So many thumbs up from me on this one. I don't think they could've gone wrong with either JJ or RJ.

I am not surprised Kathleen Kennedy went back to her cucked "YES" man. I'll care when the so called next trilogy is done.

Makes sense. Wonder how much they're paying to entice him.

re: Star Wars: Episode IX (12/20/19, W/D: J.J. Abrams)

I'm sure it doesn't take much to be enticed to do another Star Wars film. It's a lot of work but at the end of the day he gets to work on one of the biggest franchises a second time and is bound to rake in big money. Abrams coming back is fine by me. Agreed that it had to be him or Rian Johnson and frankly I'm more hyped for this with Abrams in the director's chair as opposed to Trevorrow.

re: Star Wars: Episode IX (12/20/19, W/D: J.J. Abrams)

The only reason he wasn't doing The Last Jedi was because he didn't feel like he had enough time going from TFA post to the next film. He's had a nice break and should be good to go. But so much for his comments about no longer doing franchises.

I doubt money was a big factor.

My only fear is that little hairy creatures, not named Ewoks, will help destroy an as yet to be finished new Starkiller base but only this time Snoke will be on board.

We're already getting those in Last Jedi.

I'm happy to see this. Yes, giving another director a chance is always good, but so is going with a known quantity.

A safe choice but still a marked improvement over Trevorrow. I'd expect to hear word of a delay in release by the time TLJ arrives. There is no way this will be out by May 2019.

It makes sense. With Johnson, I was thought it probably wouldn't fit into his schedule, since he's focused on getting Episode VIII out up until December, and Lucasfilm likely wanted to get someone in now to work on rewrites so that IX can still come out on time.

re: Star Wars: Episode IX (12/20/19, W/D: J.J. Abrams)

Johnson confirmed at that press conference yesterday that VIII is pretty much completely finished. I'd wager the studio would have been fine with him sitting out the press tour if he ended up getting re-hired for IX.

Abrams is a competent director, but he couldn't have taken a less original approach on VII. Despite being a complete rehash, at least the movie was entertaining... but it only served to get me excited about where the characters could go with a fresh storyline for the sequels. Having him back in the pilot's seat isn't something I'm thrilled with. God forbid he completely apes the plot of RotJ and introduces another friggin' moon-sized weapon of destruction. And now they've recruited the co-writer of Batman v Superman to help overhaul the screenplay? Yeah, Trevorrow might not have been that bad in hindsight.

Personally I still feel like taking the safe route and re-telling parts of the Original Trilogy while still adding plenty of new elements was the best route to take with The Force Awakens. That film had to serve the purpose of bringing Star Wars to a new audience and convincing fanboys that it was in the right hands. In my opinion it did both of those things well.

Yikes

Abrams is a great choice. Makes the most sense and he'll handle it well.

re: Star Wars: Episode IX (12/20/19, W/D: J.J. Abrams)

I would like to see a woman director/screenwriter given a break with this franchise. I seem to recall Kennedy shutting down an interviewer who brought up that topic, while segueing it into a story about how she got her break at a TV studio looking to hire female behind-the-scenes talent.

One of my favorite moments in TFA is when Rey takes a moment to tap into the Force and center herself before gaining the upper hand in the duel with Kylo Ren. Abrams said in his audio commentary that the scene was a reshoot based on a suggestion from Ava Duvernay, whom he had showed an early cut of the film to. She's clearly got good instincts. I'm sure there are plenty of other female candidates out there who could lend a fresh perspective. I've never considered "Star Wars" a boys only club.

re: Star Wars: Episode IX (12/20/19, W/D: J.J. Abrams)

Women have no understanding in defining masculine culture and identity, you can't speak on the behalf of us, just like so called male feminists can't speak for women. Patty Jenkins is right in calling out James Cameron for his Wonder Woman comments, and JJ Abrams is nothing more than a traitor to our gender. You failed us when you killed the most legendary Alpha male in movie history and gave his ship, a Man's ship to a girl.
