Wow, I wasn't expecting such a big opening for this. Did anyone predict that Jurassic World would be one of the biggest movies at the Summer box office?

So far the big flop of the summer season has been Tomorrowland, there was inevitably going to be at least one. We still have Terminator coming up.
Universal seems unstoppable this summer, which is a massive turnaround for them. Bet Minions does great business as well. They started the year with big flop #1 - Blackhat, which grossed $7m domestic on a $70m budget, then The Boy Next Door which did alright, and Seventh Son which made $17m domestic on a $95m budget (tho $110m total worldwide).
Everything after that has been tits, starting with Fifty Shades of Grey, then Furious 7, Pitch Perfect 2 and Jurassic World. With low budget Unfriended ($1m budget) pulling int $32m as a bonus.

Annnd just because it looks ridiculous:

NOTE: If daily grosses stop for a movie, it means that the respective studio is no longer tracking it on a daily basis. The exceptions are New Line, Miramax/Dimension and Sony Pictures Classics. They don't do official daily box office, and estimates are made for their movies based on partial data in order to fill out the top 12. Because of this, movies from these studios are more apt to disappear from the daily chart.

There were plenty of kids at my theatre, and what was funny was that after the show as the little shits were all excited about it I overheard one ask the dad if they could go see it again, and he was all like *sigh* "no, once is enough." I could tell he didn't like it. I'm going to assume that most adults with kids are getting dragged to this.
I heard numerous ADULTS on the way out saying they wanted to see it again.

Comparisons with the previous installments (all adjusted for ticket inflation):
Jurassic Park (1993) - $92.2M OW, ~$700M DOM
The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997) - $127M OW, $405M DOM
Jurassic Park III (2001) - $72.8M OW, $260M DOM
So, Jurassic World made more on its first day than JP3 did in its OW.

Estimates from Boxoffice.com:
Chris Pratt's already rising stock is now skyrocketing. Decent legs should get this to $500 mil US. I don't think anyone would have ever thought this would top Avengers 2.

...there's an extremely strong chance that it'll be the biggest. Initial estimates had it at $135m, it now looks like it could hit $190 - $200m.

Like I mentioned, it was sold out. I didn't want to wait over 2 hours for the next showing (which was already close to selling out last night). I can always go again tomorrow and reserve my seat tonight.

I thought it might do well but not this well. At the end of my showing there was a good amount of applause. That's a sign of people coming back.

Universal also controls Focus/Gramercy, so they're making bank off Insidious: Chapter 3 which only cost $5M to produce alongside the rest of the Blumhouse productions they have coming out this year.

THIS could break the Avengers record? Never saw that coming... the trailers made it look as terrible as the last two. I'll see it eventually, but the reviews don't have me wanting to rush out this weekend.
I doubt even The Force Awakens will open north of $200M with it's December release date (though I'm sure it will have better legs). I do predict the actual numbers for Jurassic World will be lower come Monday. Regardless, Pratt is on his way to becoming the highest paid actor in Hollywood. Just think, a year ago people were speculating he would end up in the same boat as Taylor Kitsch.

I did not expect this type of numbers specially since JP3 was awful. I have to agree that people loves their dinosaurs or it could be Chris Pratt, either way, congrats! The numbers are huge!

You've also got to consider that this is a major franchise, and regardless of how well-received (or not) JP2 and JP3 were there's still a lot of goodwill there. People who grew up on JP now have kids of their own. Sometimes when there's a lengthy gap between series sequels, the result is poor box office. Other times, like this, the perceived failure of past sequels is sort of forgotten and viewers are re-energized about going back to the universe they loved.

Have to give props for a really wide and apparently effective marketing campaign. To me it doesn't seem particularly fresh (none of these have since the first one) but obviously they managed to really hit the bullseye in getting people interested in seeing the fourth movie of a series, and Pratt's starpower post GOTG probably didn't hurt.

Kind of thought it was obvious that the way this had been tracking indicated that Chris Pratt's presence was seriously bumping this up from a casual summer tent pole to must see for a lot of people. Stick just about anyone else in there right now (including former it guys like Johnny Depp and RDjr) and I don't think you would see near this amount of enthusiasm for it.
I realize this will be hard for the Pratt haters out there, but the spin coming out of this week-end is going to be focused on him and how his presence, and not a bunch of new dinosaurs in a re-hash of the first story's plot, was the x-factor that led this to become the #1 opener of the summer.
Personally, I'm happy for him. He exudes an easy going likability that doesn't seem smug or off putting as some other big stars. Not that that can't change if he starts getting a swelled head and acting like a diva. But if can keep that in check, he won't have to extend his range much to have a huge, long, and profitable career. Hell, James Garner never really stopped playing variations of Maverick and he went out one of the most beloved TV stars of all time.

Yeah Pratt is one of the few stars that's actually attracting audiences to movies.
Haters gonna hate, but gosh darn it, people like him.

I can't imagine people are seeing this because of Pratt. I do agree he's the X-factor though. It's kind of a weird dichotomy. I'm not quite sure how to describe it. He's more of a safety net for viewers, I think. Going for the dinos but Pratt is the likeable bonus.

Re: Weekend Box Office 6/12/15 - 6/14/15 - It's a Jurassic World
It's sort of how movie stardom works though. If you put somebody people like in the lead of an appealing movie, it has a tendency to draw a bigger crowd than either of those two things separately. It's sort of like giving cred to a movie.
Like, Pratt can't open a totally unappealing movie, if you put him into Anti-Christ, it may have a slight bump but it isn't going to be huge no matter what. By that same accord, Jurassic World would have opened alright with almost anybody in the lead, but given the credit of a well liked star it will open far better. Big movie = big success, big actor = some success, big movie + big actor = huge success.
A $100m+ opening has several factors working for it, a nearly $200m factor has nearly every factor working for it.
