A pilot lands work for the CIA and as a drug runner in the south during the 1980s (per IMDB).
Interesting, kinda like Cruise not being right for Jack Reacher (physically) the character he plays in this (Barry Seal) supposedly weighed 280 pounds. I wonder if there was thought to having Cruise put on a bunch of weight for this. It certainly doesn't look like it in some photos I've seen in the UK rags.
Odd that the movie has supposedly wrapped shooting in Atlanta but won't come out until January, 2017. The film also has Domhnall Gleeson and Jesse Plemons.

Not a chance. The only thing Cruise has ever changed for a movie is his hair cut. Beyond that he's always been an "accept me as I am" actor. Luckily, IMO, Cruise's acting ability and charisma is enough to make me accept him in pretty much any movie regardless of whether he "fits" that particular character or not.

Anything with Tom Cruise is a pass for me these days, not because he's crazy, it's because he's just not believable in any role. Takes me right out of any film he's in.

Hell of a change for him for sure.
At least he does them better than Stallone and Sly right now.

Back in the '90s, the Mena airport was like Barack Obama's birth certificate to rightwing nutjobs. Supposedly Bill Clinton was ordering state troopers to go out and murder people to cover up drug smuggling there. I remember my father bought some "documentary" about it that was advertized on the Rush Limbaugh show.

Anyhow, for people that don't know, "Mena" is a city in Arkansas.

So the murder is questionable. The rest of the story indicate conspiracy theories. The story on Wikipedia sounds awesome ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barry_Seal ).
I know that the cocaine stories on MSNBC are popular. So just a matter of time before we get a movie about the era.
The whole CIA-arms/cocaine-trade scene from the 80's would make an epic information-dense Traffic-style movie.

Just was at a Q&A with Cruise for Rogue Nation - said they finished filming this movie just over a week ago and that it is going to be hilarious - I'd love to see Doug Liman return to something in the vein of Swingers/Go, so I have no problem with this being a major satire.

Tom Cruise’s cartel film “Mena” is now called “American Made,” and is moving from Jan. 6, 2017, to Sept. 29, 2017, Universal Pictures announced on Monday.
“American Made” is the latest collaboration between Cruise and director Doug Liman, who helmed the A-lister in “Edge of Tomorrow.”
“American Made” is based on the real-life exploits of Barry Seal, a hustler for drug kingpin Pablo Escobar and pilot unexpectedly recruited by the CIA to run one of the biggest covert operations in U.S. history, one that almost brought down the Reagan White House through the Iran Contra scandal. Cruise, himself a trained pilot, plays Seal.
Imagine Entertainment’s Brian Grazer, Cross Creek Pictures’ Brian Oliver and Tyler Thompson, Quadrant Pictures’ Doug Davison and Kim Roth are producing. Cross Creek Pictures is financing the film, with Universal handling distribution.
The film generated headlines last year, when a plane carrying crew members crashed on the set in Colombia in September 2015, killing two people and seriously injuring a third person. Local authorities believe that bad weather caused the twin-engine Aerostar to crash.
Cruise was in production on the movie at the time of the incident, but was not on the plane. The two people killed were identified as American film pilot Alan David Purwin and Colombian Carlos Berl.

Looks like Jack Reachers jackass brother. Even that bit where he's bribing them with Caddy's sounds like the beginning of Jack Reacher 2. This looks fun, I'll check it out. It's nice seeing Cruise rolling with different stuff yet again.
