Movie scenes you feel contained some of the best acting ever filmed.
What were some of those scenes where you were left in awe thinking "Damn, that was some epic acting"
I thought this would be a fun topic. Here are a few of my favorites: A Few Good Men -- ending exchange between Cruise/Nicholson "you can't handle the truth Shawshank Redemption -- Redd's parole scene The Godfather -- Vito's plea in the meeting of the 5 families (well, i would actually argue for every scene Brando is in in The Godfather) |
Re: Movie scenes you feel contained some of the best acting ever filmed.
JFK - Costner's opening/closing remarks in the trial of Clay Shaw.

De Niro and Cazale confrontation in "The Deer Hunter." "You wanna play games? Alright, I'll play your fuckin' games!" Say what you will about the film, but that scene is epic.
Another favorite was always the Sean Penn/Chris Walken confrontation in "At Close Range." Sends chills down my spine. |

Just about every scene in "Blue Valentine" with Williams and Gosling. This film truly has some of the best, most realistic acting I've seen in many years.

The Fountain. When Tom is in the bubble asking the "ghost" "What do you want from me?".

I love the scene with Ed Harris in The Abyss when he's trying to revive his wife.

Mean Streets...Robert De Niro playing Johnny Boy and when Harvey Keitel slaps him around in the bar after bringing the 2 Jewish girls in was just the epitome of acting imo. |

Hayden Christensen and Natalie Portman in Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones. That was by far the best on-screen romantic couple I have ever seen. It was so amazingly realistic I thought they could actually be a couple in real life.

Just about all of GlenGarry Glen Ross.

I don't care what people think about the film, but I love the subtle things in Robin's work in What Dreams May Come, especially between him and Annabella Sciorra.

Re: Movie scenes you feel contained some of the best acting ever filmed.
Dustin Hoffman in Marathon Man, when his character is supposed to have been up for 24 hours (little inside joke there...)
But I'll also throw in a completely wordless one: in Boogie Nights, when Dirk (Mark Wahlberg) is in Rahad's drug house. There's a long sequence, more than a minute I think, while Rick Springfield's "Jesse's Girl" plays in the background, of Dirk just contemplating his situation. You can totally read everything that Dirk is thinking in his drug-fueled haze, mostly along the lines of "I've completely fucked up my life" |

Beginning at the museum and all the way to the elevator scene, Angie Dickinson gives one of her best performances (with little to no dialogue) ever in Dressed to Kill (1980).

Re: Movie scenes you feel contained some of the best acting ever filmed.
Before the Devil Knows You're Dead - Philip Seymour Hoffman breaking down in the car next to Marisa Tomei.
Last Tango In Paris - Marlon Brando and his dead wife. Requiem for a Dream - Ellen Burstyn "What have I got" The Master - PSH & Joaquin Phoenix in prison and the final goodbye. Sophie's Choice - Meryl Streep has to choose. American History X - Edward Norton at the dinner table lecturing. Magnolia - Tom Cruise and his father. The Boston Strangler - Tony Curtis confesses. |
Re: Movie scenes you feel contained some of the best acting ever filmed.
Devil Wears Prada...The Belt/Cerulean/Fashion Industry influence scene. Streep was on fire.

Two scenes from De Niro that show how a master actor conveys so well what the character is thinking and feeling without ever having to utter a single word. I miss the great De Niro.

Re: Movie scenes you feel contained some of the best acting ever filmed.
there have been many, but I will post one possibly offbeat and controversial one...
DeForest Kelley in Star Trek V: The Final Frontier during the scene where he is interacting with his father. The movie was complete shit, but man, that scene always stuck with me and is some phenomenal acting by the late Mr. Kelley. |

I'm blow away by Klaus Kinski's death scene in Nosferatu, in that moment, he is devoid of anything resembling human characteristics, I felt like I was watching an insect.

James Cagney freaking out in the prison mess hall after first hearing about his mother's death in WHITE HEAT (1949):
