Good luck getting precise worldwide figures on that for all movies from the 20's onward. (And if the idea is to average box office gross by average ticket price, that still wouldn't give an accurate figure).

There is no even comparison to be had. Regardless of ticket sales or gross, due to how different things are now than they were then.

Jurassic world was #1 this weekend, inching out Inside Out, roughly $54m (-49%) to $52m (-42.4%), and it just passed $500m domestic on it's 17th day and is now well over a billion worldwide. Inside Out is at $184m

Do theaters even report back to studios the # tickets sold? It isn't as easy as dividing up the total $$ by a ticket price since there is so much variation on ticket prices, matinee, adult, children, 3D, special days, etc.

I still cannot believe Jurassic World is at $500 million in its third weekend. I didn't think it would get close to that in its entire run either.

Cannot imagine how many more Jurassic sequels we're going to get now that this one was such a huge money maker.

Estimates from Boxoffice.com. Jurassic World has a new worldwide total of $1.23 billion. It doesn't open in Japan until August 5.

Inside Out will beat My Big Fat Greek Wedding for being the highest grossing film that never hit #1.

Next weekend's drops are going to be interesting, especially since its been a while with the 4th of July being on a Saturday. It also doesn't help that tracking has been extremely soft on Magic Mike XXL and Jai Courtney's Terminator as well.

People in 1985 didn't have 500 channels on their TVs, the internet, streaming media, Blu-rays/DVDs, or all the other modern ways of watching entertainment that we take for granted today either. The fact that some movies can still break through all this noise and make a ton of money is commendable.

All it takes is one poorly made film to mess things up again. That said, I know Chris Pratt is signed on for two more.

What is Terminator Genisys expected to get? $75 million for the five-day weekend?

Well, he is a filmmaker. Spielberg is a billionaire too, doesn't mean he's going to start counting his money and stop making movies. These guys are doing what they grew up wanting to do, unlike most people (including other directors).

IIRC, 3-day estimates are around $35-40mm, so for the four day weekend a take of ~$50mm is likely.

On 4000+ screens at about $15 a pop... no it's not.

With Jurassic World's massive success, Fox will be in a rush to greenlight an X-Men film in the Savage Land.

How much do you want to bet that the Fox execs in charge of the franchise have never heard of the Savage Land?

That's a commendable part of the challenge, convince families (lets say 4) to go out, spend $60 on movie tickets and another $20 on refreshments to kill a couple hours when they could realistically just wait 3 months and watch it on their own big screen.

Instead of $18 back a few decades ago, though refreshments have gone up at a much slower rate than movie tickets (cuz they've been high for quite a while.)

Depends who owns the film rights to the Savage Land. Can locations have film rights? While the X-Men probably don't have rights to go to Stark Tower, can they use Wakanda as long as they don't show Black Panther?

That is what I always think when people talk money and not tickets sold. I am curious how many people are seeing the films vs just money made as ticket prices are twice as much as they were ten years ago.

It's still a good amount of money.

Must be the times of the day I go because I pay less now than ten years ago. Took my family of four to Inside Out this weekend for $20.00 total. The other theatre near me does $6.50 tickets all day on Wednesday. I find plenty of reasonable options.

When people reference cost inflation they usually are referring to weekend prices, where it shoots up astronomically. If you go mid week it's usually more or less reasonable.

A typical Friday night, non-IMAX, non-3D movie is $11 here, it was $9 a decade ago. 3D + IMAX brings it up to $16.50 or so.

I hear ya. It was a Saturday matinee but I was still surprised at how reasonable $5.00 per ticket seemed. Especially considering ever showing was selling out.

Oh your theater still does Matinee pricing? That's awesome, I miss those days. I remember reading the paper when I was a little kid and figuring out the times with ( ) around them cost more (or was it less? Eh either way)

We can get tickets for $5.50 every day between 4-530PM and the bucket refill for $3.75. Cheap and easy.

In NYC it costs anywhere from $14 to $17 for a single ticket depending on...whatever, I dunno. If there are cheaper options they're never offered when I go to a theater.

Re: Weekend Box Office 6/12/15 - 6/14/15 - It's a Jurassic World

At the theater I most often frequent, tickets are $5 before noon and $6 before 6PM every day. Evening shows are $10.

When I take the whole family, I usually go on a Sunday at like 10AM. Cheapest tickets, and theater is almost never full.

I also recently signed up for MoviePass at $28 a month. When I took my kids to Inside Out, I drove up there a few times the week leading up to the show, and I checked in for an evening show, but instead bought two $5 tickets to Inside Out on Sunday morning. Now my movie going for the rest of the month is basically free.
