Yeah. I've always wondered why Holmes isn't particularly well-known. He never entered the popular consciousness even though his whole MO was pretty much a horror movie. You read about his crimes and it's almost impossible to believe it actually happened. It was like a nineteenth century Saw.

The castle he built to kill and destroy is seriously screwed up. The story cold be really interesting, just not sure Di Caprio is the right choice. I think he is a fine actor, but i have yet to ever see a performance where he has blown me away. For some reason Scorsese is in love with the guy, and thats a shame as De Niro coulod sure use Scorsese to get his groove back.

Still in the hands of Marty i think thisn will be worth watching.

De Niro is with David O. Russell now who is riding Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper into box office and award success. De Niro is fine lol.

I dunno, I really liked Shutter Island as well as Wolf of Wall Street and The Departed.

Seems like this may definitely be the next one in line for Scorsese:

Damnit, wasn't he supposed to make something with DeNiro and Pacino next?

I think the article is only talking about working on the script, not that they will film soon.

The Irishman is supposed to start filming early next year.

The Irishman is such a bland name compared to I Heard You Paint Houses, which just sounds like a Scorsese movie.

I think you're right. Now looking back at other news regarding The Irishman.

Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese's The Devil in the White City adaptation is going from a film to a TV series.

Hulu and Paramount Television are developing a small screen adaptation of Erik Larson’s New York Times bestselling nonfiction thriller. The news was announced onstage at the Television Critics Association press tour on Monday.

The Devil in the White City tells the chilling true story of two men, an architect and a serial killer, whose fates were forever linked by The Chicago World’s Fair of 1893. Each embodying American ingenuity at the dawn of the 20th century — Daniel H. Burnham, a brilliant and fastidious architect racing to make his mark on the world and Henry H. Holmes, a handsome and cunning doctor who fashioned his own pharmaceutical “Murder Castle” on fair grounds — a palace built to seduce, torture and mutilate young women.

The project has been in development at various studios since 2003. It was previously at Warner Bros, before moving to Paramount — but the studio let the rights lapse in 2004 and again in 2007, as the period setting posed budgetary challenges. At one point, Tom Cruise was to star and produce an adaptation and later Kathryn Bigelow was attached to direct and produce. It wasn't until 2010 that DiCaprio, said to be long fascinated by the dark subject matter, nabbed the rights himself.

Few details about the TV series — including whether or not DiCaprio will take an onscreen role in the series as initially planned in the movie version — are known at this time. In addition to Scorsese and DiCaprio, executive producers will include Stacey Sher, Rick Yorn, Emma Koskoff and Jennifer Davisson.

I hope DiCaprio does it, but I'm guessing he may just exec produce now. It would be odd to see him commit to a series, but he's been so obsessed with this property that maybe...just maybe...he'll do it.

Seems like they started development on this a couple years after the actual World's Fair it's based on ended!

Back in development as a film:

EXCLUSIVE: The long-awaited film adaptation of Erik Larson’s bestselling book The Devil in the White City just got a shot of adrenaline, as sources tell Deadline that 20th Century has come on to the project with Leonardo DiCaprio in talks to star and Martin Scorsese in talks to direct. DiCaprio and Scorsese would also produce along with Stacey Sher, Rick Yorn and DiCaprio’s Appian Way partner Jennifer Davisson.

Sources add that there is currently no script for the pic, which is based on the book Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic and Madness at the Fair That Changed America first published in 2004.

DiCaprio and Scorsese have been developing the project for some time, and sources say they always felt this was a story that has resonated throughout the years. and still does. DiCaprio first landed rights to the book in 2010, and though the project has gone through various stages of development over the years, including a TV series adaptation at Hulu that never came to fruition), insiders say that following a meeting with 20th Century execs, all parties were on board to tell this story at the theatrical level.

The story follows Dr. HH Holmes, a cunning serial killer believed to have murdered anywhere from 27 to 200 people at a time when the city of Chicago was enthralled with hosting the World’s Columbian Exposition of 1893. The book plays off the contrasts between the hopeful expectations and wonders presented at the exposition and the dark deeds of Holmes, who maneuvered in its shadows.

This marks another massive victory for David Greenbaum, who leads Disney Live Action and 20th Century Studios and Steve Asbell, president of 20th, who have been on a rollgoing back to landing another high-profile package: the Bruce Springsteen pic Deliver Me From Nowhere starring Jeremy Allen White. They quickly followed that by landing the sought-after package The Barrier starring Austin Butler with Edward Berger directing. All three projects line up with what Greenbaum wants for 20th: films that that embody commercial, global theatrical and prestige with A-list talent and original filmmaking.

Asbell, Greenbaum and SVP Production Sarah Shepard will be overseeing Devil in the White City for the studio.

LBI Entertainment reps DiCaprio, Appian Way and Scorsese, who is also repped by WME.

This seems interesting. Although, truthfully, the entire selling point for me is the name “Martin Scorsese”. I’ll see every film he makes until he stops making them.

This thread is pretty small considering it was started in 2003. Was a big chunk cut out? I could've sworn I had posted in this thread years ago but don't see an old post. Maybe my braining is draining.

I didn’t really care for the book but it’s definitely an interesting story that I’d like to see played out on the big screen.

I know DiCaprio is the obvious (lazy) choice in a Scorsese movie but I’m not sure he’s the right choice for Holmes (assuming that’s who he’s going to play). Holmes was only in his late 20s/early 30s during that time. I think someone like Nicholas Hoult would be a better choice.

Who knows, maybe Leo is tapped to play the investigating detective or one of the World’s Fair architects.
