that feature actual comic books

In Annabelle Comes Home (2019) you can see the back of a small rack of comics in the supermarket scene. Unfortunately you can't see the front covers, but the ads on the backs all appear to be legit.

However, I believe these ads are all from the early '70s (I think I still have my Imposter), and I read online that the movie is supposed to be set in 1969.
