I liked Ant Man and was hoping it'd open a bit bigger, but think it'll do fine in the long haul. The stratospheric openings of stuff like Jurassic and Avengers kind of ramp expectations up over the top IMHO.

But if Fantastic Four opens bigger than Ant Man, it's clobberin' time! (For someone, not sure who, but definitely someone.)

I know you're trying to make Ain't-Man happen, but I feel like Can't-Man works better in this case.

if you're reaching enough for Ain't-Man, just take the extra step and make him Taint-Man.

I don't buy any of that. It's all about how you handle the material.

There's this quote that I love from Michael McKean, when asked if he had any trepidation about making a movie based on a board game (Clue). He basically waived off the question and said “You could make a good movie, or a shitty one, based on anything.”

I sure did. Ted 2 came in with a general reaction of "Really? That's getting a sequel?" whereas PP2 was "Yeah! Can't wait to see it!" from its target audience.

With the exception of Iron Man, none of the other phase 1 origin movies broke $200 million so I don't see it as a failure if Ant Man doesn't break that mark domestically. Usually the sequels do better once the character is established with the public.

I think for most of the general public, they had a tough time connecting Ant-Man to the greater Marvel filmverse. He's an unknown character and the trailers mostly played up positive reviews.

I'd be shocked if the new Fantastic Four gets more than $55 million opening weekend. It seems bound to be the lowest Marvel opening.

I somehow don't see it opening lower than Elektra ($12.8m) or Punisher War Zone ($4.2m) and it looks better than the previous iterations. I'm guessing it'll open higher than Ghost Rider ($48m) and Ghost Rider 2 ($22m)

Yeah, I think there's some confusion here as to what constitutes a Marvel Film. When we say Ant-Man is the 2nd lowest Marvel opening, that means among the Marvel Studios releases. (The MCU movies, from Iron Man going forward)

Fantastic Four is not a Marvel Studios release, and neither are any of the movies in the second post quoted above.

In an earlier post I asked who the hell was interested in Amy Schumer. Well, this quote from Box Office Guru answers that question:

Amy Schumer scored her first hit movie with her first try as Trainwreck debuted well in third place with an estimated $30.2M putting it in the same range as many other top R-rated comedy hits from more established box office stars. Universal's umpteenth success this year averaged a muscular $9,575 from 3,158 locations with white adult women leading the charge. Studio data showed that the audience was 74% white, 66% female, and 63% over 30.
OWL's - Old White Ladies.

(Hey, I do my part--when Stallone makes an Expendables film for my demographic, OWMs--Old White Men--I show up for it.)

I saw a lot of younger couples at my showing. Not sure if it was due to proximity but the guys were laughing the loudest. One guy was actually stomping his foot from time to time. He was really enjoying the heck out of the movie.

I think everybody is aware that that is what most people consider "Marvel" movie, but as Ranger was stating something about FF, I figured he meant "based on a Marvel comic".

Not sure if Ranger understood that difference. When he said it was sure to be the lowest Marvel opening, it read like he was referring back to earlier in the thread when it was stated Ant-Man was the second lowest Marvel opening after TIH.

It doesn't really make sense to me to state the FF will be the lowest Marvel opening unless you're referring back to that. (Especially if you think it can top out at 55 Million, as Ranger stated)

As you demonstrated, there are tons of "based on Marvel" movies made by other studios that opened way below all of the Marvel Studios movies already, and FF is sure to beat many of those.

Since when was 30 old??? And I'm interested in her. 28 year old male. Plus the movie has Lebron James and John Cena.

Jurassic World continues to impress (as well as Inside Out), soft drops for both where everyone else in the top 10 were at least 54%.

I agree, those are the stars of the summer imho (Honorable mention to Mad Max FR just for being so damn good for a mainstream flick)

I'm really surprised that with the positive reviews and great word of mouth that Ant-Man didn't do about $70 Million this weekend. The movie is a ton of fun and it really should have been this years Guardians of the Galaxy.

The ad campaign was lackluster, that's true. And the production issues with Wright leaving created a negative impression with some people, but the movie itself turned out really well - it really is the ideal Summer movie!

We'll see what kind of legs it has. I certainly hope it gets a sequel. Now that Scott knows how to be an effective superhero it would be nice to see him in action - with the Wasp at his side! I think a sequel could be even better than this one.

Reviews only go so far and WOM usually helps prevent big drops but rarely helps opening weekend. It's a less appealing movie than the other Marvel flicks (He shrinks with a suit. I'm not sure many kids day dream about shrinking over being a bad ass) and it has terrible advertising (visually looks low budget and borderline made for TV, content wise it looks very middle of the road). If it were by any other studio it would have a fraction of what it opened with.

The Wright issue had next to no real negative effect, financially speaking.
