Everyone pretty much knew Luke was going to relegated to just being a Force ghost in this. But I held out hope and my excitement level was 6/10 but now it is around 3/10.

Maybe J.J. will defy our expectations and reveal that Luke didn't die at the end of TLJ...

I'm sure we'll get a flashback sequence with Luke in body form... but otherwise, like stvn1974, I'm tempering any hope at this point.

So this dropped at D23. SPOILER NOTE...it's a poster and description of end of footage that revealed maybe big plot point
Spoiler:
...

Footage ended with a shot of Ray in full Sith mode including all black and wielding a double bladded saber:

Ooh, maybe they need to change the title to:

BRIDE OF PALPATINE

Probably was just a force vision. But interesting about the new lightsaber design.

It's so weird that Star Wars IX, the final chapter in the saga I've been following my entire life, is four months from being released, and Disney (Kennedy?Iger?) has fucked the sequel trilogy up so badly I'm just completely dreading it.

I should be in a state of near religious ecstasy, but I'm just feeling... sad.

I'm now cautiously optimistic. That full on unbridled fan boying before Last Jedi is definitely gone.

Re: Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker (12/20/19, W/D: J.J. Abrams)

Wow, I came here this morning expecting a huge amount of posts regarding the news that dropped this weekend regarding TROS, and 7 posts? Maybe Disney did a bad job of promoting this news since it's still summer, but this worries me that many fans just don't care at this point. I still don't believe the movie will bomb like Solo, simply because there are enough casual fans that will see a Saga movie that will be lured by Trailers of Force Ghost Luke, Lando, or any nostalgia trick they show. For me, the return of Palpatine has me intrigued and scared. I actually think JJ may pull it off and could give a good arc to the ST that ties atleast with the OT (I could care less about the PT). But my main worry is it diminishes the ROTJ ending, and the ST ends up being a true reboot of the OT when it is all said and done.

Some of the cast interviews from D23 seem to acknowledge TLJ's shortcomings and lack of narrative momentum. They're also pushing the notion that this new film will restore the faith. I'm not holding out hope on that happening.

Daisy Ridley: [Regarding VIII] At the end, I was like "Oh, this is strange." Because it sort of feels like a finish, but then we have another film to do. And then J.J. figured out a way to take the story in such a different direction.

Anthony Daniels: When you see The Rise of Skywalker, you'll see somebody did a magic trick. You almost won't be aware of... hm-mm... some of the things that happened before.

I'm sure it will be entertaining enough, as all of the new Star Wars movies have been in some shape or form.

I’m definitely hyped. Just the imagery from the teaser trailer is closer to what we got in TFA and even if it’s not an epic conclusion to the saga, as long as it recaptures some of that energy and fun of the first one it will be a good time.

If the trailer was actually posted, I'm sure there'd be more to talk about.

Yeah, looks like no trailer at D23. Just a sizzle reel of some kind that will be released publicly tomorrow.

Looks like they're using the same winning marketing strategy they used to promote Solo.

I just don’t care all that much about it at this point. I know I’ll see it and will probably go on opening night, but the hype for it just isn’t there for me. I hope it’s good but I’m not letting myself get too excited for it beforehand.

The Mandalorian and everything else Star Wars coming to Disney+ though I’m way excited about.

If you go back and look at all the promotional material so far (interviews, Vanity Fair article, Trailer, etc) they seem to be completely ignoring TLJ in terms of following through that story. We see Palpatine, The Knights of Ren, as this movie is almost rebooting a new story. Now I’m not saying they are overtly contradicting anything from TLJ, I think they are sort of treating it like a standalone episode that you see in many TV show seasons that veer from the overall arc. JJ is continuing TFA from a certain POV......

I know I'm the minority but I loved Last Jedi so Rise is all icing on a pretty tasty cake.

Unless this film can go back and fix all of the problems with Luke from the first two I don't care how amazing the rest of the film is. I have a feeling that I am just going to have to accept that my Star Wars will always just consist of the theatrical cuts of the Orginal Trilogy and I will be OK with that. They are all I had for my childhood and into my adult life so I can just keep on enjoying them.

i think they will have Luke do something incredible at the end of Episode 9 (I haven’t read spoilers so it’s just a hunch). For me, if he does something crazy cool to save the day and he and Leia are somehow in the final shot ‘passing the torch’ to the new cast as Force Ghosts (much like ROTJ ending) it may work for me. I loved TFA, so I can rationalize Luke’s 4,5,6,7,8.9 arc:

Farmboy to Jedi Training who learns a life altering secret to Jedi Master who throws his Lightsaber down to Disappearing/Off the grid to a Jedi who loses faith to the Ultimate Jedi who saves the day.

I think they know they fucked up with Luke, but I’m not sure how much can really be done to redeem the damage that’s been done.

I’m always of the school of thought regarding storytelling that the payoff is the most important thing and that gives you leeway to take the characters in any direction. I am not fan of TLJ Luke, but a great payoff for TROS Luke may work for a portion of the fanbase. ESB messed with all our beloved characters but we got a great payoff ending with them in ROTJ. Hopefully Disney understands that. I’m torn on whether that will happen or they’ll lose me altogether.

Luke vs Palpatine force ghost battle would be redemptive.

I could see an epic ending battle where we have the alive guys fighting the alive guys, intermixed with force ghost's battling on another plane of existence. with Ray and Kylo's battle going in and out of both realms. that'd be pretty sweet. total fan service, but sweet IMO.
