Re: Terminator: Genisys (2015) -- S: Schwarzenegger -- The Reviews Thread

Here's my review of Terminator: Genisys - To the point, if you go to be entertained by a decent sci-fi action movie, and are not concerned with how loose the plot plays with established Terminator canon, you will enjoy this movie very much, as I did. I rate this as my 4th favorite Terminator media, behind T2, the original, and the Sarah Conner TV series. I was surprised at how much humor was in the film. The recreation and expansion of scenes from the original Terminator were well done, and there were definite nods to T2 and The Sarah Conner Chronicles. A mid credit bonus scene at the end of the film promises a continuation, and I say bring it on. A solid 3.5 out of 4.

Saw it. wasn't terribly impressed. It amazes me how Jai Courtney keeps getting movie roles. Even Emilia Clarke wasn't that good in this as compared to her role in GoT. It was decent, but nothing I never need to see again. I think that will be the final nail in the coffin of the Terminator franchise for quite some time.

It's still going to make its money back, which is about all the studio can hope for at this point. I think there's still a good chance for a second TV series, but you're probably right about the movie franchise.

BOM has it w/ WW of $138 million. That's pretty weak. It had a budget of $155 million. OOOooooooof.

It's only been out for a week. It still hasn't opened in a few other countries yet.

Other than creating yet another changed timeline that doesn't jive with previous films, what other plotline can they come up with? I thought this was a fun Sci-fi action movie, but it did little to further the story. All it did was add another simultaneous one. Maybe the next one will be about sending the Terminator back to when Sarah was 9? Maybe they'll go back and try to kill one of her grandparents? There are a ton of possibilities, I just don't know how many compelling stories they can come up with for a 70 year old terminator that is looking a bit long in the tooth.

The next one will be the next chapter in this storyline. They wrote these new films as a trilogy.

So is this the lowest grossing entry in the series? Smells like it.

The way this movie is financed with the Producers paying 66% of the bill as opposed to Paramount covering all costs may get it another sequel. If Paramount was paying the bill solely, there is no way they would greenlight another movie. I think it depends on what the Ellisons want to do.

The studio will definitely make some money on Home Video sales as well. The Facebook page of this movie has been heavily plugging BD pre-orders.

Okay. So was this the lower grossing entry in the series theatrically?

Sorry I shouldn't have quoted you.

No, the 1st movie was. It only made $78M total. But, that was 1984 money.

I just did an inflation calculator and $78M from 1984 would be about $180M now. It would still be the lowest of the series.

Ah, I did forget that the original did okay theatrically. But I'm guessing Genisis is right behind.

But what about return vs. budget?

In terms of percentages the first film did the best. It made over 17 times its budget.

Hard to believe there was ever a time when James Cameron made a DIY low-budget independent film with a low carbon footprint.

And that's why he's king of the world. All of his movies made money. I think The Abyss has been his lowest grosser but that flick revolutionized special effects.

With a relatively little known former body builder with an accent as the antagonist.

The only thing he had going for him were the 2 Conan films. It was a perfect role for him because he barely spoke. I wonder how Arnold would do in a movie where spoke German?

After Avatar came out, Arnold jokingly said knew James Cameron back in his art-house days.

I guess "The Terminator" in some ways is an arthouse film. So is "Halloween". And both feature non-speaking (for the most part) seemingly-unstoppable juggernaut killers going after a woman. Kyle Reese is Dr. Loomis and Sarah Conner is Laurie Strode.
