Libby Day (Charlize Theron) was only seven years old when her mother and two sisters were brutally murdered in their rural Kansas farmhouse. In court, the traumatized child pointed the finger at her brother, Ben (Tye Sheridan), and her testimony put the troubled 16-year-old in prison for life. Twenty-five years later, a broke and desperate Libby has run through donations from a sympathetic public and royalties from her sensational autobiography, without ever moving past the events of that night.

When Libby accepts a fee to appear at a gathering of true-crime aficionados led by Lyle Wirth (Nicholas Hoult), she is shocked to learn most of them believe Ben is innocent and the real killer is still at large. In need of money, she reluctantly agrees to help them reexamine the crime by revisiting the worst moments of her life. But as Libby and Lyle dig deeper into the circumstances surrounding the murders, her recollections start to unravel and she is forced to question exactly what she saw – or didn’t see. As long-buried memories resurface, Libby begins to confront the wrenching truths that led up to that horrific night. Also starring Christina Hendricks, Corey Stoll and Chloë Grace Moretz, Dark Places is an ingeniously twisted thriller based on the best-selling novel by Gillian Flynn (Gone Girl).

DirecTV has begun a VOD run for the Charlize Theron thriller Dark Places ahead of its August 6 theatrical bow. As part of a deal with A24 that Deadline broke in November, the satcaster is offering the film exclusively for the next seven weeks. Gilles Paquet-Brenner adapted and directed the pic, which is based on Gone Girl author Gillian Flynn’s book. It centers on Libby Day (Theron), the sole survivor of a violent home invasion. She has lived with the knowledge that her testimony as a 7-year-old sentenced her brother (Corey Stoll) to life in prison for the horrific crime. Twenty-five years later, she is persuaded to re-examine the events. Nicholas Hoult, Chlöe Grace Moretz, Christina Hendricks and Tye Sheridan co-star.

I read the book a few months ago. Pretty good. Looking forward to this.

Does a VOD release first mean that it's not eligible for any Oscars? This movie looks promising. Awesome cast.

I put the book on hold from the library. This one could go either since Flynn didn't write the screenplay like she did for Gone Girl but we'll see.

71% with 7 reviews, I don't have DirecTV or I'd give it a spin.

That's a pretty high-profile cast for a movie that's going straight to TV or video, more or less.

I did read Gone Girl. Whatever else it might have been, it was a hell of good argument for staying single.

This wound up at 33% on rottentonatoes. It's Theron's worst performance but isn't a terrible late night cable movie. The movie could have been streamlined a good bit as even with the character development nobody is all that interesting and there isn't a ton of tension. Still, it's interesting enough to keep you interested if not particularly enthralled.

it also sort of shows how much David Fincher brought to Gone Girl.

3 out of 5

Watched this tonight and it was just okay. Fincher is a master filmmaker and no one will come close to his talents. Theron was not her usual likable self here and it's expected. The direction was average but I was sort of disappointed
Spoiler:
that Hoult's group of amateur investigators was not used more. They were in one scene then that was it and even he only popped up here and there
- considering that the promotional materials made it seem like they were a major part of the flick.

Glad I stayed in and watched it. I would have been pissed if I had seen it at the show and it's playing out here at the Hollywood ArcLight. Yeah, I know it sounds like I hated it but it was average. The "twist" at the end was a bit surprising, though.
