Looks good, actually.

This has been one of my most anticipated movies of the summer. I really love Amy Schumer and quite a bit of Judd's films too.

Re: Trainwreck (Apatow, 2015) The Reviews Thread
I can't stand Schumer. She's another one of those female comedians who tries wayyy too hard to be edgy & offensive and instead comes across as desperate for laughs. I have never once laughed at any of her comedy.
Hader, on the other hand, is great. Still won't get me to watch the movie, though. |
Re: Trainwreck (Apatow, 2015) The Reviews Thread
looking forward to this actually. been dvr'ing Inside Amy Schumer and really enjoying the eps. i'm not a big raunch guy, but she does it well. i don't see many comedies in theaters because i am not as amused as i am at home watching them, but i might make an exception for this. love Apatow's directed comedies mostly, especially Funny People...

I actually like Schumer a lot so I plan to see this. She seems like she's pretty down to earth and real.

I like how utterly tasteless she is, in general. Been a fan since her divisive Sheen roast:

Re: Trainwreck (Apatow, 2015) The Reviews Thread
I just watched a full episode of Inside Amy Schumer last night for the first time. Pretty sure it was the latest, newest one. It had the skit where she goes to a specialist who tries to teach her how to smile. It was literally one of the worst things I've ever watched in my life.

I kind of like her. Her bluntness and more relaxed attitude, I can dig that. I just think some of her stuff doesn't fully go where it could. It's nice but could have been stronger. Either way... I still enjoy her. Her show is iffy to me. I don't NOT like her but the quality isn't up there. Feels like she had a good setup for a laugh but it kind of just goes far enough for the point but not for it to be solid.

Re: Trainwreck (Apatow, 2015) The Reviews Thread
I've seen a few sketches of Schumer's show online and they were OK. I also watched the full episode that was a parody of 12 Angry Men and really enjoyed it, though she was hardly in it herself.

I've only ever seen bits of her standup routine, pretty much the whole thing revolved around her sex life. She was made up almost baby-faced to contrast the raunchy things she was saying. I didn't really see enough to form a cogent opinion, but there was definitely a "did she really just say that"'factor to a lot of it (though my threshold for being shock by anything related to sex is fairly low). I like Apatow enough, and the trailers for this don't look bad. I'm kind of surprised he didn't at least work on the script somewhat. As his movies tend to be, I won't be surprised if it's too long (and I expect a screed from Mark Kermode about its "gender politics"), but it will no doubt be full of his outrageous humor and a moral about monogamy.

I liked this more than I expected. Lots of jokes, lots of current/past SNL stars and some nice sports cameos. LeBron James was in this more than I expected and he's not too shabby.
On a personal note, the movie did tug at my heart a few times. Eyes got moist. One bit part I got a cheap thrill from was Chris Evert (yes, the tennis player) uttered the word Spoiler:

I want to see this still. I saw Ant-Man yesterday but this one I'll see today or tomorrow.

I don't want to see this because LeBron James is in it :( :p

I saw this today. Or tried to. Storms knocked out the power to the area in maybe the last 20 minutes. There were plenty of laugh out loud moments, but Schumer's character was just so unlikeable to me.
Anybody care to recap the ending? Spoiler:

My parents went to see it (they're in their 60s), and they both loved it and said the theater was packed with mostly middle-aged couples.
This will get good word of mouth. |

Stephanie Zacharek gives TRAINWRECK an interesting critique in the Village Voice:

Re: Trainwreck (Apatow, 2015) The Reviews Thread
Just saw it today and it was pretty damn funny. Like all Apatow films, it's too long though and could have easily have lost 30 minutes somewhere. I like the fact that there is a big studio summer release R-rated movie romcom that has a strong focus on sex that does NOT star some size zero hottie and some six-pack stud. And I was pleasantly surprised by Lebron James, who is a pretty decent actor.
And props to Apatow and/or Schumer for a We Need to Talk About Kevin reunion in a major studio comedy, of all things. |
Re: Trainwreck (Apatow, 2015) The Reviews Thread
Yeah. I was pretty fucking happy to see Tilda Swinton. She was rocking it. I just love her.
I really enjoyed this one. Could have been cut down a bit. More like condensed what was there more so than anything, I guess. I liked how it didn't go all the way Apatow does w/ the ridiculousness at times, not like he does it a lot but it was more restrained. I'm weird about how resolutions comes in comedies like this. I liked the ending but also think it could been differently. I liked her dancing bit. She still looked cute as fuck when she was dancing alright compared to the other women. I think I liked this more than Apatow's other stuff cuz it was woman leading it w/ some restraint in a way that Apatow doesn't have. It also seemed less improv than his other stuff. I wondered how much of it was on the page, knowing that Cena in the theater was some improv. Yeah. Lebron James was rocking it. Great cast all around. Was fun to see actors I know well from other places being placed here in small roles. |
